:p aper:
Please folks, let's not re-start the US gun laws debate on this motor sport forum.

I thought that was the whole point of Chit-Chat. I know it's likely to end up in a circular and pointless argument, but surely unless it degenerates into personal insults the thread should remain open?

I took the decision not to allow 'shootings' type threads as they always go the same way with the same people arguing the same points which then degenerate into insults. Then Glaustien shows up and posts an essay, gets banned and sends me a poorly worded email with vague threads about advertising income.

Plus I haven't the time nor the patience and neither do the moderators.

Its quite clear with so many different cultures participating on here, gun ownership generates some of the most passionate responses. We are lucky we don't need guns over this side of the pond and its not something we need to discuss anytime soon.

Glad to see the thread closed. :)

I don't think it is "gun ownership" that generates the expression of disgust and contempt, it is the inhuman lack of empathy for victims shown by a tiny subset of writers blabbering about "their rights" in threads again and again about innocent people being murdered senselessly--and rapidly--..

Yeah best to lock it down, nothing could be gained by examining again and again how just a narrow subset is so self centered they can never think of anybody else's pain and suffering..And how common that train of thought is in one country.

Don't make me close this one too :)

More to the point, what the heck kind of formatting was I using when I quoted the original post? Stupid Windows.... :p

I closed the thread btw, not D-Type :)

But it wasn't you who made the comment about which I'm concerned. Hope it doesn't set a precedent.

Mark

D-Type knows our policy on not having gun threads, which is what the comment was about. I'm not sure what else it could have been about?

Perhaps the whole thing needs sorting out once and for all. I propose a duel.

If they had said 'a right to short sleeves' instead of 'bare arms' when writing their constitution, the spelling mistake wouldn't have happened. Silly things. x

Should have bought a Mac Dave :p

Ahh... maybe the 2nd most likely to become caustic thread subject!

I agree, the thread always degenerate into a bunch of people misquoting, insulting, and disregarding the opinions of others. Some need to just stop with the obvious jabs and for once agree that we all agree that regardless of the how or why the deaths of innocents at the hands of any violent act is a tragic thing.

Not at all. It was just because it was a reply to a spam which got deleted. So two replies to the spam, including yours, had to go too.

What??? Why would there be any point in this?????

Back to the thread ;) I think the forum has changed in recent years. There are far less contentious issues and whenever some of the forum elite get challenged to account for themselves, they tend to resort to intelligent insults and punctuation policing rather than debate (or as I like to call it 'arguement')

Yep, the forum is a lot more sanitized these days. It is also a lot quieter. Hmmmmm??

Well, there you have it. And most of the rest of us like to call it 'argument'.

Yes, why was that thread closed?

Mark
13th November 2012, 09:16
Because it was about marking Remembrance Sunday only. It wasn't a 'discussion' thread as such.

Mark
13th November 2012, 09:48
Should it have been open in the first place then? It could have been closed after the OP then it wouldn't have tempted any comments and those unsure of what 'Remembrance Day' was would not have been able to ask.

I wanted others to be able to leave comments too

I assumed it had been closed just in case it attracted negative comments.

That was a big reason too.

I have the utmost respect for Remembrance Day and the sacrifice made by people to ensure my liberties Mark but isn't that the point?

The people that abuse these types of threads sicken me but will always do it. Surely free speech is about understanding this and no matter how distasteful by affording them that option?

Surely that is one of the core beliefs behind the sacrifice made by the people we remember on 11/11. If people want to know more or comment, for whatever reason, then why not? If they break forum rules then deal with them but an open forum should be open to discussion, whatever the subject, within the rules we signed up to. It should not be governed by the beliefs and sensibilities of the Mods no matter how well meaning, within the forum code.

I won't bother posting such a thread in future then.

I tend to agree (even though one person's definition of what constitutes a suitable comment in such a discussion will often differ from another's). Either don't have a thread or allow discussion.
