So sad to hear that.
Unfortunately in motorsports the danger is always on a standby.
I hope the second injured spectator will get well soon.

I can't confirm this but one of my friend told me that he heard on Eurosport that fans were in dangerous place, but like i said i don't know if this is true

Guys, surely it's a forum unwritten rule not to post images and video of incidents where there's been a fatality or serious injury? Poor taste in my opinion.

+1 There's no need to see such thing, also as a sign of respect to the people involved you should not upload or post a video or photos from this...

Sooner or later you´ll find pictures in media anyway. There´s no reason why we have to speculate if there´s one person who can show how it happened. Don´t think it´s anything wrong with that.

I think that the video shows that you can never be sure that you are safe when spectating a rally. Anything can happen...

I agree with dimviii and rallyper, often such incidents will make the news on television. I dont think other forum users should try and moderate what we do or dont see. It is a very sad event which has again come upon us. Hopefully people will try and take something from such incidents and we can improve the over all safety of events.

One spectator died on SS13 in Kopacek crash.
R.I.P.

It was not Kopecký’s car that hit the spectators. It was car no 32, a Subaru Impreza.

Sorry for the confusion. I was last Friday on eye examination so I’ll soon get new glasses :D .

Nobody is trying to "moderate", it was just my opinion. And I don't think anybody really takes anything from such incidents. This has been possibly the worst year in rallying regarding crew and spectator deaths. I personally object to pictures and images out of respect to the victims, the crew involved and their respective families and friends, it's simply not necessary and saying that such things are shown on TV shouldn't mean that this forum should do likewise. Everybody has the freedom to go and search for what they want but this forum and it's members, of all people, should show more respect. IMHO.

Noel, I don't see anything wrong on a video like this where nothing graphic is shown. At least few people can realize that in case of such hi-speed crash the car can end even more than hundred meters away in few seconds. I heard the guy was sitting so he didn't run. Another thing one should never do if he isn't in really safe place.

It's a place where I originally wanted to go as well (to position of camera). I can even hear one my friend in the video...

I know Mirek, I take your point but it's knowing that when the car goes left off the road and then back across to the right that somebody's life is taken and another person is injured. But no worries, let's leave it at that.

As I alluded to it's been a sad year in our sport with the numbers increasing with today's accident and the fatal crash in Australia yesterday where Adam Plate lost his life.

I have seen too many times photographers in completely stupid places.. somehow their luck has been great.. thankfully. Good thing that I noticed first time in Rally Estonia (this summer) that 000 zero car stopped in the places where media people were in prohibited area and asked them to leave. Usually noone says nothing to photographers.

You can always make superb pictures without standing in the middle of the road;-)

According to his press release Pech retired due to the failure of a new electric water pump which is used in 01B version to save power. As far as I remember Peugeot faced big problems with this solution with the 207 S2000 in the past as well.

Well once they retired they used no more fuel. And at the price of fuel retiring because of electric water pump did save lots of power. Fuel is power, and money is power. Retiring saved both.
Thus electric water pump = win win

Brilliant analysis, eh?

Do you understand the points standings after Barum Rally? How is it possible Kresta, Kostka, Kruuda, Barrable and the others doesn't get points? Is it because the rally was shortened? I don't think so.

So the story (http://www.motorsportforums.com/wrc/151071-rally-deutschland-2012-a-50.html#post1062531) continues. After Rally Germany we headed for IRC Rally Barum, having the beginning of the week devoted for driving towards Zlin piece by piece and full-blown tourism. We reached Zlín on Thursday afternoon like previous times, bought the rally passes and guides (had to bought the Leo Pavlik/Quattro book too, even if I can only read the pictures) and got ready for scrutineering, seeing the cars and perhaps a few words with drivers. It was 32 degrees at the moment. We did have a word with Juho & Mikko and Jarkko & Jarkko also. Also met Mirek and some other Czech friends, also talked with some middle aged Swedish fans that I remembered from last year. It appeared that one of them had been to Barum already in 1985. It was a different world back then.

Friday: Shakedown of course. We choosed the last of the three hairpins in the forest towards the finish. Nice place where they cut a bit in the corner and the exit was a combination of flowing turns. Like I've posted before Triner was all over the place at first, clearly making friends with his Fabia. Also Bujacek was spectacular and as it prooved later in the weekend, he was drifting pretty much everywhere we saw him. Only one run from Juho. After almost 3 hours we drove to service park which was quite quiet at the time even if there were a lot of cars parked. Top Skoda's were being polished for the ceremonies, though something major was under work at the rear of Mikkelsen's car. Talked with Nikara a bit. Shakedown was good for him as he didn't have any pre-event tests. He started to work from Corsica setup.

Then of course the city stage. I've preached the gospel of bus station to anyone even slightly interested, so of course we opted for that. Last year we arrived before 3 o'clock and got last places in the front row. Now we arrived some hour later and waited at the place where the busses were still going through, but it was marked as spectating area to the guide. It turned out it was reserved as a private area to a well-known Czech group of fans - and we where left with nothing after 1,5 hours of waiting already. Very dissappointed - of course language barrier exists but still, a private area should be marked to the guide. It was raining and we were a bit under the weather so we decided to left the bus station and found ourselves nearby at a combination of left turn on cobblestones and right turn on tarmac. Headlights were mostly blinding us in the night, but it was still a nice place. Star Rally cars were roaring, one spun. Also Kopacek spun. Kopecky was sliding (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCBWg5Ycqx0&feature=player_detailpage#t=32s) on the tarmac turn on each lap. And it rained.

Saturday: We started with Slusovice without a bigger plan. Now it only half of the temperature which we had on Thursday. We entered the stage towards the finish and watched the first run on uphill section of bends (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MoTvaonazK0&feature=player_detailpage#t=380s). It was okeyish place this way, but I can imagine how much faster and more difficult it'd be the other way. Juho was clearly the fastest through which of course raised the spirits. Kangur had a moment (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MoTvaonazK0&feature=player_detailpage#t=31s) in the right hand bend, oversteering in the braking, but he managed to save it. One of the bigger number cars didn't save it and needed a gentle push from the spectators. For Slusovice 2 we walked to the hairpin left (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jt_GOAfxfHs&feature=player_detailpage#t=6s) at the access to the stage. Plan was to watch only top 10 and then run. We found a place inside and after the hairpin, rather nice, I'd say. Never been inside a hairpin before, I think. No big drama.

Then we made the drive to Tesak 1. It was rainy and foggy, and perfectly chaotic car park at the end. That is something I'd hope improvements for this event: If you don't know more about the stages than what's just in the guide, it gets difficult. There's no signs, no proper trafic marshalls, etc. Of course we were better prepared, but still. Even if we arrived slightly tightly, we decided to walk towards the finish to at least find one of the bridges there. And we did found one. My friend could have pictures of slight jump over the bridge; I stood 50 metres earlier to see the approach over a left bend with cut (also small splash for first cars) and flowing bends before the bridge. Three other spectators there. No big drama. Bujacek was just a little wide. As we walked back to the car after Nikara passed us we heard some official car going the stage and then the message came that it was game over for Nikara. Gutted. His 3rd fastest time in Pindula is truly an acchievement, no matter how was the weather etc. Apparently he hit some foundations of a burnt down pub in the field. Also, it could've been much worse.

For Lukov 2 we opted for the flying finish. Last year as the place run in opposite direction, I loved it to bits, and thought it must nice this way also. Now it was a right junction with a bump into the finish. You could also see the previous corner and approach to it. Had to leave the car very far, so after the walk we arrived to the place only like 10-15 minutes before 1st car. The place wasn't as nice as it was the opposite direction. Kopecky was shortly on two wheels and later on Koci went on two wheels in some 35-40 degrees. On the previous turn Bujacek made some photographers take a few steps back (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9F0iUCbcsM&feature=player_embedded#t=36s). Last cars ran in the dusk already and they still had the second run of Tesak left. That stage was foggy and in darkness it must've been very difficult and frustrating. Saturday was a long day as we came back to Zlin after 21 o'clock.

Sunday: Last day of rallying for our two week trip. We found a place in Halenkovice with a fast drive to Majak 1. It was between houses, kind of fast left turn, right turn and then the exit. We planned to leave right after Juho who was running 10th. After Pech passed us, we could hear Mini's engine's having a dry throat in the distance. It started to rain after Kopecky. Also, no Mikkelsen. Then as Juho was suppose to come, we saw Mikkelsen, but Juho was just behind him and Andreas politely made way. There was also someone's dog loose on the stage at the corner. Had Mikkelsen come 15 seconds earlier someone would be missing his/her dog now. Then a fast run to Majak 1. Because of the tight change, we had a safe mode on and parked car where we did in the shakedown - and even went for the same corner. Approach was nice, but uphill the corner wasn't so spectacular of course. This was actually the first stage where you could clearly tell that Juho was on the attack mode. Even Bujacek almost clean through the corner, but he drifted a bit at the exit. We watched a handful of cars and then moved to Majak 2 finish TC. Decided that we've seen enough fast cars, we want to be there at the finish when Juho takes his first Barum victory. Around the time the stage was supposed to go live came the news of the outcome of the accident, everything stopped there and then. Flags off, rally was over. We did go to ceremonial finish which was sensitive enough towards the situation. What a sad way to end the rally.

This was our third time in Zlin and we enjoyed it again, of course taking away the accident. Weather was demanding, like Juho said, the most difficult he had faced in Zlin, but it still wasn't too wet. We expected a lot more from Kopecky, but somehow his attack was missing. Perhaps the biggest surpise was Nikara as long as it lasted. And this might sound weird, but Arai too was far more better than in previous years. Haven't checked his times yet, though.

So two weekends, two rallies. Now it's time to relax a bit before starting to plan something for next season...

This video contains shots of other crews from the place of the tragic accident, also several big moments on wet Tesák or a crazy fast place from Slušovice...

Very spectacular video. Watch 11:00 :D (that stupid man-made jump of Slušovice is actually very good to compare suspension...)

Watch 11:00 :D (that stupid man-made jump of Slušovice is actually very good to compare suspension...)Excuse my total ignorance on the subject, but how come the shock absorbers didn't pick it up?

I think that it's a combination of factors. Very simple torsion beam rear axle on a relatively heavy and unbalanced car, not enough rebound damper stiffness and of course the stupid shape of the jump.

er um let me find my suspension builder hat,, OK ..Like it? Looks to me like way way short travel. and that means you have to spring it stiff, and of course damping has to match springing BUT when its so short and you expect asphalty---you don't account for REAL unweight/full weight.. And unless you have some compression damping dialed in its going to bottom easily---then bounce. Of course compression damping is always the hard one to get just right...
Of course I could be way off, but maybe not.

Horrible looking thing, what was it?

(I have to go on Sunday night and chop on some strut tubes for rally VW! Dinner is ready but I have to run :bigcry :)

Mirek
10th September 2012, 08:41
Yes, I agree with the too short suspension travel but I think it's mostly because of the simple torsion beam axle together with stock damper mounting points in gr.N car (they can hardly make damper travel longer).

In this rally I actually saw the worst ever suspension on a Rally car - it was old Wartburg! :D The driver must have been really brave to drive this one :D I wonder how he didn't had sea sickness :D

+1 common problem at this type of suspensions.

Thank Dog we don't have FIA classes and the miserable N classes here. Still more than half the projects in suspesnion I am doing I'm saying to people "Cut and weld in some towers once and then you have nice rear suspesnion with some travel enough I can do something".

You didn't say what the bouncy car was.

That's Bujacek's drift corner from last year. Seems to work both ways :-)

Here's Kresta's hot moment on second run of Halenkovice. I think we were at the place on the first run. That's where Mikkelsen let Hänninen pass him.

F*ck, I have some problems with the videos on my computer. Tried to watch the videos you posted but it’s a pain. The sound is OK but the video is not. Going forward in steps.

I’ve had the problem for some while and I’m not alone. My son and his friend reporting same kind of problems and by testing the receiving speed (~ 10Mb/sec) should be enough and I’ve have the same problem with my laptop as with the desktop.

Any solutions?

Right now I'm on 3G which is way slower than Yours and moreover on ancient eight years old notebook and it works (Win XP, Opera 11). Something is wrong but I don't know what. Maybe some codec?

Sounds like problem with your flashplayer. Try reinstalling it.
