Compared to Janner and three offshore IRC so far its quite fantastic.
By what is better? There are only 4 non-Italian drivers (only one of them competitive for podium) in top class and even the Italians are far from being complete top. In 2WD there are only 2 quite fast non-Italians and none of them is a challenge for locals Campedelli or Schiessere. For me it is a rather big disappointment.

Andreucci and Basso not complete top?
It would be nice to have Rossetti too for sure but this will be an interesting rally. Pleased to see Basso will get some competition mileage in the Fiesta before Corsica. Does he have an ERC/Italian programme in addition to IRC or is this just a one-off?

As far as I know it's just a one-off. He wants to test Fiesta RRC on this rally.

For me SS3 looks normal. Starting in about an hour.
Last night's SS1 have abnormally big gaps, I think. Now the game is on for real. Basso so far good, yes. Hänninen picking up the speed. Interesting to follow.

I don't think Basso was ever out of action but last year he was driving a Proton...

As you know, Basso can be fast even with a Punto or Proton. But this raises the question for me whether the car is as good as S2000 really or whether it is the driver.. At least this shows that Sordo should be able to be competitive on Corsica!

I don't think that the RRC itself has any advantage over S2000. Maybe in very very slippery conditions due to traction.

Mirek i would avoid to make conclusions, very few 1,6t -rrc cars at good drivers till now,and we dont know how ''good'' is for example Pechs mini.

no mental rythm maybe, but I think if you drive cars that are not as perfect as others are, you learn a lot in things like driving smoother and work more on suspension setting etc. maybe that happened to basso during his proton time?
rrc fiesta must have andvantage on atmospheric s2000 in every accaleration from low speed (and there are a lot in italy). cause of the much more torque the turbo engine produces in low revs. s2000 may have 300 hp, but only in high revs.

I wanted to say it is unfamiliar for Basso. I dont think he drove something like that for the last 5 years at least.
I wanted to say it is unfamiliar for Basso. I dont think he drove something like that for the last 5 years at least.
Exactly, not only new car for Basso but a new type of car too. Maybe conditions are slightly favouring his tyres but as we have heard conditions have varied quite a bit and he has consistently been about the fastest and has quite a nice lead now.
Let's see how it goes tomorrow... Now the question is, is RRC actually an advantage for him or would he have been even faster in proper S2000?
Ucci
20th April 2012, 19:57
I must admit I'm deeply surprised over Basso's pace. I did not count him as a threat for the first place, not with Fiesta RRC. His considerable advantage over second ranked Andreucci (not to mention almost embarrassed gap for Hanninen) is also a fact that Andreucci made a mistake in the last stage (he accidentally cut off the switch for petrol pump) and Juho's false tyre decision....Of course we should not make any excuses, Basso is fully justified in the lead. But I'm still convinced that any RRC is slower compare to top S2000 spec Pug or Fabia.
Tomorrow is another long day and as far we know Andreucci he did not tell last word in this rally.....On the other hand Juho can yust wait for a miracle-one minut distance is too much when you have to deal with a top Italian driver on his home stages.

Juho made a spin and then hit the side wall, lost over a minute. My predictions were 50% correct when I stated that Hanninen is way to slow for Andreucci in Italy, but I definitely didn't count on Basso. Also bad news regarding technical troubles on Cempedelli's DS3....

Congratulations to Basso!
Looks like Mikko Pajunen retired two stages from the finish. Shame since he was at the time already second in his class...

Very good performance by Basso. I think with a good car he can be a threat to Mikkelsen on tarmac in IRC. Not wanting to take credit at all from Basso I think the 1.6T performs a little better on the twisty corner after corner road. It will be interesting to see what he goes with for the IRC rounds seeing some roads are much faster and the S2000 may perform slightly better there.
Maybe S2000 for tarmac, RRC for gravel?

I can confirm that. There was same loose gravel in a corner and that´s it :- / What a shame ´cause Mikko was in a tight fight for class victory.
If you want to win, you need to finish first...

Game over, Basso won. And what a deserved victory! Few facts at the end: obviously Fiesta RRC has an advantage compare to s2000 cars in twisted sections, especialy when the stage requires a lot of accelerations from almost standstill. Also confirmed from one S2000 driver, who was spectating stages. The torque is enormous!! All what is needed is a top driver.
I'm deeeply disappointed by Andreucci's pace and hearing him on the conference I can yust confirm that he and Anna are also very schocked over Basso's superiority.
Some positve sides: very constant drive by young Stefano Albertini, first time in S2000 car and already fighting with old fox like Gamba. Congrats to Cerny for first place among 2WD cars. And the last but not the least, nothing new about foregin drivers in Italy.....they can not compete against top Italian drivers. You can even bring mighty Loeb and he would also hang a white flag....

That applies only if they don't have experience and especially for Mille Miglia which is very special by every years weather conditions. Sanremo many times or Kopecký winning some events of C.I.R. last year proved that it's not impossible to beat them on their soil. It needs experience. And Frankly I would still bet on Loeb...

Well, for gravel races you do not need Loeb....Mikkelsen is enough....

Kopecky won one event in 2010 (Salento). And as somebody mentioned, Basso was driving totaly new car for the first time. Do not forget this.....
From MaxRally:
“The car was good, but I’m very experienced at the Mille Miglia – this was my fourth win there – while conditions were mixed throughout the rally and we always made the correct tyre choice,” said Basso. “I wouldn’t say that this event was a particularly representative comparison of the pace of the Regional cars compared to the S2000 cars. We’ll have to wait and see for that.”

Thanks for sharing this with us. So there is still a hope for S2000..?????

It was one of my most exciting visits in Italy! As always, a great rally and a beautiful country. Just like you, I was also surprised by Basso's fantastic performence. We all know what he is capable of, but we didn't know much about his new car. Well, he showed us all what kind of driver he is! Congratulations!
Also Alex Perico was very very fast. Unfortunately he went off the road just a few hundred meters from the place where I stood (take a look at my photos). Also Umberto Scandola was very good. I was sure that it was him, who crashed and stopped stage 6, but no, it was Perico. This time Umby reached the finish line :)
I was very disappointed by Dimitar Iliev. When you looked at his driving, you could clearly see that he wasn't driving 100%. Surprisingly, his stage times were much better than both Solowow's and Gyoshev's. They both looked faster visually, but stage times said something different. Well, stage times don't lie :)
Congratulations also to young Czech driver Jan Cerny who managed to be the fastest FWD driver on this rally. To achieve something like that on Italian soil is really something!
On the way back from the stages we also saw a Serie A football match between ChievoVerona and Udinese and another motorsport event, Rally Racing Dreams in San Marino. Now that's what I call an exciting weekend! :D

Its hard to speak after these staggering shots.... this is something that the "emerging markets" will never have. Doesnt matter how short on money the organizers are, events like Mille, Corsica, San Remo will always be the essence of the rally culture, even if present only in local events.

If You mean the road and nature than there are thousands of crazy beautiful roads in the world. For example one of the most stunning asphalt mountain roads is going through Kabul gorge in a God forsaken country named Afghanistan...
