View Full Version : Name That Car

Labonte Massa
9th December 2006, 23:20
Since it's the off-season and there isn't too much left to be confirmed other than paint schemes and RYR's second driver/sponsor, I'll steal something from the Champ Car thread and bring Name That Car to NASCAR (since it's the only series I can actually name cars from.)

The rules are:
An image of any racecar from NASCAR (any of the 3 major series) history is posted. The first person to name the DRIVER, YEAR, and TRACK gets to post a new image and it keeps going.

Here's a link to the first image:

I could be mean and make you spell it right (Suzuka), but I'll give it to you.

Sorry it took so long, my computer was down.

I don't have a good pick I can find so right now, if someone else wants to go, be my guest

Mihai

Excellent idea! I'm already doing the 'Name the car' thing in Champ Car and Formula 1 (and soon Touring Cars). Now I want to get to know more NASCAR stuff. Can't wait to see harv's picture. Make it a modern day pic so I could have a slight chance too! :)

Mihai

No pic?
OK, let me have a go:
Who, what, where, when?

harvick#1
10th December 2006, 02:09
see this is easy, except I haven't saved any pictures, all I have is picks from Harvick cars, F1, WRC, and ALMS/LMES/24 hours of Lemans

Damn, I don't know much about NASCAR history but I know the Superbird from a nice Plymouth material I read in the French magazine 'Auto Passion' a few years ago. A little bit of research and here's what I found:
Pete Hamilton, Plymouth Superbird, Dayona, 1970

That's it! Pete was definitely a surprise winner of the 1970 DAytona 500. He also won both races at Talladega that year. You're up.

One of my all-time favourite liveries: the Flintstones Taurus.
Guess this:

This is most likely wrong, but...

Wendell Scott, Ford, Darlington, 1965.

dodgeboy
12th December 2006, 21:10
labonte massa
wendell scott had to always use cars that were 1 year old or older
in 1965 wendell was using a 1963 ford ;)

Mihai

Wendell Scott, Ford, Darlington, 1965.

Right driver & car, wrong track & year.

Hayden Fan

What Labonte Massa said, but at Daytona in '64.

Mihai
12th December 2006, 22:23
According to the caption of the pic, nope. Sorry.

rimryder
12th December 2006, 22:23
no way that car in the picture raced in 64
in 64 wendall scott was racing in a 63 ford
that is not a 63 ford in that picture because it is a 65 or 66 ford

Sparky1329

You're right. That doesn't look like a '63 Ford to me.

Labonte Massa
12th December 2006, 23:34
Wendell Scott, Ford, Charlotte, 1967? (random guess)

Mihai
12th December 2006, 23:40
wrong track, wrong year...

Labonte Massa
12th December 2006, 23:42
Alright, I'll take one more guess...

Atlanta '68?

Mihai
12th December 2006, 23:51
wrong track, wrong year again.

But since you were the first to mention Wendell Scot and you are very close, I proclaim you winner: it's the 1966 North Wilkesboro 400 race.

Labonte Massa
12th December 2006, 23:53
Alright, that was a very good one.

Here's mine:

Mihai
13th December 2006, 00:14
Bobby Labonte, obviously
Pontiac

Mihai
13th December 2006, 00:33
1998

harvick#1
13th December 2006, 00:45
1998

psst, its 99, theres no nascar 50th anniversary decal on the car

Labonte Massa
13th December 2006, 01:55
Yes, it is 1999, and yes it is a Pontiac.

But I need track and driver.

(yes, that's not Bobby Labonte, and this should give it away)

harvick#1
13th December 2006, 03:20
the track looks like Rockingham

Labonte Massa
13th December 2006, 17:20
It's not Rockingham.

RaceFanStan
13th December 2006, 17:23
With all the marks on the wall I'm thinking it's "the Lady in Black" aka Darlington ...

Labonte Massa
13th December 2006, 17:25
Yes, it is Darlington. All that's needed is the driver.

Mihai
13th December 2006, 19:07
Wow, Matt Kenseth qualified the #18 Pontiac at the spring race in Darlington that year!

Bobby started the race, but Matt finished it after a driver switch. I think Bobby was injured in qualifying?

Labonte Massa
14th December 2006, 00:01
Yes, it is Matt Kenseth at Darlignton in 1999.

Bobby Labonte was injured in the Busch race (I think he dislocated his shoulder).

Mihai
14th December 2006, 01:07
A funny one:

Cole_Trickle
14th December 2006, 04:28
Joe Nemecheck, 33 car, 2000...no idea where

BobbyC
14th December 2006, 06:19
Actually, that is Joe Nemechek, in Atlanta 2001 at the introduction with Haas-Carter Motorsports to be the driver of the #26 Kmart Ford Taurus for 2002. An unfortunate incident with financial scandals of Charles Conaway (who headed Kmart at the time) led to the sponsor's withdrawal and Nemecheck was out of a ride a short time later. He later joined Hendrick Motorsports in May 2002.

Eddie Lampert bought Kmart debt in bankruptcy, led them out of bankruptcy, and then bought out NASCAR sponsor Sears.

Thanks for the info, stuff like that interests me :)

I was only going by the year the first Grinch movie was released, and worked out the number from there, this must have been when the 2nd grinch movie was relesed :p

Mihai
14th December 2006, 10:01
Yep, you two got it. The caption of this pic says '11/17/01 Atlanta. Joe Nemechek was annouced as the driver of the Carter/Haas Racing number 26 Kmart Ford Taurus for the 2002 Winston Cup Season. Nemechek was joined at the press conference by 'The Grinch' as the team is running a special 'The Grinch Who Stole Christmas' paint scheme at Atlanta.

Mihai

Hey BobbyC, how about a pic to keep this thing rolling ?

Labonte Massa
27th December 2006, 20:34
In the interest of keeping this going, I'll start the game over.

BobbyC can post a new pic when/if he returns.
