Now my interest levels in the 2012 BTCC begin to build! I can't imagine the works Hondas won't end up in the top 10 later. And I do hope the NGTC Audi and Toyotas are able to prove that their pace last year wasn't just down to the differences in technical regulations.

Certainly the evidence of FP2 suggests Rob Austin's Audi in particular is genuinely fast. Hondas looking good, and Plato impressively high up.

Well, who could have believed that? Dave Newsham on pole in the Vectra from Neal, and Plato in the top six. Great qualifying by the BMWs, all in the top 10 with Collard third, Onslow-Cole fifth and Foster a best-ever 10th. Rob Austin and Frank Wrathall seventh and eighth. Looks like Mat Jackson's poor qualifying form is continuing into 2012.

My thoughts on qualifying..
Great job by Newsham, very much less so by his team mate, I hope it wasnt on purpose...
Well done to Plato and MG on a brilliant result for such a new car. I dont think ive ever seen a touring car with so much air under its rear wheel as it corners, but at least they wont have to worry about tyre wear! The colour scheme is still rubbish and the front bumper looks like its got rally spot lights from a distance with the white logo on black!
Motorbase Ford still slow in qualifying, why cant they sort that out?
The new commentary pairing seemed to work well straight away IMO

Very interesting qualifying session. Dave Newsham's lap was excellent. The BMWs and Hondas both look very good. Jason Plato hauled that MG into 6th place, that car will be flying by the second half of the season. Shame Mat Jackson and Motorbase just can't get that Focus to qualify well.
BDunnell
31st March 2012, 23:19
In fact, while Plato's grid position is splendid given how little running the car has had, there is a sense in which we ought not to be too surprised. This is, after all, a Triple Eight car, and neither the team nor the driver can ever be counted out.

Shame Mat Jackson and Motorbase just can't get that Focus to qualify well.
How much of it is the car and how much the driver? Jackson isn't ahead of either of his team-mates by too much time-wise. Given that this is a car/driver/engine combination unchanged from last year, it is surprising to see Jackson behind all three BMWs, given that one of the elements is new to WSR.

The marshalls are idiots. We've had enough praise for them on various forums, but time and time again they show they don't have a clue. To work a BTCC/F3/GT meeting there should have to be a minimum standard. That's a good £5k damage they've probably done to Motorbase.

The latter. If the BTCC is serious about improving driving standards, one might expect something to be done. Also, I don't see what it achieves for a new team operating on a tight budget for the driver to constantly be spinning off of his own accord. Not a good advertisement. Shame, because the car looks good in purely visual terms.

I really enjoyed all 3 races today, and thought the driving standard was pretty good for most of it with only a couple dodgy incidents.
Gutted for Morgan who couldnt have had more bad luck if he tried. His initial pace seems good so things can surely only get better for him!
And the new commentaty pairing works well, though it does sound like Tim grabs Toby's nuts every so often making him squeel like a piggy!

I'm very unsure about Toby Moody, to be honest. There are bits of his delivery that just don't sound good. But maybe he'll grow on me.
A word of praise, incidentally, for Rob Austin. Last year we didn't really know whether his A4 was running at the front because of the certain advantages it enjoyed as an NGTC car compared with the S2000s, or because it genuinely was a quick car. Now we've seen it competing against NGTCs made by more established preparation teams, it's clear that both car and driver really are competitive. That's a huge achievement for a small team.

Hi,
My wife and I must have been listening to a different commentary to most of you on here. We both thought that the new commentator was rubbish. He didn't even know what lap they were on in the third race. Perhaps he should be renamed "Tubby Muuddled".
Is it my perception or is the ITV team biased towards Mr Plato, all of the teams, new and old, had to develop there cars from a "Blank Canvas" as it were. They've all done very well, the drivers, mechanics and the back room staff, some now have more work to do than others. We'll be at Donington to see how they all fair on a longer lap.

No chance. There's already arguments about the MG having a better boost level than the rest with their parity measures.
I can't see why they need to mess about with boost levels when they could just use weight penalties like the WTCC and their parity system.

Very interesting opening three races.
Jason Plato back to his old self, and despite what I think was perhaps a penalty-worthy incident in race 1, you can't fault his efforts in bringing that MG to the top step of the podium in Race 3. Andy Neate was nowhere for most of the weekend, so you must say that a lot of that performance must have been from Plato himself (although it could be argued that Neate's car was the less prepared of the two). But, as I said, his move at Paddock in Race 1 was almost a rookie error; the kind of thing you might have seen Nash and the like getting punished for a few years back.
The Hondas have proved very interesting; they do lack the straight line speed but I'm sure with a bit of turbo re-balancing we will see them win plenty more this season. Shedden couldn't have had worse luck this weekend; I'm really rooting for him this year as he is the one driver on the grid this year who really should have won a championship by now.
Fair play to team eBay and WSR for winning the opening race; in a race without safety cars those machines are really quite fantastic just about everywhere on the circuit, but warming up their tyres after restarts is still a problem that seems to plague them. Collard could be a dark horse this season. Although, we've seen Collard perform well at the start of seasons before and gradually drop back. Hopefully WSR can squeeze every last drop of performance out of the old chassis and new engine to keep themselves in the running.
A special mention has to go to John 'Businessman not racing driver' Thorne who managed to throw his car at every piece of grass at Brands Hatch. I don't know if it's the car or if he is really struggling, but either way a lot of work needs to be done there!
Oh, and Toby Moody: He seemed very much to be sticking to his notes while commentating. If I hear him say 'the 888 guys have done a great job to get that (squeaky voice) BRAND NEW car on the grid this weekend' we may have a falling out. I'm sure he'll improve over the season, but whoever made the Alan Partridge comparison has got it spot-on for the moment!

I found Collard's performance in race three in particular very odd. Same goes for Rob Austin, for that matter. In the past the rear-wheel-drive cars have always looked after their tyres much better to the end of the race — witness Collard and Foster rocketing through the field at Rockingham last year. For whatever reason, that wasn't in evidence at Brands at all. Maybe there's some more set-up work to do.

Johnny Adam 2009 anyone? I think that if anything, punting someone off and out of the race entirely is much worse than a tap on the rear that got saved and Plato still finished in second in that race in 2009 (pre-DSQ for Adam). Jason should definitely have got punished for that.
As for Thorne, I'm sure he just needs some time to get used to the car and get the car up to speed. As has been seen from Thorney Motorsport's Dunlop SportMaxx adventures in the past, they do know how to engineer a racing car.

Yeah, should be on the small oval at Foxhall Heath or Skegness, preferably with Mr Hotbreath inside it, then we'll see about a 'bit of a tap' and 'rubbin's racin'. Take that......biff.

Johnny Adam 2009 anyone? I think that if anything, punting someone off and out of the race entirely is much worse than a tap on the rear that got saved and Plato still finished in second in that race in 2009 (pre-DSQ for Adam). Jason should definitely have got punished for that.
Brilliant example, wish I'd thought of it! I'm a fan of Plato, but I do wish he received a bit more in the way of race-affecting punishments.

I can't really say much of interest about this first weekend of racing. A few things I would point out are that Plato absolutely had that corner, and Newsham is entitled to his opinions but doesn't see the far more reasonable side of the story, that Plato should not have received a penalty compared to Shedden's 2011 bumping and banging, and that John Thorne is a menace to the race.
The Honda Civic looked less strong than last year, actually. Also, I'm glad Chris James is finally being revealed for being an immature personality in the paddock, whereas Plato stands his rightful ground.
Hoping to see the same from Plato at Donington. I hope no crashes are involved, because it just raises hopelessly endless controversy.
