I was trying to get the 2012 app for my phone and to my surprise ( I really shouldn't be), it was neither free like 2011 nor was it the same cleanly styled app. I saw the screenshots, downloaded the lite version and then quickly deleted it. Full of pop ups and comical interface, and they want me to shed $30 for this?

Terrible move by F1. I severely doubt more than 20 people will shed that kind of money for a live timing app, let alone one that looks miles worse than what was offered last year.

Live timing is free and the track positioning is (or at least was) available on broadcasters' websites. Save your money.

I've loaded up the 'free' app, and the first thing it says is that it wants £20 off me.

It wasn't free last year either, in fact I'm sure they are still selling last years at a reduced price (why?)

I bought the 2012 app and used it for the first time for P1 and I found it useless :mad:

nope it was free for my android and it was decent enough, with live timing etc

Same for iPhone there was free and paid. Free was basic but ok.

What was available on the free one last year? I used the formula1.com site last year for live timings because I was under the impression that you needed the £20 app for that on the iPad.

At least this year it looks like the Sky app has live timings and driver tracker included.

If you've got Android try "F1 Live Stream", it was excellent (and free) last year and looks like it's been updated for '12.

Thanks for pointing that one out. Looks like a reverse engineered version of the Java app on the formula1.com web site. Screen size is hard coded unfortunately, so not ideal on a tablet.

The 2011 F1.com iPhone was free and enabled access to the live timing screens. The 2012 app costs NZD$36.99 for the same service, but has a ghastly interface and IMHO irrelevant information. What a backward step for supporters especially as the browser F1.com live timing doesn't function on an iPhone. I have reverted to Autosport Live AUTOSPORT Live - the authority on live Formula One, F1, motorsport, minute-by-minute text commentary (http://live.autosport.com/) and the ESPN iPhone app App Store - ESPNF1 (http://itunes.apple.com/nz/app/espnf1/id424024870?mt=8). F1.com - the ESPN CricInfo app is an outstanding example of how to successfully engage and interact with fans and supporters on mobile devices. You can do much much better.... or let others have access to your screens and see what evolves.
