YVA - Moroni - Comoros
YIH - Mystery Country 1
YOK - Yokohama - Japan
YKS - Yakutsk - Russia
YNB - Mystery Country 4
YKM - Yakima, WA, USA
YAK - Mystery airport, USA
YUM - Yuma - USA

Score a bonus point :D .
Still looking for mystery countries 1 & 4 though :)

I've flown into YIH quite a few times as I had the misfortune of working there several years ago :s

Storm
5th April 2012, 14:23
YIH is that Jeddah? I think you worked in the Middle East if I'm not wrong.

schmenke
5th April 2012, 15:10
YIH is not Jeddah, although YNB is Yanbu, Saudi Arabia.

YIH is proving to be somewhat of a red herring.

YAO - Yaounde - Cameroon

YKS - Yakutsk - Russia

Well, not all Q's are going to be easy... sometimes that's just the way the egg rolls.

Tazio
5th April 2012, 19:29
Well I've thrown in the towel. Yakima was easy even though I had no idea whether or not it has an international airport. To me I always thought it was a sleepy little town with a funny sounding name :p
so no bonus for me.
Perhaps you can toss a wee little morsel of a clue ;)

EuroTroll
5th April 2012, 19:33
red herring, egg rolls or spring rolls ? :cornfused:

I may as I prefer coffee myself, although many living in YIH would likely prefer chai...

Sorry for the late response — in the process of finishing a move from, ironically, Germany back to the UK.

Here you go. The following quote was spoken by US Secretary of State James Byrnes in 1946, but how does the sentence end?

"The United States does not feel that it can deny to France, which has been invaded three times by Germany in 70 years, its claim to..."

Alsace?

BDunnell

Non.

Tazio
6th April 2012, 18:57
I'll say Alsace-Lorraine, although I think it may refer to France's inclusion in the partitioning of Berlin, If my US history serves me correctly we were instrumental in tossing them a bone when others did not want to include them.

Edit: Alsace-Lorraine whoops! :o
That's a double whoops I meant all of Germay not only Berlin. :o :o

BDunnell
6th April 2012, 19:18
No, neither Alsace-Lorraine nor anything to do with Berlin.

Is it a U.S. military base? If that one doesn't work I will say judicial participation in the Nuremberg trials?

Yes, that's the one! Well done. As an aside, it would be fascinating to know how history might have turned out had the French had their way to bring the Ruhrgebiet under multi-national control.

Are you counting the Netherlands Antilles as a whole? Including Bonaire and the little one - forget the name.
 No - the answer's one island

Maybe Hispaniola? Cuba is closer to Mexico, so should be counted as North America.
 No - they classify these as being in North America (I think it depends which tectonic plate they're on)

D-Type
7th April 2012, 23:28
OK, I've exhausted my knowledge of South America. I'll probably kick myself when you tell us though.

Close enough, methinks. The answer is actually simply tides. At low tide, Rutland is the smallest county in England, whereas at high tide, county X is the smallest. Half and half. ;)

As I understand it, Middlesex is no longer a separate county, as it's part of the Greater London administrative area. The answer was the Isle of Wight, which is a separate county, and tides. At low tide, the Isle of Wight is larger than Rutland, and at high tide, it is smaller. I didn't know about the reservoir in Rutland, and I'm not sure how it fits into this...

No, although Cyprus and Greece are the same (tune and words), Macedonia is different.

Depends what you mean by "former colony". God Save the Queen is still the anthem in the last remnants of the empire and former colonies that were never given their independence are now called British Overseas territories.

If only melodies it may surprise some people that "My country Tis of Thee" which is sung to the same melody as "God Save The Queen" was the National Anthem of the US well into the 20th century, which is not a guess as it was replaced with “The Star Spangled Banner”.

That's the large one and the small one that maybe isn't a country - it's a British Overseas Territory nowadays, not a colony any more.

So now we are looking for a small independent European country that has a national anthem with the same tune as "God save the Queen"

Moldova is my speciality. They're famous only for their very beautiful women ( kinda girls who use to break a decent family ) and great wines.

If the issue is their flag they have an aquila ( or eagle ) secured by a shield with a head of "bour" ( a sort of wild bull ) placed between a sun and a half moon. The aquila has a cross in its pecker and a sceptre and an olive branch in its claws.

Don't know which element to pick....
