Wouldn't it be awesome if the qualifying rules at Daytona made sense again?

At least it wasn't a crash fest like the shootout.

I watched the first race live, and must admit I was a little worried when I saw how hard she hit. The safety barriers and other advances really do make a difference. If that had happened even as recently as 10 years ago she'd be in for some sheet time for a while.

Definitely. The approach to the wall was all grass there back then and the wall was concrete. I shudder to think what would have happened if she hit that concrete wall roof first after getting snagged by the grass that had been there.......

The skidpad has been there since the mid-90's, it was expanded when the track was repaved a few years back.

And in the early 90's, she might not have hit the concrete wall at all. She would have gone over the earth embankment and into Lake Lloyd.

I remember when I first started watching racing as a kid, a car in the IROC race did exactly that. I think it was Al Unser. He didn't make it into the lake although he was right at the edge.

Memory is a funny thing,Andrew mentioning the embankment made me think of a wreck I hadn't thought of in years. SO I went looking on youtube and found it. Isn't modern technology wonderful!

Unser's crash was impressive, but he didn't get wet.
