boy - I don't really deserve to get this one!!

well, the only other 1 mile track on the schedule that year was Milwaukee (I was thinking Trenton was more like Pocono - but it was a mile and a half....)

I guess one of these days I am going to have to wander up to Trenton to vist the NJ State sculpture garden and see if there is any sign that it was once a race track.....

You are Correct it was Trenton. :bounce:

I forgot to put the .5 on the last reply. From Google Earth nothing left of Trenton except a lake shaped like the track. I can just see todays drivers complaining if they drove Trenton or Pocono. It's just to hard to setup the car or I could not get it to stick in the corners. BLA BLA Bla-Cry Cry Cry that's pretty much the same for both series. Anyway.

yeah, you have a point about today's drivers - I think our sport has become a little too technology/let the car do the work for you centered sometimes - although I suppose at today's speeds that is probably necessary....

I still can't believe Marco Andretti parked a bad handling car once or twice this year - I'll bet Mario the race car driver (not the grandfather) was not happy about that!!

Anyway - here we go....

You got it already. I didn't think it would be too hard, but I really liked the picture. It's Steve Chassey's rookie test. Also, the one you posted before was nice and difficult. I wasn't thinking 1965 would be a year with just front-engined cars in the photo. Nice site btw. You're up!

That was a nice photo - is that from your own collection (noticed the faint signatures - I have a Mike Mosley in my collection but not Dan Gurney...)

I thought the picture I posted was kind of neat but a little disturbing at the same time - seeing Kenyon slumped over the wheel and all of the fuel pouring out and what not - but since his fans posted it I figured it was not in too bad of taste...

neat picture - even if it is a model...

I have seen that car before - but I had to do a little digging to figure it out:

1962 Watson-Offy
Indy
Jim rathman
car was entered by Smokey Yunick

First winged car at Indy. Wing was asked to be removed by officals - which was ok wiht Smokey becasue while the car was faster in the turns, it was slower on the straights so the net results was pretty much a wash....

champcarray
31st July 2007, 20:43
You are correct, Chris. Your turn.

I read that the car went 146 mph in the corners, but couldn't go much faster on the straights because of the drag! It still amazes me that a winged car debuted in 1962 -- it took several more years for the concept to catch on!

Chris R

Chris R
7th August 2007, 20:47
Here's what I found at "oldracingcars.com"
"Gerhardt (Rick Muther): The Jack Adams Aircraft #54 entry was the last of the turbine cars, utilising an Allison Model 250 turboshaft turbine engine and initially a chassis built by Glenn Bryant of MSU. The Bryant chassis was abandoned after Indy 1969 and the team returned in 1970 with the Allison installed in a more standard Gerhardt chassis (Ludvigsen's 70s book, p16). Jigger Sirois got the drive but was unable to qualify. The car then made a few USAC appearances with Rick Muther in 1970, managing a very impressive eighth at Trenton in October. In 1971, with Muther again in the seat, it raced at Rafaela and Milwaukee but failed to qualify at Indianapolis. It was sometimes entered as an 'American Eagle', causing Phil Harms data to sometimes identify it as an AAR Eagle."

Yup, it's Rahal at Laguan Seca in '91. It was the last race of the year and he was battling Michael Andretti for the championship. Unfortunately for Bobby, his car overheated about 1/3 of the way into the race and that was it. Michael won the race and the championship.

I never could find much info on Jovy Marcelo. I know he raced against Vasser in Atlantics. For those who watched Atlantics back then, how good was Jovy? I've heard King Hiro was really good in Atlantics, but we all know how he did in Champ Car.

I talked to Andreas Leberle at Fontana (the guy behind Project CART/Project Indy/Project Racing Group/etc) and he said he still keeps in touch with Jovy's dad. Some of you may have also noticed that Leberle's cars usually had sponsorship from "Marcelo Group".

I totally agree. From time to time I do a google search for info on Jovy Marcello, but I don't usually come up with much. A few references to his accident at Indy (and really nothing deeper than name & date stuff), but that's about it. Having a hard time finding pictures too.

I didn't know much about him before he got to CART, but I like to root for the underdog, and when I found out there was a Filipino driver, I knew he'd be my favorite. Unfortunately, his career was waaaay too short. :(

I often times wonder how different the racing world would be with drivers from such diverse locales as the Philippines and Uruguay (Gonzalo Rodriguez)?

Jovy won the 1991 Atlantics championship over Jimmy Vasser. Jimmy had 6 wins to Jovy's 2 (13 total races), but had a much worse finishing record. They both moved up into CART in 1992.

Some more info on the photo from another forum:

I found out from a person more intelligent than me that the guy who Duane has his arm around in the light colored sweater is Billy Krause.

Excerpt from an interesting interview with Krause:

THE BILL KRAUSE INTERVIEW by Willem Oosthoek

Quote:

WO: After Daytona 1963 Chevrolet closed the door but you still had Mickey’s Indianapolis program.

BK: The Indy cars constructed by Mickey had those little controversial 12 inch wheels and we tested them at a Firestone test track in Texas, a 7-mile oval in the middle of the desert. But that track did not offer enough high friction so we couldn’t find out much about the adhesion and handling characteristics of those tires. Firestone was nervous about their use and made real hard rubber compounds for them. It showed! When they let go during practice at Indy there was no warning. When I spun the car I had no clue. It was just gone, lost traction. Usually you have a little warning. It was zero. I was straight and I was sideways. I spun in turn 1 and ended up in turn 2, never touching the brakes. And I would not have hit anything if Roger McCluskey’s roadster hadn’t run into me.

WO: Nobody could qualify those cars. Graham Hill couldn’t. Masten Gregory couldn’t.

BK: Well actually Duane Carter did. But there was too much confusion in the team. Mickey had 6 cars entered. Three days in a row, when I was doing 200 mph on the back straightaway, the hot oil would come out and the wind would blow it in my face and goggles. I lost confidence. I didn’t feel comfortable. I probably could have qualified the car but I couldn’t have driven it with 32 other guys because I couldn’t tell where it was going. So I decided to pack up and go home to California. At that point I decided I should stick with making a living and pursue my business interests. I had lost my motivation. Indy changed my attitude. I did race after that but it was never the same.

It looks very McLaren-ish to me, but I'm gonna guess Eldon Rasmussen, 1975, Rascar (whatever that is), FoytTC (Offy?)...track maybe Milwaukee or Trenton?

Got me on this one, although the first car looks again McLaren-ish, mid-70's I'd say, I don't know why we'd see the USAC Champ dirt/sprint type rigs on the same track...

I figure the days of seeing front engined rigs compete against RE cars, ala Indianapolis Raceway Park road course or Milwaukee, were pretty much over by the time McLarens came along.

Obviously, this image is a well-done Photoshop forgery! ;)

McLaren is correct. As Phoenixent would say, "Keep Digging!" :)

Chris R

That looks likethe Red Roof Inns McLaren that Vern Schuppan drove - How about Pocono in 1980 where they started some dirt track cars atthe USAC race to fill the field.....

Chris R
15th October 2007, 18:07
Actually, it is Pocono i 1981 with Schuppan in a McLarne Cosworth....

To think, they used dirt cars to fill the field but they still had 21 (by my count) "real" indycars in the field... Perhaps the IRL and OWRS can leanr from this can you imagine a WoO car at Long Beach??? :)

That's it! They were embarrassed to only have 21 cars so 8 Silver Crown cars filled out the field to make it a more respectable 29. It would prove to be AJ Foyt's last win as a driver. THis was back during the original "split", and Tom Sneva, Vern Schuppan, and Geoff Brabham "crossed the picket line" so to speak. It seems to have been a pretty good race, Foyt and Sneva swapped the lead 7 or 8 times before Sneva dropped out on lap 79, and then Geoff Brabham and Tom Bigelow joined in, and Foyt took the lead from Brabham 3 laps before rain shortened the race at 122 laps. Mark Alderson was the highest placed Silver Crown car 18 laps down. That's Smokey Snellbaker in the #54, and I can't identify the other driver.

pretty interesting stuff.... I wonder what the pace car is - almost looks like an Opel Manta or maybe an early Mazda RX-7....

I guess it just goes to show that history repeats itself - however what is more absurd - filling a field with dirt track cars or running 17???

AJ did go on to do some winning in sports cars - but it was a bit of an odd last Indycar win for a storied career...

ok - here's hte next one - I jsut have to hope I can rememberthe details!!! :D it has been sitting on my computer for a while....

....

Oh yeah, I forgot, he won the 24 hours of Daytona 2 years in a row. You know, for as huge a fan of Foyt as I was, I only ever saw him win 2 races on tv, those two races. I was too young/not paying attention before that. (not to mention not even born yet for a big chunk of his career.)

Chris R
15th October 2007, 21:38
Alex, you and me both - AJ was my racing hero when I was growing up - but he was already past his prime...

I am not sure I even saw him win a race on TV. I do rember being pretty pumped about his start at Indy in 1981 and the first couple of "real" laps of the 1982 race after he beat his car with a hammer and led the race on the shear power of anger.... I think the start of the 1982 race really showed me the extent of his talent/determination even if it was a short lived incident...

I saw him race at the Meadowlands in 1984 and Portland in 1990 - but it was actually kind of sad by that point....

It looks like Dan Gurney in the Lotus Ford #91, and Rodger Ward in the Watson RE Ford, but I cannot find any record of those two cars being on the same track at the same time.

Chris R

Nope, not Ward, or a Watson - a little later than that.... I do not think the otehr driver is Gurney either

I gotta say guys , I shouldn't have posted this one because I have totally lost my source for it!!

I think it is 1966 (the 1967 Brawner had little winglets on the nose) and the best I can figure it Phoenix in the Fall and that is Bobby Unser in a Gerhardt-Ford next to Mario...

If someone can re-verify for me that would be cool - sorry for the faux-pas!! :(

You are Correct.

This photo was of the Phoenix which word was made by Williams. Don't know for sure but some one will.

Chris R

I just checked the 1980 Indy 500 yearbook - this looks like the car they called a Wildcat PR-001. The Phoenix (or at least what they called a Phoenix at Patrick Racing) looked different - alot like the Longhorn that was supposedly pretty much a Williams FW07....

If I recall correctly, you (Phoenix) said that the 1981 Coyote was actually a re-worked 1980 Wildcat...

There was a lot of car building and badging going on in the early 1980's - can anybody shed any light on the stories behind these cars....

To add my own little story - Tom Sneva did an off-season PR appearance at a local K-Mart in 1981 or 1982 (I am thinking it was before he won the 500 - so winter of 81-82). He had a car there (the first Indycar I ever saw up close) - being the sharp-eyed young fan - I asked him if it was a Phoenix or March (it had a Phoenix nose but somewhere on the car was a March nameplate) - he said it was a Phoenix/March combo that George Bignotti had put together.... maybe it was just a show car... Anyway, he was a real nice guy and very accomodating to all of the young fans there....

I'll have a picture tomorrow....
