I've spotter there in the background the pink body work of the WIT car the Emmo drove that season.
Maybe you could post your other photos somewhere else, I like those old shots.

Chris R
5th February 2007, 18:45
yup, I see the body work - but Emmo didn't drive it in this race!!

I have a couple of others I'll use here in the near future and I'll try to scan some more in and post them to my photobucket account.... but like i said - they are pretty bad - it was rainy and I only had a 110 camera....

I agree about the old photos - anyone who has old self-done stuff don't be afraid to use it - even if they are not up to professional standards - they are still cool :)

also, Detroit was the only wet race that year unfortunately. The next wet one would be at Portland 1997. What was the last wet race before Detroit 1996? I'm not sure if there were any in 1995 and I'm almost 100% sure there weren't any in 1994 either so that would leave Portland 1993 I think...what do you think Phoenixent?

Al Unser in an Arizona motorsports Lola
practiced but retiired because car wasn't quick enough...

You are Correct Chris.

It was a sad day for me when Big Al retired. I use to go to Longo Toyota and look and the winning March he drove at Indy. It was great to see all the winning Penske cars here in California before they moved them. Al Unser was my childhood hero and is still a hero to me.

Chris R

He is definitely one of the most under-rated or maybe more ciorrectly under-appreciated of the AOWR stars of the era. I found it kind of sad that the only picture I could find of that car was the one you had posted which was from a hearing aid adverstisement.... You would think the last ride of a 4 time Indy winnner would at least have some web photos....

Chris R
27th February 2007, 18:31
So what is the story behind AJ in that Parnelli? Did he actually end up buying out Vel's Parnelli Racing??

Alexamateo
27th February 2007, 18:49
I had an old Car and Driver as a kid and this is what I remember. The article said that AJ had the aging Coyote out on the track running 197's, but Parnelli had brought the car out with AJ in mind (I guess he wanted to sell him some new cars) He convinced AJ to give it a go and AJ went out and qualified fastest on the second day. They broke something in the motor on the second lap, but were reportedly all smiles. He ran it on the ovals the rest of that year (He won at Silverstone in the Coyote.) He won the pole at Trenton, and was second at Phoenix and led every race with it.

He won 5 races in the Parnelli in '79 and finished second at Indy, albeit against less than full fields due to the first split.

The Parnelli was probably the fastest non-ground effects car. The last ones to qualify were at Indy in '81 and George Snider was fastest in AJ's Parnelli Backup (The others were Tony B and Vern Schuppan in Mclarens and Ton Klausler in a Schkee?) Tim Richmond actually drove the car in the race after buying it from Foyt. (PS This was the first race I ever went to :) )

Danny Ongais was also very fast in the Parnelli.

Chris R
27th February 2007, 18:55
cool - thanks for the background... Yeah, the Parnelli was a good car - pretty much a converted F-1 car like the M-24 McLaren and Penske PC-6... When you consider it debuted in 1976, it had a long shelf life....

cool - thanks for the background... Yeah, the Parnelli was a good car - pretty much a converted F-1 car like the M-24 McLaren and Penske PC-6... When you consider it debuted in 1976, it had a long shelf life....

The Parnelli VPJ6 debuted in 1975 at Indianapolis but the bugs still had to be ironed out. The story I heard on Foyt's VPJ6 deal was that Parnelli and Ongais parted ways with Interscope Racing buying the VPJ6B's and Parnelli keeping the latest VPJ6C's. Foyt was offered the car and the rest is history. Carl Hungness listed one car as a new built 1980 car but don't know if that's correct.

Great picture that presents some mystery!!!

That engine looks like an AMC V-8 stock block car looks like a Vollsedt.

Number is a Vollsedt/Simon/Guthrie number

1976 is the year the AMC was introduced and it looks like a 1976 car....

However Jerry Grant drove the AMC car that year (even though it wasn't this one)

So I am goingto say Jerry Grant, Vollsedt, AMC, 1976 - track???? Ontario???

Very cool info on Johnny Carson. I did not know that he was much of a driver. Just shows that learning never stop.

The car was a March 83C Cosworth according to my records.

I got the Johnny Carson thing from

Team Lotus: The Indianapolis Years-- Andrew Ferguson

I have to check to see if I have that Lotus book. I have the one just on the turbine car but the author name slips my mind.

My info on Sneva came from the 84 CART media guide. Although it could be wrong. Nice site you have.

Perfect, your turn.
Sneva competed in this car at Elkhart and Laguna, and teammate Cogan at Elkhart and Mid-Ohio.

there sure isn't much difference between the Theodore and the March. Does anyone know the history/lineage of the Theodore??
