From what I just found I would say it Is Jim Clark in an early 1968 (late 1967??) test - I never knew he drove that car - good find Phoenix!! (if that is right let ykiki have it - he got it first...)

Oh yeah, I agree. I thought it was Phoenix who said it wasn't Clark...it's from a test in "spring" 1968 where Clark and Jones were present.

This is my first submission (and I'm afraid the scan didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped). I correctly guessed the Charles Nearburg picture a couple weeks ago, but between losing power for several days and then the holidays, I never submitted a photo. So, guessing Jim Clark gives me a second chance. My appologies, and a Happy New Year to all.

Great Photo. That Lola the Mark Donohue was driving had several different engines in it depending on the track they raced at. That was some hard racing back then. Both drivers spun out during the race must be right after this photo.

speaking of learning thing - I got two AWESOME racing books for Christmas - one was the autobiography by Dr. Steve Olvey - one of the chief people behindthe CART medical team - very insightful and interesting... I am having a hard time judging if I want to take everything as fact he seems a little full of himself at times - but at other points he seems very down to earth..... a worthwhile read for any CART fan....

also, for those of you who have spent time at Rumbledrome - I got "King of the Boards" - the book by Gary Doyle about Jimmy Murphy and his era. Really cool - lots of pictures. According to my wife when you call to order the book you actually talk to Gary - she said he sounded a little disappointed that she was a racing fan's wife (an not an actual fan) so he couldn't really chew the fat with her too much :)

They did. Al Unser won the pole @ 170.221 in 1970
Peter Revson was on pole @ 178.696 in 1971
Bobby Unser won the pole @ 195.940 in 1972

That year Cale Yarborough (Yes, the NASCAR driver) was 33rd fastest @ 178.864, so the pole winning speed in 1971 would not have qualified in 1972  :)

It's a twin-engined front and rear engined car.

I don't know how it ran, but I do know it was a DNQ.
It also appeared at Phoenix in November of that year, but is listed as a DNQ, too slow.

I don't have much it DNQ at Indy due to a lack of speed the fastest lap was 149 mph. The chassis has two Lancia gearboxes (one for each engine), aluminum bodywork and the engines were mounted forward of the wheels on both the ends. Huffaker is still in business making chassis. Came across their site looking a restored Huffaker with MG liquid suspension. Those cars were at Indy 1964 to 1966 just wonder where the Porsche powered one is at now.

The stats on the race say what were they thinking. It was a 500 Kilometer race distance or (313.5 Miles) on a 3.3 mile road course. It was held in the end of August in what is basically a low desert area. Temps had to be about 115 digress maybe more. They just worked those oval cars in to the ground they were not meant for that kind of racing.

I bet the drivers were just used up after the race like the NASCAR Bristol race during the summer.

The Indy 500's in question were 1972 with Mark Donohue. USAC was scoring Gary Bettenhausen as Donohues car and there was a difference in laps and Parnelli team thought that Donohue was behind. Penske backed by Goodyear was declared the winner at midnight. Al Unser would have to wait 6 years before No.3 win.

The last one was 2002 with Paul Tracy. Everyone was shocked by the final ruling no matter if it was right or wrong. Never heard that a team could not appeal a win if there was a scoring error.

I noticed his name while I was doing some research on the Pete Hasmer picture and it rang familiar to me, because I enjoy dirt racing too. Motors TV is broadcasting these days a World of Outlaws event in New Zealand and there are two members of the Kinser family in the race (including Sheldon's cousin, Steve).

Here's a truly amazing fact about Sheldon Kinser's Indy career :
Six time starter of the Indianapolis 500, [...] Sheldon had never driven a rear engine car or raced on pavement until he quailified 26th and finished 12th in the 1975 Indianapolis 500.

It was a little bit of a brain tweak with so many Champcar/Sprint car drivers. I was reading an article about Kinser and he was an amazing driver. So many drivers back then came from dirt track backgrounds even 2 time CART Champ Al Unser Jr. Imagine how many it would be now if USAC had went to the rear engine sprinters.

#1 - AJ Foyt (Watson-Offy)
outside front row - Jim Clark (Lotus-Ford)
#12 - Dan Gurney (Lotus-Ford)
#5 - Don Branson (Watson-Offy)

nope, well except for the front engine thing.... and that day it was not quite so obsolete....

Foyt is right
year is wrong
Gurney is in the picture and in a Lotus but not #12
other drivers wrong

keep digging - this one has an interesting story behind it....

Right year and I think the last driver is Don Branson instead of Tinglestead....

so how about the track? (I guess I forgot to say that it was not Indy) and the really odd thing the photo is showing...

you got it, the strange event is that Foyt is actually starting from the pole in his dirt track car after (I think) wrecking his Lotus in practice and having nothing else to race... talk about running what you brung!!

Story goes that Parnelli Jones had a the press at Phoenix for the unveiling and Al Unser drove it first on track. He pulled back in and he was white as a ghost according to Mario. Unser then told them tell the press the car broke as it is junk and would not drive it again until it was changed. After the changes it was a competitive car in 1972.
