Oh my gosh!!!

I hereby officially apologize to the IRL and its fans for every joke (and there were LOTS of them) I ever made about their spec Dallara Lawn Darts being the ugliest formula cars ever created.

Awful and ugly don't even begin to cover how bad those things look!!!

I have slagged off the Indy cars in the past few years as well. Normally good looking cars win the championship in F1, what will happen this year. These new cars almost look as bad as that dodgy williams from a few years back....The new Indy cars look great for 2012.

The new Indy Cars are sexy. I hope that they are safe.

That's a nice shot of the Lotus Indycar. fans of tradional indycars aren't big fans of it, but we each have different problems with various parts of it.

it's ok. I got used to f1 cars being ugly with those hideous dis proportioned wings... and after all it's all about being fast... being beautiful it's just the cherry on top of the cake... and the DRS as the $h1t icing on the cake

i can't help thinking that i wouldn't want to be sat in a car that's side on across the track with that high nose bearing down on me. it'd take your head clean off. airborne cars from nose to wheel contact could be a feature this year.

mclaren has the best(read conventional) looking car at the moment. either they've got it right and everyone else is wrong or they'll have another season of playing catch up.

Comparing the pictures above I have to say that I like a current F1 car more than the new DW12 Indycar. People may call F1's nose 'legoescue', but to me it makes even less sense, why should the sidepods of an IndyCar widen so much backwards - it makes the car look really boxy. Or I am just so used to F1's really tight and compact designs. :)

The Dallara is designed and constructed to minimize the possibility of wheel to wheel contact by protecting the rear wheels. protecting the driver from impacts from another car also led at least partially to the low nose designs prevalent in indycars. Think Zanardi at Lausitzring.... or not.

AGREE. the best looking car by a long shot.

New Indycar was design by special comittee and is idiot proof for three wide in to chicane .

Even with an ugly nose Red Bull will be the team to beat, that´s for sure. Their solution gets a lot of airflow to the diffusor as I see it, and adding to their already good down force.

I thought the excuse of this was for safety. The nose of the Ferrari almost looks like a very sharp chisel or knife blade.

Surely the safer thing would be to encourage a thicker nose with a flatter, lower front than this design? Why not have a maximum height off the ground at the front that is much lower than the current type sloping up at a steeper angle to the highest point of the nose at the suspension arms.

I'm not a huge fan of the look of the 2012 indycars, but it does look much lower to the ground than the 2012 F1 cars.

Of the stepped-nose cars, Toro Rosso has the best looking one, IMO.

McLaren, however, is still the most aesthetically pleasing.

To add to Nigel and FIAT1's comments: an early concept version of the DW12 showed differently shaped sidepods for the roadcourse configuration.

I would guess some bean counter decided that it would be better to just have one set of sidepods for oval and road races. The oval sidepods were as wide as their counterparts, but bulkier in the rear to direct air away from the rear tire and reduce drag.

I love the look of the new Dallara Indycar and to be honest, I don't think the Ferrari looks all that bad.

I dont mind the nose.

And a plus is the driver has a nice flat surface for when he gets lost on the circuit and wants to stop for a picnic. Ideal Picnic Table...

Even though I'm no longer a Ferrari fan, I've always thought their F1 cars were usually quite beautiful. But upon seeing that picture, I threw up in my mouth... just a little bit. Hideous! As ugly as these 2012 F1 cars are, they damn well better be fast. Goodus griefus.

I can't say that I was initially a fan of the design-by-committee Indy Car (see, I've even stopped saying "IRL"!), but that Lotus is QUITE sharp.

I'd rather have the F1 car.

The new Indycar looks like it doesn't know if it wants to be an open wheeler or a sportscar. They might as well have Hot Wheels as the title sponsor.

I'll admit to thinking the DW12 was ugly and bulky on first viewing, but it has grown on me. Doubly so, having seen it in the Lotus colours (well, JPS colours if we're being picky), as I think that looks pretty fetching. The rear does look a bit fussy, but it's driven by a genuine requirement (as the DW code sadly attests), so I can live with it. The F1 nose stuff however doesn't seem to serve any real purpose beyond being able to meet new rules with minimum compromise to the rest of the car. I can understand why the teams have done it, as they're not about to completely change design philosophy, but it's still hideous. There's some analysis of the different approach taken by McLaren Here (http://scarbsf1.wordpress.com/).

FIA better change the regulations in order to stop this design nonsense.

That Lotus Indy-thingy is just hideous! It's begining to blurr the distinction between open wheeler and LMP 1 cars, IMO.

F1 whilst ugly, are at least blessed with the look of a racing car, whilst the Lotus thing looks a little like an 80's design study.

Formula One could be rid of the stepped nose ahead of next season after Charlie Whiting revealed that even the FIA finds the design ugly.

The noses are ugly by design because of the technical restrictions imposed by the FIA in the first place! LOL!

The noses are ugly by design because of the technical restrictions imposed by the FIA in the first place! LOL!

According to Ross Brawn, it seems not:

"It is unfortunate," Brawn said, "and the teams should look at themselves and blame themselves.

"[Governing body] the FIA tried to do what they could and a number of teams wouldn't agree to the changes because they said they wanted to carry over their chassis, which we all know is a load of nonsense because nobody has carried over their chassis.

"We've ended up with a very odd feature on the cars which is not very endearing and I'm sure will get fixed for 2013."

The redesigned nose is a response to the FIA directive that the front end be lowered. Most teams took the creative approach to implement the “stepped” nose to achieve this while maintaining the height downstream of the bulkhead.

19th March 2012, 16:51
Blaming the FIA is easy but considering Brawn is much respected his response he makes it clear the teams had a say in the regulation but could not agree on the implementation, made their excuses so the FIA stepped in. The teams are as much to blame as the FIA.
