Camcorder setting

I'll be going to visit this year's Indy 500 and I would like to take along my Panasonic camcorder. It has an integrated microphone. After watching some Indy video clips at youtube's, I figured out that some people had an issue with an overmodulating microphone (due to the loudness of the cars) while others did not have that problem. Unfortunately, my camcorder has no manual microphone attenuation.
Is there any way of getting non-overmodulating sound?

With tape? Well, I don't know if this is a good idea. Does the Indianapolis Speedway allow people to take along a camcorder to the track?
