Looks a lot like the rally I went to over the weekend in Michigan. Driving around was a lot of fun since the roads were like driving through tracks of diamonds sparkling under a full moon.
Back home the temperature rose from -6 on Sunday to +15.5(!) yesterday evening with heavy rain. It's foggy with a little spitting rain and 4 now, but headed to -1 and snow by the time I get out of work. Should be an interesting ride home on the bike. Stupid temperature fluctuations.

I ditched the car and rode on my mountainbike to work. sligtly below freezing, only 1cm of light snow on top of a well groomed bike lane.
Good times :)

A BIG one is coming ....
The North East is going to get hit pretty bad ( the media surely hopes so) -
And now to continue with our "let's name these disasters" custom, they are now naming winter storms.
Guess what this one is being called:
Ready for this?

They used to name hurricanes after women, though both male and female names are used now. I understand the weather service is only going to name snow storms after men. That's because you are never sure when they are coming or how many inches you'll get.

On a side note, does anybody know the origin of the phrase "Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey" ?
A materials engineer told me that the common explanation of iron cannon balls on a brass frame (or monkey) falling through because of differential contraction in the cold is a load of spherical rhomboids as the numbers simply don't work.
I think it is somehow connected to the three wise monkeys whose hands are occupied doing other things and can't keep their vitals warm.

Umm… just a few clarifications:
The driveway was full of 15 to 20 cm of wet heavy snow, coupled with drifts over 30cm in some parts.
Because of the geometry of the the rounded cul-de-sac that we live on, I had to shovel a good part of the road ( :s ).
The sidewalk was also shoveled.
One of my neighbour’s driveway was also shoveled (they just had a newborn baby :) )
I didn’t really have a hernia  .

I find that quite a good thing to help is just to do some exercise. It turns you yourself into a heater for a while, which I guess makes a small difference to the room. :p Even just jumping up and down like you would with a skipping rope usually warms me up pretty quickly. :)

Matter of fact I prefer malls and cinemas. But the radiators should work 'cos the rooms are too big and high. A few years ago it was so cold - about -25C- and the water in the pipes got frozen. I had to resist about 2 weeks without water because temperatures were always below O. I had to carry water from neighbours, take showers and wash laundry at friends and even collected melted water from the roof for toilets.
That's why I hate winter from the bottom of my heart. Last summer I invested a lot of money on a heating project based on gas but due to my brother's iresponsability (theoretically he owns half of the apartment) I couldn't get permissioon to the gas network.

Be sure there's some way to shut it off inside the house so it doesn't freeze and burst on you!
Over the winter I've been wiping the bike down every week, with two major cleanings. Different wards along my commute use different plowing methods and different amounts of salt. I've stopped for a number of accidents due to ice and geese but survived the winter without incident myself.

It's officially summer here in this part of the world and boy has it been raining.
It's been the rainiest June - I don't mind the rain but it can cause havoc in some places.

The rainy season ended last week. Some parts of the country were affected by storms or floods but I was lucky from this point of view.
Now we enjoy the usual 35 C degrees ( measured in the shadow ).
I feel a terrible urge to leave all behind and take the first train to the seaside and to throw myself into the sea with my clothes on.
Maybe it's time to start a thread about summer where we shall share our experiences about melting our brains on high temperatures,

Here's a quick method for converting Centigrade (Celsius) to Fahrenheit exactly:
Double it
Subtract 10%
Add 32
I don't know about anyone else, but I find temperature far more difficult to handle than weight, length, volume and speed. And mercifully the 'decimal day' only surfaces on April 1st.
Back on topic, here in the south of England we've had gales and rain but no snow[yet!] and mercifully no fog - my pet driving hate

We talked about this today, I remembered the formula to have -32, 5 and 9. :)
Just checked in Wikipedia and from F to C it goes like this:
100 °F to °C: (100 ? 32) * 5/ 9 °C = 38 °C
55 °C to °F: 55 * 9 / 5 + 32 °F = 131 °F
I do think the Celsius scale makes more sense as it's tied to water and uses 0 and 100. Where as Fahrenheit's anchor points are from some Dutch guy's arm pit and the freezing point of squirrel snot. ;)

Thankfully our deep-freeze seems to be over... for now.
P.s. no snowblower for schmenke :(
Snow like we used to get .
Another foot or so of snow today , so far , and they're saying we should be the other side of zero on the weekend .
We get lake effect snow here , by Huron , so we're pretty used to it , although it's been quite a while since we've had as deep a winter as to make us all remember what is normal for around these parts .
It's deep and cold around here in winter , or , it's supposed to be anyway .
I can't remember when the last time I had to throw snow above my shoulder height in my back yard , to get to my vehicle was now , but that was a regular , every winter thing when we first arrived here 23 years ago .
You send us the cold from the prairies , and we turn it into snow across the lake .
It feels kinda nostalgic out there , even if it is a little hard to walk .

^Well it's a good thing I understand it. That's not cold bro, that's ridiculously cold!! I'll take 23C thank you ;)
It is actually a bit nippy here at night. This is a function of a disruption in our onshore flow caused by high pressure in the desert to the northeast!
Yeah , it's a balmy -13.3C here right now , but the drifts are still fluffy as a result , so the shovelling is easy , though there's not much point until it stops snowing .
Those cats I mentioned in Tucson , I should note , were bundling into sweaters at about 75F .
Hence the shudders .

I don't get it. They say it's a warm winter. It's true we have not snow, not even in the mountains, but it's +4 and still I'm always cold. It's also weird that temperatures are higher at the montains than in my hometown. For weeks we face a "british" fog and all my bones are aching. This morning I even couldn't walk and had to take a cab. I'll do everything for a warm sunny day....

Ok , maybe a slight exaggeration . Call it 72F .
They were a wussy bunch of crazy hippies all camped out in our friend's yard at the foot of Mt. Lemon .

My only complaint, actually more of a concern is the lack of rainfall in the San Diego area. We are almost completely dependant on water from Northern California (Sierra snowpack) and the Colorado River.

I had a strange one yesterday. It had been a sunny when we went out to the shops during the day followed by a clear evening. Then I had to take the car out about 9pm. Temperatures had dropped and there was thick frost on all the windows (thick enough that it would only scrape off with difficulty so I used a spray). Nothing unusual there.
But, there was also thick frost on the inside of the windscreen. So thick that I had to use the window scraper and it covered the dash with ice crystals so it looked like snow. I've seen frost on the inside before but never that thick - and it wasn't that cold either. Puzzling

I had problems with inside of the windows freezing over night. It's mostly because my commute isn't long enough to properly dry the car's interior. Few months ago I bought a space heater for the car, no more problems If I have access to electrical socket.

Here is one I'm sure you all UK boyz can relate to, pretty unusual in these parts; I went to a friend’s (to watch NFL Playoffs) that is pretty far afield. I left his house in Ocean Beach got on interstate 8 and headed inland. It was a little Foggy, but as I started to enter the small valleys that are prominent in what is referred to as our riparian woodlands it got so foggy I had to actually pull over for about an hour because visibility was practically nil. I doubt it had anything to do with the beer we had while watching the games
Anyway San Diego has a big game today...... Go Chargers! Beat Denver........again :sailor:

British fog is a myth! 100 years ago London did have major fog or smog problems every winter because of all the coal fires. Then in 1956 they passed the Clean Air Act which banned the burning of soft coal (but burning coke is allowed). This together with a move towards gas heating, whether direct or as fuel for the central heating boiler, eliminated the smog. We still get occasional foggy days in winter but the London "pea souper" is a thing of the past. You still get mist or fog near the sea or on hills or in damp valleys in the country. But no worse than anywhere else at similar latitudes.

It's real, it's just massive air pollution and not fog. Considering how cold it was at the beginning of the week today it's well above freezing and now we're having localized flooding as big piles of snow are melting.

Chicago is -18 (feels like -30) C today, and it was the same up in Michigan last weekend but with a nice 30 inch base of snow with nicely groomed roads. Temperatures are cold enough for the snow to be very grippy. It reminded me why I enjoy owning a Subaru, though I spent some time helping a friend publicize his wheel franchise:

I'm in Bruce County , fifteen minutes inland from Lake Huron , at the bottom of the Bruce Peninsula , southern Ontario .
That six inches overnight has turned into an foot or a little more over the day .
The weather is predicted as snow , snow , and then some more snow , for the next week or so .
The snowshoes will go into the vehicle today . I was wishing they were in there yesterday when I trudged in to get the snowblower running .
If your family is here in the "Queen's Bush" , they are not moving around much on the roads .
This snow is easy to move , but makes for crappy snowman conditions .
