I was at an auto show over the weekend and Honda had a Dallara IndyCar on display. It was in Target/Chip Ganassi Racing #9 Scott Dixon livery and was in speedway trim. Dixon's name was not on the car though. The info card said the car is chassis #12 and was first raced by Al Unser, Jr. in 2004.

However, the chassis tag in the cockpit says #11. How many Dallara chassis of this generation (2003+) were made? Were they serially numbered since 2003 or did the serial number sequencing change with each production run?

I'm wondering about #11's history as well as if it was really raced by Ganassi or was just used as a livery show car.

Well, I'm not sure... But if you take a very good look at the 2003 chassis you can see it has some minor differences, compared to the chassis used in 2004. The 2004 chassis was even the one which was used for the last time in 2011. I dunno if they started counting the amount of chassis in 2004 or in 2003. I can remember I ever saw an older IndyCar (the 2002 chassis) with a Formula One Jordan 197 skin on it, so it might be just a show car. From the 2002 chassis I saw I was 100% sure it was, because Jordan never has been an IndyCar team xD.

I figure this is as good a place as any for this, plus I find it odd that a DW12(albeit with an awful livery) makes its way to any stage as a promo car at such an early stage in the year. What are there, maybe 15 chassis that have been delievered thus far? Maybe it's Chevy's test car, but I'd doubt it...

It could be the original Indycar test chassis.

Hey I just noticed there is a Grand-Am sticker on the horizontal portion of the front wing endplate. What's that all about? Grand-Am is NASCAR, not IndyCar? Strange????

On second thought .... is this car promoting the Detriot race, which does have Grand-Am, rather than simply the IndyCar series? That's probably it.
