Hello Everybody,

Basically all my life itīs been one of my biggest dreams to visit the Rally Dakar.
But since they moved from Africa to South America this dream became ever more unrealistic than it was before.

However I will make a bike-trip through Peru and Bolivia in January and February next year and thatīs my chance to finally see the Dakar.

I will be in the area around Lima and Nazca in the beginning of January. The Dakar will drive through Nazca on January 14th.

Unfortunately I canīt find any detailed information about the exact route or spectator information...
Does anybody maybe have experience with visiting the Dakar and could give em some advice? Are there tickets needed or can I simply try to find a checkpoint the drivers need to drive through? Or is it best to simply visit the Bivac?

Thanks in advance. Any advice is very welcome.

Hi scholl,

It is a very good opportunity to see Dakar live.
I have watched 2009 and 2010 Dakar live (first on a dust road, second on Mendozaīs dunes), and it is a great experience.
Regarding route and spectators zones, the most difficult part is that exact route is secret and only given to particpants the night before. Spectators zones for each stage are published 24 to 48 hours before.

In both ocassions I went to places out of the organization established "spectators zones".
The point in 2009 was a dirt road, and after the map published by the organziation, there wasno toher option that going through there.

in 2010 in the dunes (there were some 8.000 to 10.000 people there!!!), it was a guess to how they would pass through the dunes. In fact we missed by 3 or 4 km the point, but after we saw the helcopter following first bikes we could change locations (we werea group in dirt bikes and quads, so easy to change place in the dunes).

I would recommend to go to the route itself, may be near end or begining of stage and late go to the service park. A lot of action there all night long.
Dakar organizers usually use locals to help them whith control, and for safety (police and local authorities), so some points of the route is know by locals close to the day of race. You will be able to guess some places.
If do not want to risk, theer is always the spectator zone possibility.

This tread should start to have somemovement from now on.

Regarding entres and possibilities:

First the X-raid armada: 100peopple 100 cars, tons of spares an support trucks, best experience out there and with most experienced driver:
Mini:
Peterhansel
Holowcick
Roma
Novitsky
Leal dos santos

X3:
Minorenko
Garafulic (good chilean driver, who gained experinece in 2011 RR)
Schott

2 Team as candidate: RObby Gordons Hummer. Still small structure, no exclusive racing support
Nasser Al Attiyah: last minute deal, no real experience on a 2wd long travel suspension set up. Plenty of sand this year may help the Hummer
Robby Gordon

3rd Team Toyota South Africa / Overdrive
Giniel de Villers (one of the best Dakar Drivers)
Duncan Vos (4 times Southafrican champion, but new to Dakar)
Orlando Terranova (Privateer but with speed, his puts a lot of preassure on himself and usually lost everything)
Lucio Alvarez (low profile, but achieved a 15 position last year racing alone wh little support)

I will follow on next post if someone interested

Or maybe the two Great Wall developped by SMG for Sousa and a Chinese Driver !

What about the Racing Lancers of the Dutch drivers? Wevers, Ten Brinke, Van Loon... how can they perform?

JHvP
25th December 2011, 14:19
I expect them in the end of top 10.

25th December 2011, 14:34
There is also Brazilian driver Guilherme Spinelli in a Racing Lancer, with official support of Mitsubishi Brazil. Last year they were in 9th overall and second fastest on the gasoline class.

Here in Brazil there is a big expectation regarding their participation and I`d expect at least a top 10 finish.

ZequeArgentina
26th December 2011, 13:45
The RacingLancrers are excellent cars, they are very reliable and with the rules giving some benefit for gasoline engines, they can be in better situation (all switched to gasoline, some 3,5 others 4,0 and even Dessoude is running one with a 3,7 Nissan engine!!).

ten brinke debutted in last Morocco rally and won it, he was a good surprise.,
Spinelli has run very consistently and comes with the win in Sertoes so may be the one we can expect most.

I guess more than 2 of them in the top 10!

vino_93
28th December 2011, 00:03
Ten Brinke and Spinelli could do a Top 10, and maybe more ...

I don't expect a lot about the Mini ... too more retirements for them.

Robby Gordon talks Dakar 2012 preparations - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKrLKsGxvRU&feature=related) (Hummer team) Will the new 2 wd be the right configuration choice for this years' event?

If Van Loon drives as fast as he talks he should be well placed. :burnout:

I would be very suprised if Mini do not win. They have 2-4 very fast drivers and I do not think all of them will have reliability problems.

ZequeArgentina
29th December 2011, 12:53
The X-raid team has all of its 8 drivers and 100-people team aligned to make Peterhansel the winner.
It is Dakar, so anything can happen, but from a preparation point of view, he has the main advantage

I think the Toyota's have a good chance of upsetting the applecart, the only real question is reliability over such a long distance.

These cars are run on the South African circuit which is much shorter, nothing exceeding 3 days of competition, but with the experience of Giniel de Villiers im cautiously optimistic for a good result.

How many chances have Al Attiyah with the Hummer? I see him as a good opponent for the X-Raid armada...

JHvP
30th December 2011, 12:22
I afraid he has not experiences with 2WD, so he can lose same time especially in first sandy stages. And Hummer was not very reliable in Dakar 2011.

Weird serious accident for crew of Aleš Loprais on the long asphalt road section between two parts of yesterdays leg. Mechanic Petr Almáši was driving the truck on the road section when both crew members were sleeping. Unfortunately he was caught by a momentary micro sleep and went off road where the truck rolled. Aleš Loprais suffered double vertebrae fracture and Petr Almáši a brain concussion. Michal Ernts is unhurt.

So far the crew of Aleš was the only one to keep close fight for victory with Dutch Iveco crew of Gerard de Rooy in truck competition.

thx boys !

I see that some drivers were not in the classification of a stage, but they start the next and continue the Dakar ... is it that these drivers were out of the delay, or is it another thing ?

For exemple, Stefan Schott is not classified for the second stage but he is still running. And there are a lot of other examples ... does someone know why ?

And this is why I am no longer a fan of al-Attiyah. Real team player, almost crashes Sainz out last year and quits early this year. Robbie could have used his support for the rest of the rally.

Nasser drove like a madman, you need to take care of the truck! Robbie proved that if you could drive sanely that the Hummers could truly be a force. He really lost it though in the end, he started driving like a mad man.

I don't want to be mean but if you truly think, deep down inside, that you would rather have a cute little Mini than a Hummer you have to be a girl. I mean, come on!

Hardly. I would rather have something competitive AND reliable. Also want something far removed from the association with Robbie Gordon.
