View Full Version : Why did the tabloids slam Ken Clarke when Theresa May lied?

This story has really made my blood boil this week.

The Home Secretary innacurately claimed that a Bolivian student was saved from deportation because his pet cat granted him the residency due to 'the right for family life'.

Now anybody who has done a few minutes of research can find out that this is complete nonsense Conservative catflap: the truth behind Maya and the deportation row | Politics | The Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2011/oct/04/cat-claim-theresa-may-truth?newsfeed=true). So why has a member of the cabinet been allowed to get away with it?

Also, why are the tabloids calling for Ken Clarkes resignation, after he rightly told her that it wasn't true?

using the Guardian immediately means you're staring from a bad point. What May said was true, the cat signified somehow that he had an established home life here so could not be deported, so she was right the cat was important to him not being deported although in fairness to KC it was not the main reason which she gave the impression it was.

Where she was wrong was she picked an odd case to highlight here point.

This is a far better one

BBC News - Amy Houston's father welcomes immigration plans (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lancashire-15166070)

But whatever happens there is nothing wrong with the Human Rights bill it is just daft lefty judges who misinterpretate it by allowing criminal illegal immigrant scum the right to remain in Britain. It is a privilege to stay here and if they don't obey our laws then time they fecked off.

Ken Clarke is disliked is threatening to just about everyone. To the right wing Tories his views seem disturbingly liberal. To the Labour Party he's charismatic and shares some common ground with them but he's also a Tory and takes votes away from them.

You can tell from the way his sensible comments on rape sentencing were deliberately twisted and used against him. The media from all parts of the spectrum love to bash him. Its a shame because I really rate the guy.

What's not to dislike about someone who was on the board of a tobacco multinational who targeted children in developing countries?

Because he doesn't let his political background cloud his judgment when it comes to his policy decisions. Think about it, a Tory who was happy to consider joining the Euro if conditions were right and who thinks there might be more to crime reduction than just chucking people into prison and locking away the key. Not only that but a Home Secretary who believes in cutting down government intrusion into private lives.

If you delve into the business backgrounds of various politicians you'll always find something nasty. I find it despicable for example that Labour's NHS policy was made by people who were on the boards of private healthcare companies, something the media was never interested in mentioning.

That's just the usual pinko media trying a bit of Tory bashing, happens as soon as they are in power, always has done always will do.

The public rate him, they would much rather have him as Chancellor than Brown, Darling, Osbourne or Cable.
