View Full Version : 2011 Chase; Fictional versus Real

I have been working on another little, admittedly meaningless, project. I came up with a chart that depicts the real life chaser's results at the most recent race at the 10 chase tracks. The chart starts with the real life chase seedings after Richmond (so Harv and Shrub, for example, started with the same 2012 points they did in real life). And since I didn't come up with the idea until after Chicagoland was run, the results there are from the chase race that occured the week before last. 8 of the remaining 9 races were from the spring/summer races at those tracks from this year, and the Homestead-Miami results are from last year's race.

So the "Fictional 2011 Chase" through week 2 is as follows:

001 T Stewart..............2090
002 R Newman...............2088
t03 J Johnson..............2078
t03 Ku Busch...............2078
005 K Harvick..............2077
006 C Edwards..............2076
007 D Earnhardt Jr.........2070
008 J Gordon...............2063
t09 M Kenseth..............2054
t09 D Hamlin...............2054
011 B Keselowski...........2049
012 Ky Busch...............2043

The "Real 2011 Chase" standings are:

001 T Stewart..............2094
002 K Harvick..............2087
003 B Keselowski...........2083
004 C Edwards..............2080
005 J Gordon...............2071
t06 Ky Busch...............2068
t06 M Kenseth..............2068
t06 D Earnhardt Jr.........2068
009 Ku Busch...............2066
010 J Johnson..............2065
011 R Newman...............2060
012 D Hamlin...............2028

Now-what does it all mean? Nothing, absolutely nothing at all-but it is fun to see just where everything stacks up versus what "could have been". I guess it means a little more to me because I have the whole chart done, so I know who the winner of the fictional chase is. You'll just have to wait to find out as the season goes along.

It also allows me to play with the numbers another way-to take the real numbers so far and add the next previous race results to have an idea what the points could look like coming out of Dover next week. Just a hint there, if things were to play out the same way they did in May (and yes, I know, they NEVER DO so save it) then the top 3 would be Harvick (2121), Edwards (2118), and Kenseth (2115).

The first chart is the predicted overall fictional standings after the up coming race at Dover:

009 J Gordon...............2090
010 Ky Busch...............2083
011 D Hamlin...............2082
012 B Keselowski...........2080

The next chart is still "fictional", but its the real standings through week 2 with the fictional results for week 3 added in:

001 K Harvick..............2121
002 C Edwards..............2118
003 M Kenseth..............2115

012 D Hamlin...............2056

We'll see what happens for real on Sunday, of course. But a definite trend is developing here early.
