In a preview for the weekend's major event on August 14, the IZOD IndyCar Series will qualify for the MoveThatBlock.com INDY 225 Saturday afternoon. The day will also feature two races from the American-Canadian Tour, a NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race and qualifying for the Firestone Indy Lights 100.
When the Indy Racing League last raced at Loudon, Sam Schmidt and Robbie Buhl were hired guns rather than team owners, Tony Stewart was still shopping at Menards and Davey Hamilton was halfway towards his run of 43 consecutive starts in the IRL.
Prior to its transformation into the IZOD IndyCar Series, the IRLat least in when is visited Loudon for the final time in 1998was an altogether different animal.
The series drivers represent 13 different countries and today Brazilian racers Helio Castroneves, Tony Kanaan and Ana Beatriz joined NHMS executive vice president and general manager Jerry Gappens for some Brazilian style dining at the Muqueca Restaurant in Cambridge, Mass.
One of the greatest things about the IZOD IndyCar Series is the diversity, said Gappens. Not only do they have the traditional American motorsport names like Andretti and Rahal, they have an international flair for the fans. It really shows the tremendous growth of the series.
Tony Kanaan, driver of the No. 82 Geico KV Racing Technology-Lotus became the first driver to complete every lap of every race for an entire season on his way to winning his 2004 series championship. Kannan is one of the few drivers who have tested at NHMS.
Its more like Milwaukee than Richmond, he said. I know theres some banking at Loudon, but you dont really feel it too much. Its hard to judge how the racing will be right now, but I think it could also be a lot like Milwaukee, which is great. I think this is going to be a very physical race for everyone.
Kanaans team owner, 1996 CART champion Jimmy Vasser, made three starts at Loudon from 1993-1995 and has fond memories of the track.
