Well. I think that it deserves its own thread this year. There will be some SWRC drivers, WRC Academy drivers and probably some WRC drivers/teams making their preparations for rally Finland.

15-16. July, South-Estonia

Official site:
http://rallyestonia.com/
Entries:
http://autosport.ee/rallyreg/?page=27&race_id=150&

Historic entries:
They are going to appear in the root of this page: http://autosport.ee/rallyreg/?lang_id=2&

National entries:
http://autosport.ee/rallyreg/?page=27&race_id=153&

Well, Prokop has confirmed his participation already.
There is possibility that we can see Tänak (SWRC), Ketomaa (WRC or R4),
Kaur (WRC Academy),
Breen (WRC Academy),
Karyakin (WRC Academy)
And speculations about Mini WRC team participation.

Yes, Ketomaa's entry has been there since the 17th, but it haven't been mentioned here earlier. I would guess S2000 for Östberg, though of course both ways are open until otherwise mentioned.

“We are doing Estonia definitely but I don’t know if we are doing it with [my Ford Fiesta RS WRC] or my Super 2000 [version],” said Ostberg. “Hopefully we’ll did it with the World Rally Car because I really want to do some testing and get some more time in the car. It helps to come to a rally feeling prepared and the rally has good similarity to Finland. But as always you have to drive with what you have.”

I think MTV3 has got it wrong - at least on the entries and event website it's only about father Latvala. Would there be point in driving rally in RWD historic car just prior to Rally Finland, and lately Ford has been also testing around two weeks before Rally Finland.

It's only Jari, JM's father.

Many places mix it up because JM is sometimes referred as only "Jari" and therefore a quick glimpse of the list makes it look like he would be taking part. That is not the case.

Meeke and team-mate Dani Sordo are about to embark on a pre-event test in Finland while Meeke will also take part on a practice event, Rally Estonia, from 15-16 July, which Meeke has said is a “brilliant way to get back into the car again.”

Although Meeke will be a favourite for victory in Estonia, the MINI WRC Team insists winning the rally is the last thing on its mind.

“Kris didn’t get a huge amount of gravel mileage in Sardinia [due to a throttle problem] so we’re going to give him some extra [running] in Estonia,” said Prodrive’s Richard Taylor. “The test car that does the Finland test will then go on to do the rally so we’re doing it with the test car. There is certainly no attempt to win the rally outright, it’s a test.”

I think their houses might be full, but they have unlimited amount of space for tents. And place is nice, I think it is around 5 minutes drive to SS1. There you can rent a whole house with three bedrooms or some smaller houses. Normally it is winter resort, but they work during the summer as well. I will be around 5 minutes from that place (a few km-s from the Ss1). Contact them directly, their international homepage is crap (some rices still in kroons only)

Didn't seem full last time I checked. There's still 4 available hotels (or "hotels") to choose from at rallyestonia.com. I booked a room for our group of three on Tuesday from GMP Clubhotel. It's just over 1km walk to ss2/3. Wasn't the cheapest but rally ain't a hobby for the poor.

I think that it is related to the fact that Peugeot is one of the main sponsors of the rally and probably there is some kind of deal with local Peugeot dealer. Rally Estonia 2011 - (http://www.rallyestonia.com/rally/) look at the sponsors list at the bottom of the page.

Well, because of Meeke's crash in tests yesterday, they didn't have the opportunity to test on "smaller" (=narrower) road. They had an opportunity to use smaller road today, but they didn't. I guess the decision was made then and they will test tomorrow in Finland on narrower roads.

That leads to logistical problems, because the test car needs to be in Rally Estonia on Thursday (scrutineering) and recce car already on Wednesday etc.

Just came back from the first day. And I saw how Märtin was driving.. no chance for Ostberg, totally different league. Also saw Vasarauzis crash, infamous place from the city stage. Too fast in the very long left hand corner and.. bang into the tree! Luckily codriver is OK. But car retired due to the rollcage damage. Prokop was very spectacular on that corner as well (on two or three wheels). One more roll (Rubli) and two spins on that same corner.
Koitla did superb job, was extremely fast everywhere (I also saw him on SS1).
Shame that Ketomaa retired jut before reaching to my spot in SS1. Later saw him on the half way to service and car was parked on the side of the road.
Looking forward to tomorrow:-)

I think Martin was just off pace tonight.

Not off pace, but he did participate with an old historic Focus and as you know he hasn't been driving for a while. Expected result for me :)
Besides, do not underestimate Ostberg and new WRC cars - they are both very fast! Looking at the results, it's clear that Markko knows these stages very well, since he was the only top driver who improved his time the least on the second pass through stages.

So do we know the reason of retiring Ketomaa for second time?

Look Markkos speed on Friday and you can see he was off pace on Saturday. He said that car dont have grip so i think he had a mental error or someting like that. Hes tactic didnt work aswell.

Tehnical, but i dont remember what it exactly was.

Ostberg promised to attack more on saturday and he delivered his promise. This was expected to happen :)

By mtv3.fi it was the gearbox again. The next rally for him with the Mitsu R4 will be at the end of August in Latvia.

A shortcut?

No, no way that he could find shortcut down there.. Driver explained to me today that he just simply drop from pacenotes and off the go! Luckily the car stayed on its wheels.. It might have been a spectacular roll if he, instead of turning to the field have had tryied to keep the car on the road with that speed on that place..

So, finally back from the rally. On the second day Ostberg was like reborn an Märtin at the same time looked like he was a bit sleeping. Went to the first corner of SS4 to finally see Ketomaa driving, just to see him before he fells into the problems again. Beautiful corner with a lot of moments, Then I traveled to SS6, 9 to one very fast left corner. Very nice driving by Ostberg, Gross and Märtin and big moment for Prokop and big moment for Kruuda during the second pass. Kruuda was by far the biggest and positive surprise of the rally. Ketomaa retired again approximately 600 meters before me, exactly the same distance on Day 1. Seems that I bring him bad luck (during SS4 I was less than 500 m from the start, so he didn't had enough time to retire :-P).

Egon Kaur also showed why he is leading WRC Academy. He retired before the first stage in Day 1 because of electrical fault. But in Day 2 he won all 6 stages and was nearly 2 minutes faster than anyone else. And the opposition was not weak: Kumpumäki, Breen, Fisher So, he is really trying to preserve his car in WRC events.

SS6,9 was the graveyard of the cars. The road itself is very good and fast, final part is till very good, but much slower and the final last 5-6 km-s was filled with crashed and broken cars.

Here you can see the pictures of the worst crashed car: Browse Album :: Rally Estonia 2011 (http://serxx.tmkk.ee/rally/index.php/Rally-Estonia-2011)

It happened on the finish line of SS6, seems that they forgot to note the last corner of the stage

Gross crashed focus, same stage, not too far away from the finish, rolled two times: http://www.upload.ee/image/1498994/P7167489.JPG

Every year there are new difficult places, you can see a few here:

SS 4,7:

In overall, it was awesome rally. Really tons of people and a lot of nice and fast cars!

Anyone know the reason why Kruuda drove a Fiesta S2000 instead of the Fabia?

He said that he wanted to try out different car (He has driven Skoda so far only - I mean amongst the 4WD cars) and hoped to get a few driving tips from Märtin. Seems that it all worked very well. He was quite rough in corners in Day but much betters in Day2. Probably he didn't want to risk with his NORF car as well.

Onboard of Vasaraudzis' crash.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYLlM_CTUQs (about 2:15 in to the video)

Looks like a place, nasty tightening. It surprises me how much damage the car received from such a "minor" crash.

From the onboard it looks slow. I was approximately 30 meters from that spot and the bang was quite strong. And it went exactly between two doors.

Yeah, I can imagine. Cameras ofcourse have a tendency to kill the sensation of speed. It's also over 1200 kilos of materia crashing to narrow object... Damage guaranteed, regardless of speed..

I know how you feel about Ketomaa, I was on Mökkiperä in that tight right where JM went off in 2007. Then in 2008 (because of map reading error) I was on Mökkiperä on that place where he hit the rock and lost the steering. 2009 I didn't want to go spectate JM on Mökkiperä. :D

Thanks for your report, lots of action there. :)

That`s my friends ;) In Russia everybody who know them laughing about this situation - people say that Alex Lukyanuk (aka 'Lucas') knew shorter way :)

Alex is amazingly quick - with old 2.0L FWD Astra he usually fights with 4WD Lancer Evo IX-X and Impreza STi!

At Rally Estonia he wins SS3 in national class (overall). He has the same time with legendary Margus Murakas (Lancer Evo X).

Yeah, you can see here that the speed was much higher than it was visible from the onboard footage.
