Jeepers, the first day has been and gone and we've not posted a thread on it!

Well, it's official - Casey Stoner and Valentino Rossi are at war! After a bit of a ceasefire for a while, both parties have been trading barbs at each other after FP2 and dislike seems to have descended into outright hatred of each other. It's a shame but makes things interesting!

MotoGP FP2 times:
1 58 Marco SIMONCELLI HONDA 1'37.663
2 1 Jorge LORENZO YAMAHA 1'37.724 0.061 0.061
3 26 Dani PEDROSA HONDA 1'37.727 0.064 0.003
4 46 Valentino ROSSI DUCATI 1'38.102 0.439 0.375
5 27 Casey STONER HONDA 1'38.102 0.439 0.000
6 5 Colin EDWARDS YAMAHA 1'38.203 0.540 0.101
7 17 Karel ABRAHAM DUCATI 1'38.473 0.810 0.270
8 11 Ben SPIES YAMAHA 1'38.563 0.900 0.090
9 69 Nicky HAYDEN DUCATI 1'38.596 0.933 0.033
10 8 Hector BARBERA DUCATI 1'38.611 0.948 0.015
11 7 Hiroshi AOYAMA HONDA 1'38.645 0.982 0.034
12 4 Andrea DOVIZIOSO HONDA 1'38.658 0.995 0.013
13 35 Cal CRUTCHLOW YAMAHA 1'38.760 1.097 0.102
14 24 Toni ELIAS HONDA 1'38.912 1.249 0.152
15 65 Loris CAPIROSSI DUCATI 1'39.021 1.358 0.109
16 14 Randy DE PUNIET DUCATI 1'39.137 1.474 0.116
17 19 Alvaro BAUTISTA SUZUKI 1'40.173 2.510 1.036

And to spice things up not just slightly more, Stoner and Rossi finished on the exact same time! Also, Karel Abraham continues to impress me and prove himself early on in his MotoGP career.

Where are you getting your info, Rod? I've scoured the other motorsport sites that I read and can find no war of words...not even on crash.net which loves salacious gossip and misrepresentation :o

Great qualifying session. I expect Simoncelli to win if he doesn't crash.

EDIT: The only war of words I can find is between Lorenzo and Simoncelli.

Jorge Lorenzo vehemently criticised Marco Simoncelli in the post-qualifying press conference at Estoril this afternoon as the pair's dispute over riding ethics escalated.

MotoGP is good value both on and off the track this year. :D

Where am I getting my info?? It's an opinion based on what I believe were Stoner's unwarranted off-the-cuff comments to Rossi on the day in response to an incident where Rossi simply over-cooked it and was man enough to apologize whereas Lorenzo's criticism of Simoncelli's riding style also slots well into the prima-donna/bitchy category. ..

Great qualifying session. I expect Simoncelli to win if he doesn't crash.

EDIT: The only war of words I can find is between Lorenzo and Simoncelli.

Actually, Stoner and Rossi had a big spat on Friday too. From MotoMatters:

The incident that ended the uneasy peace was fairly trivial, which is fitting for epic conflicts such as this. Towards the end of the second session of free practice, Valentino Rossi eased off the throttle, allowing Casey Stoner to get past. Rossi says he backed off to take a breather, before putting his head down for a final attempt at setting a fast time; Stoner says Rossi was waiting for him to get a tow. Stoner says Rossi's so desperate for a fast lap he'll wait for a tow; Rossi says that this happens in every practice session, and if Stoner is sick of people getting tows he should go race on his own.

It went downhill from there: Stoner says the signal he gave to Rossi - tapping the rear of his bike - was intended as a call to heel, Rossi being "like a dog who follows you everywhere." Rossi in turn said that if spent his time tapping the seat hump of his bike every time someone followed him, he would have broken several hundred of them. Stoner reiterated his point that Rossi's crash at Jerez was a "rookie mistake", while Rossi launched into an invective against Stoner's claims about him.

"Stoner says a lot of things which aren't true," Rossi claimed. "He says I signed with Ducati because I was forced to, I had no other choice, because I cannot get the same money because of Lorenzo [Rossi's former teammate at Fiat Yamaha]. He speaks about my shoulder like he was the best shoulder doctor in Melbourne Hospital. But he doesn't know nothing," Rossi said. The reason for this was simple, Rossi explained. "He [Stoner] never got over losing at Laguna Seca."

Out of interest, Rod, if Lorenzo runs Simo off the track sometime this year with an over-ambitious passing manouvre and walks to the Gresini pit to say sorry, do you think Marco would be justified if he met the apology with his own sharp comment or should he just accept the aplology?

Sharp comments are ok in my book and well chosen and appropriate (even abusive) words could have been used without degrading the guy's obvious talent. Not what I would have expected from Stoner. That being said, Stoner may well have been harbouring ill feeling over the Laguna Seca incident that influenced his comments.

My opinion is that Stoner remembers Rossi's ultimately hypocritical pre-season crticisms on national Italian tv which was the main fuel on the fire, which has since become a raging inferno. Hopefully both can be man enough to zip up the verbal and let their riding do the talking. Lorenzo's outburst appears pretty random. I can understand it if Simo just ran him off the track but Jorge just seems to be missing the attention I think.
Anyway, the warmups have been damp, hopefully the track is either dry or wet, not in between and we can see some cracking racing.

Well, that was the first Moto2 race I've seen for the year and - it seems nothing has changed since 2010! So many crashes by top contenders, it's a bit hard to believe though conditions did look slightly tricky. Bradl rode a masterful race really deserved the win, he's doing Helmut proud. Julian Simon also rode a smart race and his first race win must surely be just around the corner? And Yuki Takahashi, well, I don't think I can describe how pleased I am for him to get a poium on the back of his brothers tragic death - you did him proud Yuki. Then there was Crazy Joe, did such an awesome job picking his way through the pack, rode really smart only to make a small mistake with big consequences. Poor Scott Redding was a passenger in Marquez' mistake. I see the incident as similar to Josh Brookes taking out half the BSB field a couple of seasons ago where he lost control well before the corner and was just a random bowling ball.
Hope the weather stays stable for MotoGP.

Great ride by Pedrosa, about as calculated as I've ever seen.

Shame Simoncelli crashed, the racing itself would probably have been a bit more interesting.

Brilliant by Dani, I didn't know if he'd be able to have a go. Jorge is proving why he's world champ, a strong and smart ride indeed. Nice to see Casey on the box and whilst I though Simo's move was a bit rough, I don't want to hear about it. Dovi, perfect timing?!

Lorenzo rode an excellent race with consistent lap times. Late braking and the stability of his bike kept him ahead of Pedrosa who was hanging onto Lorenzo's tail like a haemorrhoid until he seized the opportunity and went for it. Gutsy and brilliant effort by Pedrosa.

Stoner......After almost being spat off in the first minute of the race when his rear tyre spun up, he then had Simoncelli achieve his unbroken run of crashes ahead of him and was then looking good and was regaining lost ground at intermittent intervals before his back appears to have been giving him problems. Looked as though his spine was out of whack after the race.

Dovisioso ......Did well to hang onto Rossi and pip him for fourth spot on the line.

Spies.........Felt sorry for the poor bugger........Mechanics left a tool in place on his fuel overflow or similar that apparently affected the operation of his front brake..

Looking forward to the return of the 1000cc bike next season and hear there are to be 21 bikes on the grid.

:)

Yeah, Lorenzo rode relatively without mistakes, Pedrosa and the repsol were at their best combination although he took it too late, perhaps he must wait for the correct timing to make the move. As soon as he can take the lead he pulled away from the group and created more gaps in every lap. He proved me wrong in any chance they both are in a head to head battle Lorenzo is usually stronger. Hope that Pedrosa can keep the pace.

Ben Spies, besides the technical error, being DNFs consecutively in opening races doesn't seem good. Does he ride under pressure? I reckon he is one of riders who was capable of handling pressures. Hope that he can fix the problem before long in the next couple of races. Carl Curtchlow on the other hand has been riding promisingly this far.

Spies had a tool attached to a pipe that compromised the brake lever. He got it off himself and then fluid leaked! Hardly his fault

Indeed, for some reason I just didn't expect a move like that from Dani, as opposed to if it were Valentino, for instance. Speaking of which, I would've liked to see Rossi and Dovisioso's battle at the flag before they cut away to Pedrosa crossing the finish line.

Perceptions abound that Dani can't pass and can only win from the front... go watch the 2006 season review and you will see some brilliant passes from him (apart from the attempt that took Nicky out :) )

Sorry Rod, but I don't buy the Rossi apology - he had the (almost) entire media contingent in tow and apologised with his helmet on. That seems to me a little like apologising to your mum with your back turned and your hoodie up! I've seen more sincere apologies coming from politicians (ooh, thats a bit low, even for me :p )

Nevertheless, it makes for entertaining viewing and gives the more overwrought Rossi fan-kiddies (on some other sites, not this one) a focus for their feeling of impotence this season.

Great ride by the Pedrosa kiddie, very Doohan-esque.

Don't apologize for having a differing view. Rossi probably left the skid-lid on in case he copped a knuckle sandwich.

Great ride by Pedrosa. No one would have thought he could do it. Not in front of Lorenzo, not at Estoril, not in front of Stoner, not after a surgery, not in a 1000 years.....but he did it..

My doubts of Dani passing Lorenzo were more of his current physical condition than ability to make a pass. I still think he has the most raw speed of anyone on the grid.
