After last years popping of my Bajan rally cherry, we are returning again in 2011! If you are still dithering over going then get your flights booked now it really is an amazing event!

The event website link is above. A great entry is already building with a great spread across the classes. The big banger category will see Paul Bird in his Focus going up against Bourne and Skeete again but two other Brits in WRC cars are already on the list namely Rob Swann in a Mel Evans run Impreza S12 and Roger Duckworth in his older Impreza. Theres a great variety as usual in the other classes and I guess we will see some further suprises as the event draws nearer.

Should be providing better updates this year as hopefully my lap top will work properly and so should get my images up as well on a daily basis.

Can almost taste that first dark and stormy already...

TWO ASTRAS FOR TEAM KICKASTRA/AUTOSCHARF IN SOL RALLY BARBADOS 2011

The Kickastra Rally team will field a two-car team jointly with Team Autoscharf in the largest motorsport event in the Caribbean - Sol Rally Barbados (http://www.rallybarbados.bb). The close relationship of the Barbados-based Kickastra Team and the German-based Team Autoscharf resulted in a combined team entry in Barbados' leading motorsport event in 2011 calendar.

Although yet to see action in 2011, the Barbados-based Kickastra Team's Vauxhall Astra GSi is undergoing final preparation for the prestigious event. Delays included late delivery of a refurbished engine, and then in the week leading up to the Shakedown stages rally an electrical fault blew components in the ECU effectively sidelining the team from the event. Quick action from the engine builder, the ECU supplier and the German-based Jonathan resulted in a stockpile of three ECU's and a solution to the electrical fault. Fingers are crossed (or thumbs are clasped down on fists as they do in Germany) that there will be no more setbacks and the team to be on the start line of the King of the Hill event slated for 29 May, 2011.

On the other side of the Atlantic, the German-based Team Autoscharf have been considering an entry in the event for over a year. The two teams have developed a very close relationship, with Team Autoscharf preparing and supporting the Kickastra team's German-based Opel Astra OPC. Team Autoscharf is lead by Lauter-based Opel and rally technical expert Tobias Scharf and he owns two Opel Astras, one German N3 championship winning Opel Astra similar to the Kickastra's, and one unique 2WD newer N4 Opel Astra OPC Turbo. His team driver is the very quick driver Berndt Knuepfer, and the Kickastra Team had "loaned" their German-based codriver Jonathan Linton for the Sol Rally Barbados to leverage his local knowledge and translation support.

Both cars now lie side by side in the Kickastra team workshop in Barbados awaiting final setup and preparation for the event. Tobias and his family as well as Berndt and his family will arrive in Barbados on 23 May and will combine rallying with some relaxation, by soaking up the world-renowed sun, attractions and beaches. This is indeed the first event outside of Germany for the Autoscharf Team, despite supporting the Kickastra Rally Team in their WRC adventures.

The only damper on the high spirits and expectations for the event was the unfortunate crash of the Team Autoscharf's older Opel Astra OPC in the Rallye Sachsen on May 12-14. With a close to 10-year track record of multiple class wins without a major accident, as can happen in the sport, Berndt Knuepfer struck a rock with a wheel in a slow corner, causing the team's Opel Astra to roll and causing major damage. The team is hoping to put this setback behind and focus on some fun and rallying in the sun in Barbados.

Regular updates prior to, during and after the event will be posted on the team's newly relaunched and updated website www.kickastra.com (http://www.kickastra.com), and the team has facilitated coverage by German-based motorsport reporter Anna Neef to gain useful mileage of Chris Meeke's claim of "the best rally in the world".

Wow! This time last week I was stood out in a canefield in 90 degree heat taking pictures of cars competing in the 2011 Sol Rally Barbados and a week later I can barely see out of my office window back in Blighty due to torrential rain! The memories however will again just as last year fill me with warmth for months to come.

The week kicked off on Saturday the 28th May with scrutineering at Simpsons St Michael. A large number of fans were there to see the cars and drivers and were entertained with a big screen showing last years event and Robin Bradford's usual probing interviews with the key players. A number of the merchandise stalls had a great idea in raffling prizes to purchasers which created it's own buzz especially on the Sol stand! Met up with a few UK visitors but had to make an earlier than planned departure due to my worsening sunburn which later had to be treated by the excellent medical centre in Holetown but thats a totally seperate story!

The next day was King of the Hill a pre event shakedown which is used to set the running order for the main rally on the following weekend. I now see the WRC is going to use it's own shakedowns to decide the running order so IMO I was correct in my suggestion on the rallyfm.net "fireside chat" that the WRC can learn from Barbados!! Anyway Roger Skeete in his Impreza S12 was visibly on the money and won the event, an ominous warning to the other crews about his intentions for the rally itself.

A weeks interlude interspersed with several parties and plenty of time to explore the sights and sample the local fare took us up to the main event. The rally this year was two loops of stages on each day, 3 venues on day 1 and 2 on day 2 with the Bushy Park Superspecial on day 2. For the snapper or general spectator this allows plenty of time to move around to different spots and also to take advantage of the lunch halts to take a quick cooling dip in the sea, perfect! However wherever you go as we again experienced this year the local fans just add that magic ingredient which is in equal measure enthusiasm, knowledge and sheer joy that the event is happening right in front of them and you cant help getting wrapped up in it. The Greenlight film crew I met at The Rock had been bowled over by the sheer buzz surrounding this rally and were loving every minute of the event. It was a long hot day which this year had night stages so a few Dark & Stormy's were in order at the close of play!

Day 2 was much the same format and weather wise however as often happens in Barbados the Malvern stage was affected by rain mid way through causing some big issues for several crews as the wet stated in the braking zone after a big straight. We decided to base ourselves on the Kendal stage this year for the five runs and some mighty action (too much to mention) was witnessed in the brilliant sunshine. A late plan hatched to get to Bushy for the SS however our hire Suzuki got bogged down and we had to be helped out by some friendly locals which put the mockers on that. However a local called Pedro and his family kindly offered us some consalation and local hospitality by plying us with his secret recipe Rum punch and we chatted about rallying and the island in general until the course closer ran through the stage. This in retrospect was a fitting finale to the rally for us and summed up how totally addictive the event becomes and how friendly and welcoming the people of this fantastic island generally are!

In summary the event was won for the 12th time by Roger Skeete however Paul Bird and Paul Bourne tried thier best to take the battle to him. The Brits did pretty well and hopefully next year will see an even bigger entry form this side of the pond. From my perspective the event again lived up to it's promise. Yes it was hot to be standing out in and you need to be prepared with fluids etc however if you plan it right I can promise you an experience that you are unlikley to match anywhere else in the world. Put it in the diary for 2012 you wont regret it!

A few thanks I need to add before I sign off. Robin and Trisha Bradford for your hospitality and I hope Trisha makes a full recovery soon. Russell and Marion and all the staff at The Sandpiper for the usual faultless stay. Morf for not editing out all my ramblings. The various local crews and event officials we talked to over the event including the Irish Bajan Nigel Reece and finally the rally fans of Barbados without whom this event wouldnt quite be the same.

Roll on 2012!
