I am using Richard Burns Rally and I am a dyslexic.

Today my wife asked me to turn off visual aid and see how much trouble it would cause me. Well it did.. especailly on blind corner (over crest) and on intersection.

On both on of those the few tenth of second it takes me to process Right to Left cause many accidents...

I was wondering if anyone actualy racing is having trouble because of that.

Does anyone know if any driver is actualy having trouble because of that afflication ?

I'm quite badly dyslexic and struggeld with left and right quite badly when i started rallying.....we got rould this by using myside and yourside whenever the corner or junction was not obvious.

On one jersey rally i kept trying to turn the wrong way at the same corner and i'd have gone in to the guys shed!...on the 4th run through the stage all the spectators were ready for me and were waving the right direction to me!

I also do a bit of navigating and sorting the times out can be really hard for me too.

It sis very surprising just how many dsylexic people work in motorsport, especially at profesional level.

Good to know that it's not something that holds people back from the sport.

I experiment a bit more with it. I had been a while since I play that game so i don't have good recolection of the stages.

I did a whole rally (GB so only about 30 km) with visual aids. Not driving to the limit, basicaly making sure that I will see the end of every stage, and trying 1st with visual aid and then withouth.

The second time around (only sounds) i was about 1 sec slower per km.

You mean she mistakenly plunges in the left ditch instead of the right one ?

I think Jackie Steward is dyslexia. Not done too badly!

Yes, he's severely dyslexic. Dyslexic people tend to develop strategies to minimise the effects of dyslexia in their everyday life. They can be very resourceful and ingenious people.

its also a variable thing, many are called dyslexic that in reality have very little to overcome, others like Jackie are much worse, I know a lad who is never affected except for exam time when he gets more time thanks to his 'aflection'.........

i only found out i was dyslexic when i was 21, in a way i'm glad i never knew as a kid as i may have used it as an excuse for doing badly.

But i'd have prefered that to being called lazy and lacking effort!

But when i found out i was dyslexic i got some help in a few important areas that have really improved.

Whilst on the topic, how do they test for dyslexia?

I navigated for a couple of guys who would quite often set the car up to go the wrong way at intersections. I got around it by saying 'other left' or other right' when I felt the car being setup the wrong way for the corner. They got a bit worried because usually when I said it, my head was down.

you go through a series of tests involving reading writing and visual skills. This like reading articles and then being asked questions on it, writing a paragraph of you own choice, reading speed tests, visual tests on remebering items on cards to test short term memory. Basic numeric tests. Co-ordiation tests. telling the time of an anologue clock! and many other things i've forgotten about!

The last test I had took two hours and at then end i felt pretty stupid at how bad i was at some of the tasks!

These are interesting. What country are these tests done in? I am a teacher in New Zealand and we have no specific tests for it, as it is very difficult to determine whether the child has dyslexia or another learning difficulty.

Dyslexia is most common in males, just as a point of interest ;)

So is Paul Stewart, to whom the same applies.
