For some reason, or just a coincidence, the smartest states tend to be in north and the dumbest ones in south. The only noticeable exception was Alaska, which is in the north. But it's not a surprise, since they have Sarah Palin.

Although I'm sure we're helped by the great schools in the central and northern part of the state, I'm happy that my state placed quite high in this study (#10).

That's an interesting list though. I was a bit surprised at where some states ranked... others not so much. I knew that Alaska had very high teen pregnancy, high school dropout, alcoholism and drug abuse rates. So it didn't surprise me that it ranked so low. And not to pick on Silly Sarah from Wasilla any more than I do (yeah, right! :D ), but if you think about it, she and her family are indicative of those social ills. Her daughter had a baby out of wedlock as a teen and both she and her "baby daddy" are high school dropouts (though one or both now have their GED's, I think). Levi's mother was/is a meth addict. Levi is an admitted pothead. Sarah spent as much time pursuing a bachelors degree at a series of diploma mills as most people spend getting a bachelors and a masters degree. And as governor (and a VP candidate), she apparently hadn't bothered to learn much about the world outside of her state. So no, that doesn't seem to be a state that highly values education or broader knowledge... and it also has a LOT of social problems. But financially, Alaska is in VERY good shape. So one has to wonder why they haven't been more successful in addressing these issues. Fat, dumb & happy?

I'm guessing there are some other strong correlations and common threads among the highly rated, as well as the lower rated states. But I'd say any state that has a lot of illegal immigrants (Nevada, Arizona, California), high rates of alcoholism and drug abuse and high teen pregnancy rates is going to rank at or near the bottom of such a study.

I was a bit surprised by Nevada. Maybe they have included all the tourists visiting casinos and wanting to be wedded by Elvis.

They should do the same study over here. I wonder which province would win. ;)

Using these two factors below to somehow relate to which states are the smartest, makes the who thing a liberal scam.

1- Public Elementary and Secondary School Revenue per $1,000 Personal Income (Table 56)
11- Average Teacher Salary as a Percent of Average Annual Pay of All Workers (Table 364) +
--------------------

Hmm, where was the former speaker of the House from, California?
They are a proud number 47, even with all those liberals there spending other peoples money, makes the Palin analogy rather obtuse.

Minnesota- gee has become one of the most liberal , and THE best welfare state in the seven state region, (we now have large population of peoples whose last known address was Chicago, plus we are also the leading importer of Somali welfare cases, ) not that the ranking means squat, but dropping seven places means it serves the state well.

In common with its Scandanavian neighbours Finland is very tolerant of homosexuality and has progressive laws protecting the rights of gays and lesbians. Finland is not a populous nation so the gay scene is not large. However, gay and lesbian visitors are assured of a warm welcome from this gay friendly country.

Actully Eki having lived in Las Vegas I can tell you the real problem is a disproportionate amount of teen alcoholism.

I know it has got to be a crisis for Bobby that countries were lining up to get behind "Liberal Dems" to take a little plane flight to join in on a Barbeque over yonder, and put a boot up Daffies @$$ without even being asked. He still thinks Obama is waging war on his own Homeland.

I bet he has proof too! Rush Limbaugh knows the truth.

Somehow I get the Feeling that awhile back an American banged Eki's mom and then split. 9 months later she squeezed out Eki.

Maybe you should talk to your doctor about that feeling, so he can adjust your medication.

Gee thanks Tony, we really needed that.

As someone who has been to 46 states, I am going to say the people that impressed me the most by their intelligence (I saw lots of blue collar guys who were on the docks) were in North Carolina. Not sure where it sat, never looked, but the people of the state of North Carolina, no matter where I went were friendly and obviously smart and well spoken. Ditto for Virginia.

Both "red states" with Blue moments.....

Dumbest state I was in? OH god, California for sure....and the people of New York don't strike me as too smart.

Massachusetts? Smart people live there, I hear, but I never felt I was dealing ever with people who were too worldly.

Nicest people? North Carolina, and Wisconsin.

There...been everywhere man...talked to enough people, this was all just my opinion...don't shoot me...I like Americans, but YALL don't seem to get us Canadians AT All...lol
