I'm after any info on a ford rally car built at Boreham and raced by Julian Raymond/Guy Hodgson from 1980 ish on, reg was NHK244V.
As i say built at Boreham as a test bed and a possable replacement for the discontinued Mk2 escort, never did that well and was used as a marshal transport and recce car till being sold in 1987, unfortunatly thats all i know so any help would be great :D .
cheers :)

Car was driven by Richard Illife on mainly Esso BTRDA rounds after Raymond had it but was also owned by a guy who did single venues in the Sth Yorks/Lincs area. Will dig out some photos at some point.

The info i have is that Richard lliffe sold the car in 87 to a Chris Auker who raced it on the quip?, crashing it and then rebuilding it to use on fulbeck airfeild before selling it to somone from the Navy based in Portsmouth, it's been untaxed sine Dec 88 and the limit of what i know except a few mentions in books and 3 pics :)

Either CCC or Rallysport did an article (end 1980? - probably early 81) interviewing Julian Raymond and Simon Everett. It will have mentioned this car.

Who used to rally a Ford Consul (Mk3 Cortina?) It was orange and I think they were Irish. I only used to compete against them at Goodwood in the 1990's.

I think the car was historic spec, if that was possible.

Hi Bortaf,

The car ws used on the Rally of Cornwall (now called the Tour of Cornwall) back in March of 1987 by Lewis Hoyland. It ws badged as a "Cortina XR6" it finished 10th overall, I think he did a few events with it during 1987/88.

I have the event on video, I watch it try to get it onto a DVD for you if I can

Hope this helps.

It's not clear what car you mean. The "Consul" name appeared in the early fifties for the bottom of the range models in the Consul/Zephyr/Zodiac range. By the early sixties it was separated from the Zephyr & Zodiac and early versions of the Mk1 Cortina, Corsair, Classic & Capri (fastback Classic not the late sixties model) were called Consul Cortina, Consul Corsair, Consul Classic & Consul Capri. By the mid sixties the Consul name had disappeared. The Mk3 Cortina appeared in the early seventies & was never, to my knowledge associated with the Consul name. The Consul name was re-introduced around this time as the base model in the Consul/Granada range. A 3 litre V6 Consul GT was homologated, for racing I believe. One notable example was rallied by Kevin Videan/Peter Rushforth on the 1977 RAC rally. It was an ex-police car with the orange 'jam butty' stripe covered in event sponsors stickers and still had the police two-tone horns fitted - great for clearing spectators on the stages.

That would be absolutly great :D
i will of couse cover any expence :)

I just got a copy of the FIA papers for the Cortina/Taunus with an amendment for the XR6 packedge (only made in 4 door), this mainly coverd the german "works" car KLM 124 which was a SA spec shell NHK was a UK spec shell.
Apparently the XR6 packedge was only for group one the rest of the papers are for groups 1 to 5 (if i'm making no sense here it's cos i have no idea what i'm talking about just passing on what i've learnt :s mokin: )
I assume KLM was only in group 1 and NHK (which used a group 5 axle) was leagal in all groups?

Feel free to set me straight if i'm making no sence i really don't know the ins and outs of the rally scene i'm affraid :)

Still looking out my photos for you, however if you can find a copy of World Rallying 4 then page 125 is dedicated to this car with pics of two engine set ups and the UK and German cars with text.

I think you'll find it's the other way round. To run in Group 1 you're only allowed the bits listed in the Gp 1 homologation papers.

Group 1 was for series production touring cars, I can't remember what the minimum production quantity was, but there was some allowance for model variations. Group 2 was for modified or limited production touring cars. As an example the Mk1 Escort 1600GT (Mexico) was homologated in Gp1 and formed the basis of the RS1600 which was homologated in Gp2. Groups 3 & 4 were the equivalent groups for Grand Touring cars. When permitted by the event some modified Gp2 cars ran in Gp4 as the manufacturing quantities were lower. Group 5 was for sports cars, but was also used for highly modified touring & GT cars in long distance racing.

Think thats what i ment
the XR6 package (KLM) was only homologated in group 1 the rest of the origional homologation papers are for groups 1 to 5 (NHK which wasn't an XR6)
I know it seems strange researching a rally car and knowing nowt about rallying but in cortina circles they are the holy grail, the only racing pedegree the Mk5 has :D

One of the reasons the UK project went no further would have been that the new Appendix J for International events was coming in wef 1.1.82. and both Gp N and A then required 5000 per annum production, the figure for the old superseeded Gp1. There was no new equivalent to the old 1000 Gp 2. The 200 qty for Gp B was the only new homologation the UK car would have a hope in hell of ever meeting.
As an aside to the post above, the RS1600 came before the Mexico, not after it. Ford got the RS1600 homologated at 1601cc to allow it to be rebored up to the 2000cc class limit. When they later tried to get the Mexico homologated at 1598cc, the FIA pointed out it was the same block so must be 1601cc too! That screwed the Mexico's International prospects in Gp1 (where it soon would have acquired an RS2000-type twin carb homologation option no doubt). Instead the Avenger GT dominated Gp1 1600cc...

Hi, Lewis Hoyland was in the Royal Navy Air Sea Rescue ( helicopter pilot ) and was stationed at RNAS Culdrose. He was originally from Goldthorpe in South Yorkshire and drove the chase car on my entry in the Lombard RAC Rally 1981. He built a Mini 1275Gt and used it on some night events and I navigated on one of these - The 'Stowaway Shovel Rally' 1981 in Derbyshire.
When he bought the Cortina he took me out for a run in it - terrific power!
I lost touch with him after that but his service crew were from Goldthorpe and Wakefield.
I last spoke to him by telephone in the late 90's and he was living somewhere in the home counties but I have since lost his details.
