I guess the old thread has been closed due to 145 pages of replies. Here is a follow-on thread.
Over the past few days, I've been listening a lot to three albums: London Conversation (John Martyn), Astral Weeks (Van Morrison) and Closing Time (Tom Waits). From Closing Time, I'm listening to the song "Little Trip to Heaven". That whole album is amazing.

Today, it's got to be the "Dave Munnelly Band". They're probably a little less mainstream than the usual crowd but they play hardcore traditional music nonetheless. Of all time, two bands stick out. Stunning musicians indeed.
I really like Focus for the music itself, and because it was a landmark album for the genre of progressive death metal. With that album, Cynic (along with Death and Atheist) has been a great influence on death metal/progressive metal acts in the 90s and today like Opeth, Meshuggah, Between The Buried And Me, Behold... The Artcopus, etc.

Oh no doubt about it and Focus is an excellent album, but I still say TiA is a better album, the 15 years between releases really saw the compositional abilities of Masvidal, Malone and Reinhert grow quite a bit.
