Shakedown at Ruuhimäki!

Talks of dramatical changes to the route weren't just talks this time. Friday is pretty much completely new day for the modern Rally Finland. Of course some of the stages has been used before, but that's like in the mid 80s. This will mean serious recceing for a spectator like me. Shakedown at Ruuhimäki - had a dream about that last year. It'll be crowded at the j***s. Long liasons for Friday as well if started at Hassi stage. First car at 9.00?! Had Loeb got his wishes through at last? Saturday is all on the well-known 2000s stages, sadly and as only one negative thing about the schedule Himos stage won't be driven. I've always liked that one.

If there'll be some frustration addressed from the city of Jyväskylä, I can understand that. They get practically zero action on Friday (no service, closest stage 60 kms south). But hey - these changes are warmly welcomed.

I´m so excited!!! :hot:

This is really something!

My only confusing is Ruhimäki starting 400m from gocart track and also ending nearby. Don´t get the road there.

Not sure about Ruuhimäki stage, but I think/hope it's about the same as the format used for PSD shootout in 2009. Anyone with better info?

Yep sounds like the shakedown will be the stage used in Pirelli Shootout. From Go-kart track its about 300-400m to the "normal" Ruuhimäki stage, the junction is at the corner where Rovanperä rolled 307 few years ago. And the regular stage finish is that 400meters away from the track, there's lots of small roads at that area.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=fi&geocode=&q=Lievestuore,+Laukaa,+Suomi&aq=0&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=66.02731,101.513672&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Laukaa,+Lievestuore,+Suomi&ll=62.232895,26.155014&spn=0.009697,0.024784&z=16

About in the center of that is the go-kart track, it doesn't have exact address.

With satellite view you can see the track which will be the service area for shakedown:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Tuntematon+tie&daddr=Ruuhim%C3%A4entie+to:Tuntematon+tie+to:Tunte maton+tie&geocode=FWyYtQMdUS6PAQ%3BFZK5tQMd0tmOAQ%3BFce9tQMd mOyOAQ%3BFcuptQMdFwyPAQ&hl=fi&mra=dme&mrsp=3&sz=15&sll=62.235594,26.157203&sspn=0.019392,0.049567&ie=UTF8&t=f&z=15&ecpose=62.235594,26.157203,2351.93,-6.28,0,0

And the route could be something like that.

This is awesome. :D

There's really massive amounts of spectator recce to do. Well, I definately don't complain, the route seems magnificient.

This might be the second year in my NORF history (1993-2010) which recquires overnight camping in the forest. Usually it's been possible and made sense to return to home after every day (exl. 2009 Sunday when I went to Myhinpää on Saturday night and slept there due to the long distance). Now because of the long distances it's really not worth driving back and forth. Just wondering how many cars will be needed to transport ~6 people, equipment and all the food etc. Time to start thinking about a minivan/camper van... :)

Okay, July, come here. Now. :D

Why would you need to do so? You mean for Friday to Saturday night? Friday will be long in all aspects, but so what, it's only once a year. If I consider camping for this event, it must be for Ruuhimäki jumps at shakedown...

Good point. Actually when taking a closer look at the maps, I think my initial idea wasn't the best one. Because on Saturday the stages move up north and we ofcourse follow. So you're right.

For some reason my father isn't very enthusiastic about the southern stages. He says that there's been security problems in Lahti area in the past. But hasn't Historic Rally been totally okay and with no problems with fights etc? I guess he's just getting old. :D

There is a camping that is about 7,5 km away from the junction to Ruuhimäentie. The camping is not any fancy one. There are two kinds of cottages but the smaller ones reminded more of a shed than a cottage. All the toilets and showers are in a separate building.

Fair comment, he reminds me a little bit of Latvala when he first started off, all speed, no consistency. PG definetly shouldn't quit, if he was to "mature" as a driver, I think we could see great things from him.

The thing is PG didnt ever had so much chance to drive and test as Mr Latval ever did. Believe me!

I´ve been helping JML to recover his front in NORF when he´d crashed his Toyota some years ago and know very well how many chances he´s got compared to PG.

So let´s give PG a fair chance even if it´s not gonna be a much test drivin as JML and we´ll see a driver who is well at the level as the fastest in WRC. You should know that before you give your comments. Give PG a break and let´s see.

Diddn't mean that comment to be offensive :)
And to be fair, its not as if JML has never had a accident or two in testing :p As long as he keeps it to the testing and not in the actual rallies! :)

Is wildcard decided on who's leading the FRC at the moment? So had Lindroos not overshoot the first junction at Lapua he would've had it....? I hope he'll get an entry to NORF, propably will.

One office day hours left for entries to NORF. On Monday morning it's 93 entries, with 15 WRC and 13 S2000s/R4s so far. Nikara is in with his Evo IX. No surprises yet, but I guess we know during the day. Some names that are still missing: Räikkönen, Henning, PGA (?), Ketomaa, Rantanen, Lindroos, VW/Skoda team, Sandell (?), ...

Brynildssen is in - was he supposed to do Finland in the first place or had his plans changed?

There was nothing about it in regulations and I realy hope that they don't have to eliminate any entries. Lahti Historic is one problem but biggest one is that hotel construction site in service park. SP is very much smaller than last year...

I looked through regs as well. Nothing. But this year the repeated stages aren't so close to each other as they were last year, so perhaps even with Lahti Historic they are able to take all the entered crews in.

Of course S2000 victory will be decided between Ott and Juho, but I'll hope Joonas will be able to show some of the potential he holds. Last year he made old N4 scratch times, perhaps a few top times this year also. It's his first race in S2000 so it's unrealistic to expect a stronghold over experienced drivers like Juho.

Ott and Juho's battle will be huge - it'll decide the difference of machinery on gravel.

Don't think the WRC list is that amazing but the 2 works Minis and Ketomaa should be interesting. Really one of the Ford boys ought to be able to win this one, they were good in previous years and the Fiesta is surely better than the Focus. I think Ketomaa will do more than a few good times but the question is whether he can finish the event without problems or errors.

S2000 should be interesting. Hanninen is at home but the Ford has seemed quicker on gravel recently. I thought Gardemeister would drive here?

I really rate Tanak, but I think Hanninen in Finland is a stronger driver. I'd say Tanak and Mikkelsen will fight for 2nd, and maybe Nasser and Lindroos will battle near the top if anyone hits trouble. Whatever happens I can't wait for it - the Minis back, Ketomaa in a WRC car and Ford + Ogier needing to win...should be good.

R-Kioski's that Juha_Koo mentioned are everywhere. Search for one closest to your route from R-Kioski (http://www.r-kioski.fi/) -> top right "kioskihaku", add name of the city or postal code. I'm not an expert on these prepaid deals cause I've never had need for them but I bet there are other brands and other locations to buy them as well.

Not a bad after all! Seven Finnish drivers behind the wheel of the World Rally Car. Just like old days :-)

Jari Ketomaa has to be close to top five and win some stages. Surely he will push like hell. Also interesting to see Mini´s speed and compare Matti Rantanen to Meeke and Sordo.

With the help of Volkswagen Motorsport Joonas Lindroos has once in a lifetime chance to show his potential. If he is able to be close to Hänninen and Mikkelsen there might be future, but not an easy situation, because they have so much more experience of the Fabia...

Also will be interesting battle in the PCWRC between former Pirelli Star drivers Jarkko Nikara and Hayden Paddon. Flodin will be the next one...

There is a Red Bull Motorshow with Loeb and Räikkönen.

Red Bull Show Run - Maailman parhaat rallikuskit Helsingissä! (http://www.nesteoilrallyfinland.fi/30326.aspx)

And if you are into metal music, the weekend before rally there is Tuska Open Air metal festival in Helsinki w/ Morbid Angel, At The Gates, Devin Townsend, Katatonia, etc.

TUSKA OPEN AIR METAL FESTIVAL - Uutiset (http://www.tuska-festival.fi/)

I was thinking about the same about Lindroos priority status by the wildcard entry. Also PGA and Mikkelsen are P2, right - or at least were.

It is a bit late, you're right.

Have you tried this booking service, linked from the official site:

There is going to be driving... But it's all drivable, my dad has done all his NORF-trips from Mänttä since the 1960s and also me, starting from 1994. :) Two last years SS' Kavala (Kolonkulma) and Väärinmaja were just about 20 km away, this year stages are "bit" further. Driving, negotiating the traffic jams and using small roads to bypass them, it's all part of the game! ;)

Mänttä is okeyish. Not that far from Saturday stages, and Friday stages are going to be long drive from anywhere near traditional Jyväskylä base.

Then I found rally-maps (http://www.rally-maps.com/home) on a Finnish forum. Now it’s much easier :) but pity that not all roads has street view :( .

Did you learn anything worth sharing? Me and my friend has been using Rally-maps as well, looks good, but makes me wonder where they've gotten such detailed information and thus is it exact.

Of the new stages I'd say Hyvänneula will be the fastest stage of the rally (and season), looks like wide and hard gravel mostly. If they have average speed of over 130 km/h in Myhinpää rollercoaster, this should top that.

So far I’ve choosed few spots with fields around and long view. In our gang is alsoa guy that can’t walk so far so the spots has to be choosen with that in mind. We’re probably moving around with a camper (top speed about 110 km/h, 65 hp and after a year it can be registered as a museum vehicle :D ) so parking is also one issue.

Thursday: No plans so far.
Friday: Hyväneula 1 (SS6; 11:53) & 2 (SS9; 16:20) and Mynnilä (SS11; 19:46)
Saturday: Leustu 1 (SS12; 7:58) & 2 (SS17; 13:55) or Surkee 1 (SS13;9:00) & 2 (SS18; 14:57), the rest of the day is not planned.

This rally radio's video starts from that junction at 1,1 km. Spectators on the left field, you'll see some safe action. After that part there are many interesting places, jumps (that video around 58"), farms, trees and stones lined up, but the questions are entrance and view - the beginning of the Evo stage is very green and at parts it reminds of those Central European roads with trees arching above. After the junction 2,2 km starts a faster section but from spectator view with mentioned problems. Take a look at the video at 4'19".

About the places OldF mentioned, I could add in SS Mynnilä perhaps a similar place with long view with entrance at around 8,8 km, then walking towards the start.

This year we are perhaps happy with only 3 stages a day. It could be 4 SS on Saturday, depends on traffic. It also depends on the places we spot, how they work and also how's the competition. It'd also be nice to see the historics properly at some stage, though for us it's world rallying first of course. Any timetable for Lahti Historic yet?

Only three of the stages are exactly the same as in 2010. Friday is completely new and some stages on Saturday are modified.

Loeki, when you arrive to Finland, find the nearest newstand and buy the blue-covered VM Katsojaopas (Spectator Guide, €10, released July 15th). It'll have maps detailed enough to find the stages properly. Everyone should buy it anyway. Welcome!

But he tested for two days. Last year it was one day for Loeb and three for Ogier.

I still believe Latvala and Hirvonen must give their absolute best to keep that Ogier guy behind. Only three weeks from now and it's already end of day 2...

But he tested for two days. Last year it was one day for Loeb and three for Ogier.

Yeah, true.

I have to see Ford's speed before I build my scenarios. But for now I also believe that Ford might be actually bit weaker. Maybe. One scenario which I've been thinking of, is that Ogier leads by a very narrow margin after day two and is all happy and bit spiky towards Loeb, who could be somewhere around 4th behind Fords. On day three, Loeb presents unimaginable attack - wins NORF and asks Ogier: "Who's your daddy now? :ninja: "

Rallyper
8th July 2011, 21:35
Noope. Hirvonen and JML will keep up a very fast speed on first day which will get Loeb and Ogier very confused. They will chase each other off the road and it will be the second one/two for Ford in NORF this year.

Last year Ogier were 11,7s faster on the second day than Latvala. With Rally Finlad, aftr Grönholm retired, it's all about going flat out from the word go. Ogier was 10s behind Latvala on the 1st service and that was their difference on the finnish. It'shardto catch up. Of course I'm hoping for JML's victory number 2, but I wouldn't be surprised if one of the Sebs nails it. In that case all I need is good rally from spectator's point of view, and I've done my homework.

Also, it have been mentioned, especially Ketomaa and also Rantanen can be some kind of wildcards here, depending on lots of things. I don't believe they fight for victory, but Östberg/Sweden case can be repeated if everything goes right. And that's victory for rallying - the sport we love.

8th July 2011, 21:51
without problems i think the chance of Loeb/Ogier beating the fords is minimal... It would be stupid for them to take risks and chase them....they will just wait for something unexpected as last year. Ogier since he has nothing to lose might attack but i think he doesn't have the mentality or the experience to chase the finns in their back yard. I think Quesnel will just giv the order for a rsik fre run from the go, he is a smart man.

They have 3 tarmac rounds ahead to play cat and mouse with the ford kids.

The rally i think will be much more interesting to see the battle between the privateers rather than the top.

I have to dissagree with NOT, Loeb has always gone for the win here as long he has had any chances, exception is last year but I belive that had more to do with the tragedy in his family that happend during first day of the rally.
Its also good to remember that the win of 1000 Lakes is the most respected among drivers, ok he has a win here but if this is his last year in the sport im sure he will go for a second win.

Loeb has no need to ridicule the finnish...he did it a few years back with tougher competition. This year ogier proved that he has the speed to deal with loeb in a straight fight so i think Loeb will go for the safe points instead of risking everything. Ogier on the other hand cannot afford to back down but he does not have the experience or the speed to win in finland in a 3 day war.

Sure they are going to try and be fast but i doubt they will take any risks so i predict a 1 and a half day semi-fight maximum....once the difference reeaches 15-20 seconds all is lost and they just have to see if ketomaa is close or not....

When Loeb won in Finland in 2008 the only competition he had was Hirvonen and back then Hirvonen didn't have yet the knowhow to win Finland. Next year the roles changed, and now there's Latvala and Ogier added for the victory battle as well. I'm repeating myself, but I think both works Citroens have the speed to win, but they - or at least Loeb - has the option to play it safe also. There's still no cruising to victory in Finland.

Thanks Tomi for the answer.

New version of Entrylist (updated monday 12.7), both VW Motorsport Skoda´s are P2 now and will start before Hänninen and rest of SWRC drivers
Lindroos gave his SWRC guestpass away because in SWRC you can only test 1 day and that is alltogether testday. His VW deal has many testdays, outside and inside Finland.

Hi!

Sorry if this question has already posted.
I'm going to Rally Finland.
I want to see a jumping spot because I went Rally Finland last year too but missed it.
Please tell me where I can watch it.

And is there an information of car parking place in the spectator guide book?
Can I get it in Helsinki? I want to make a plan before arriving Jyvaskyla.

Hi Tigerlily, when you come here buy the VM rally magazine, it's easy to find in Helsinki, and from that you can find how to get to the stages, and there is also descriptions of the stages, where is jump and so on, but if you go to some famous spot go in good time because there will be a lot of people.

Kiitos Tomi!!

OK I'll buy VM rally magazine in Helsinki.
Can't wait to go there!
Last year I went by escort tour and this year I'll drive a rental car to go to places where I want to go.
Yeah there must be a lot of people. I need to go there quite early.

Looking forward to see:

1. Hirvonen vs the top 4

2. Ketomaa vs Rantanen

3. Both Mini drivers vs Ketomaa and Rantanen

4. Hänninen vs Tänak

5. Salo (Mitsu R4) vs PG Andersson (Impreza R4)

6. R4 vs S2000

7. Novikov, Östberg & Tuohino compared to Ketomaa and Rantanen

8. Lindroos vs Mikkelsen

Only thing missing is a fast 207 driver.

I think this will be an amazing rally. I'm looking forward to seeing how Hayden Paddon goes, Finland is tough for him. So specialized.

I think Ogier is a big big chance, between him and JML

Already after last year´s Rally Finland I thought that Ogier will win next time around, and I´m not gonna change that bet now either. At least Ogier and the Fords will drive on the very edge where everything could happen. And some say the new stages on Friday will benefit the Finns, I´d thought those stages would give the French more equal chance of competing, since none of the top guys know those stages like their own pockets (apart from Ketomaa maybe).

i think Loeb will win. JML+Ogier will probably fight very hard which might results in big offs
which means that Loeb will be there and snatch the win.

JML will break the car and Ogier to put it on it's roof again? Lol. Either way it's going to be an awesome rally. Mini will be there as well, hope Meeke gets plenty of miles

Speaking for Mini: it is a question, who of both drrivers will have a green light to attack on 110% and who will have a mission to finish the rally&collect the miles....But realistically I dont't expect any of Mini to be a threat to SebI&2&JML&Mikko&Peter....yet !

Mikko and JML will take the pace and keep it to the end. I think Mads Östberg will finish a top five. Maybe even higher. Even Iceman will make a good rally this year. I think Ogier and Loeb have a lot up to defend their situation in the team and both will fail trying to catch up behind the two Fords of Mikko and JML.

i usually dream of blue oil fields and giraffes with 9 legs....but ok.

Loeb and Ogier will drive fast for 4-5 stages see they cannot win without huge risks and will back down keeping an eye to ketomaa. then let Wilson decide who wants to win hirvonen or Latvala.

what is the weather going to be like ? i see that in tests we had rain....

Miika
19th July 2011, 17:27
Here the rest of this week will be warm and rainy, in the rain the temperature will be +20 C and when the sun is shining the temperature is up to +30 C, and even at night it is as high as +20. So very unusual summer weather for this place this week. And next week, it can be anything I guess, too early to call.
