1988 was a good year for me. I graduated high school, spent some time doing some racing of my own, and spent alot of time watching some really good racing. Bill Elliott won his only Winston Cup that year by just 24 points over Rusty Wallace. Both Bill and Rustoleum won 6 races each, Rusty led the series in top 5's with 19, and Top 10's with 23. Bill had an outstanding average finish of 6.6, and Rusty's was 7.1.

The real standings can be found here:

Now, on to the FIA Cup:

001 Rusty Wallace..........359
002 Bill Elliott...........308
003 Dale Earnhardt.........236
004 Davey Allison..........201
005 Terry Labonte..........185
006 Geoff Bodine...........172
007 Darrell Waltrip........169
008 Phil Parsons...........135
009 Ricky Rudd.............124
010 Ken Schrader...........121
-----------------------------
011 Alan Kulwicki..........120
012 Sterling Marlin........104
013 Lake Speed.............077
014 Mark Martin............074
015 Neil Bonnett...........070

33 drivers scored at least 1 point this year and 12 drivers scored at least 100 points. For the 4th time since 1975 we have a split championship. Rusty Wallace beats Bill Elliott here by 51 points, or more than 2 races which is weird considering how close the Winston Cup points were. Rusty podiumed 6 of the last 7 including winning 4 of the last 5 races (he did finish "only" p5 at Phoenix). Rusty's ppr was 12.4, and the groups was 5.7. The groups avg number of starts was 28.9 (Neil Bonnett missed 2 races) and the avg start was 12.3. The avg finish was 13.9. 28 of the 29 race wins came in the top 15 (Bobby Allison scored that memorable Daytona 500 win over his son Davey. Reliabilty improved, with RAF up a full race to 22.9 of 30 (79.45%) and DNF's dropped to 5.9. The group finished on the lead lap 39.23% of the time, the last time it would be below 40%.

The 1988 Bud Pole Award winner is Bill Elliott with 6.

Congrats to Bill Elliott, the 1988 Winston Cup Champion
Congrats to Rusty Wallace, the 1988 FIA Cup Champion

Are these results, and those that follow, calculated using the FIA/F1 system which was in place in the year in question, or are they all done using the 2010 scoring system?

They were all done with the 2010 FIA Points system.
