Looking over the rankings, I remember a lot of people saying that the Lotus Renault group were too cheap given how strong they are.
I don't see those teams high up in the standings.

Yeah, but you have to watch out for Stasio i Jasio GP as they are in the top ten without using their bonus.
This year is the exact opposite of last year.
Last year in order to stay in the top ten a team needed a good driver AND a good-to-great chassis/engine package.
This year all of the top ten teams have a great chassis/engine and decent drivers (you, Robinho, have Heidfeld and Glock. Not exactly race winners there).
Although Heidfeld has put up points. But still, I was thinking of someone like Rosberg or ...
OH! I see now why chass/eng only are in the top ten - the really good drivers, from Rosberg up cost 21-34, so there is no way to have a Red Bull/Renault or Red Bull/Mercedes or McLaren/Renault or McLaren/Mercedes with the very good drivers.
Kubica is out or else his price of 19 might have been a good number (and Lotus Renault would have been a much better team) to pair with a top chassis/engine.
As I have learned, to my cost, Michael is struggling in mid-field. Barrichello is sinking with Williams, and Force India have never capitalized on the great races they had in Belgium and Italy in '09.
After Sutil, even if Kobayashi is good, are drivers that are too inconsistent to be counted on race to race.
So that explains why the notion of good-to-great driver plus good-to-great chas/eng = win, which is usually true, is not the case this season.
Robinho
1st August 2011, 16:25
yeah, I went against my previous years and concentrated on RBR and Merc engines and just tried to fit some drivers in (think mine are heidfield and Perez actually) both of which should have scored more points than they have. As it is I outscored Stasio this week, If i continue to up the gap (currently 31 points) gradually, or the bonus is when he scores the same as this week He'd only score 72 and would only outscore me by the 30 odd points difference at the moment. It looks like it is going to stay pretty close and i think most of the guys at the top have very similar combinations.
Robinho
1st August 2011, 16:29
yeah its stasio that has Heidfield and Glock, his big points come from RBR and Renault, since RBR have been caught by Mclaren and Ferrari the tactic of putting all the eggs in the RBR and Renault package is proving costly, whilst my combination of RBR and Merc means decent points in all races rather than really big is some races.
N. Jones
1st August 2011, 18:11
Ah, okay. I goofed the drivers up, sorry.
It is going to be very close at the top. I guess it just might come down to the drivers!
Robinho
1st August 2011, 19:35
i think it will come down to who finishes the year best of RBR, Ferrari and McLaren, but the odd few driver points could be the separator if it stays really close

I'm really disappointed in Heidfeld and Lotus this season. After Hungarian GP Renault had 106 pts last year. If they were as good as last year with Kubica I would be first in the standings. So now I have to count on RBR and new updates.

I agree. Had I waited for Heidfeld to announce I probably would have picked him as well.
But you're still in really good shape. With a decent bonus GP you should at least move up to a strong second place in the overall, if not in first. That's when my secret weapon Kobayashi is going to hunt down your team and reel you in race by race until I emerge victorious.
Oh but wait... reality says that my team always sucks towards the end of the season. Never mind the above and good luck! :)

You never know. McLaren seems to be getting much better. If they start to lose more races you may yet keep your lead.

Just curious... is there provisions for tie breakers? Not that I'd mind being in a tie for 3rd place, but not sure if the rules even went that in depth.
I'm sure it won't matter regardless. I've contacted several other teams and the stewards and one of us is going to protest Stasio I Jasios season while the others look for a reason for said protest. Taking a lesson from Enzo Ferrari, we may petition to exlude the last race from the calendar, thus giving another team a chance to win!

if i have a decent result and score around 50 then you need 75, which is obviously only 37 ish before a double score.
if we have a repeat of this week i scored 40 and you 30, which would you 60 and i would take it by a couple of points, but that requires a Vettel/red bull retirement.
i fear it won't be close and you'll pick up 80+ points in Brazil

But it was close... so close he only beat me by a real good non bonus GP worth of points! Great job to the Stasio i Jasio team for once again pulling a Vettel and easily stomping the rest of us. :)
Same for Rocky Road. I clawed back a little towards the end but it was too little too late. Great picks.

Thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU for entering, playing, and/or commenting throughout the season! Your contributions mean everything to me. Without them FGP would be pretty lonely!
FGP 2012 will return six weeks before the first race begins. Maybe there will be a change or two, I don't know.
Enjoy the offseason!

Thanks for all the effort... without it FGP would be beyond lonely since it wouldn't exist. Hopefully next year will have even more members entering.
Maybe we need weekly grid girl photos to bring more competition? :D

so close, but after a good year I end as nothing more than 1st loser. Well done to Stasio, well deserved, had the best team and hung on for the bonus GP very cleverly.

Congrats to the top 3! It was a poor year for me but I'm still proud of a joint-win this year.

Thanks a bunch for running FGP. Despite Blue Ridge's worst season ever (47th), I kept checking in until the bitter end ;)

Poor year for Mt Damavand F1 with a 15th place finish. After finishing 11th last year, I really wanted a top 10 results this year.
Oh well, at least I won a GP (my bonus GP) so that was one ambition fulfilled.
Bring on 2012... can't wait for it.
Thanks N. Jones, as always. Great work.

Thanks everyone!
I wish for more entries too. What does everyone think of open enrollment, a' la pick'ems? Do you think if some people waited after the first race to submit a team they might gain an unfair advantage?
One thing I am going to do is tweak the prices so people can get a better balance of driver and end/chass. This season was lower scoring than last because all of the good drivers cost too much.
Lastly, and I know I shouldn't say this, I wish there were more people who commented after the race in this thread. We all have strong opinions about F1 and I hoped that this thread could be fun one, where controversy was avoided.

I'm not sure about the open entries... the advantage of seeing cars and drivers on track might give advantage to the teams that waited and picked late. But then again if you tweak the rules and purchasing power that might not be such a big advantage. I still say forum grid girls would be the real draw. :)
As for the comments after the races, one of the reasons I enjoyed doing that this year was the lack of bickering and politics that exist on this thread vs the rest of the forum. People can have a good joke at their own expense, talk smack, etc all in fun and without the crap involved in the other threads. I hope it stays that way.

31st overall for me. POSF1 went backward after a 28th place finish last year.
McLaren-Mercedes better step up those results next year since they are contracted to us for 2012!

Really? I had stepped away from the other threads because I thought the bickering was terrible. If it has indeed changed then I'll have to step back in!

Thank You all. And thanks to N. Jones for emotions and fun.
It was fantastic season for me. Stasio i Jasio GP have been chasing Rocky Road all season long. And finally we did it.
Thanks to Robinho for a good strong fight. Good luck next year! :)

Right. I misread it the first time.
I'll reiterate - I hope this thread in 2012 can be a safe haven from insanity!

This thread has been a safe and fun one, which is also why I probably comment on it more than any other thread.
I'm also not sure about open entries, it would be a huge advantage to see the cars in action. But I also recognise that one of the main issues we have in attracting teams each year is timing, i.e., we only accept entries before the season starts, which is when most people actually don't visit these forums. When the season starts and they come back for the occasional visit, there is no chance of them getting involved.
I don't know how to solve this though, but it's an issue.

Not a good championship for me but glad I had a win at Monza, even if it was a bonus GP.
Next year you could collect email adresses too to notify them when results are updated, might bring a bit more discussion to the thread.
Thanks very much for your work running it this year!

2010 - 28th
2011 - 31st
All of this after finishing in the top 15 in 2008. :(
