In 1986, Dale Earnhardt won his second Winston Cup by 288 points over DW. He had 5 wins (to Tim Richmond's 7), 16 top 5's (to DW's 21) and a series high 23 top 10's (DW had 22). Big E led 2127 laps that year, 23.09% of the laps he completed.

Lets see how the FIA Cup shakes out:

001 Dale Earnhardt.........323
002 Darrell Waltrip........305
003 Tim Richmond...........288
004 Ricky Rudd.............221
005 Geoff Bodine...........177
006 Bill Elliott...........171
007 Harry Gant.............143
008 Bobby Allison..........141
009 Rusty Wallace..........129
010 Neil Bonnett...........116
-----------------------------
011 Joe Ruttman............112
012 Terry Labonte..........111
013 Bobby Hillin...........110
014 Richard Petty..........099
015 Kyle Petty.............095

34 drivers scored at least 1 point. Dale Earnhardt clinched his first FIA CUP by finishing p2 at the final race at Riverside, winning by 18 points over ole DW. Richmond's 7 wins kept him within 35 points of Big E for p3, but his horrid inconsistency did him in even in this system. 13 drivers had at least 100 points, and Kyle Petty's 95 points in p15 was the record not to be tied until 2004, and beaten in 2007. Big E averaged 11.1 PPR, and the group averaged 5.9. There were 29 races that year, the series entering a relatively stable period of 29 per year that would last through 1992. Neil Bonnett missed just one race, making the groups avg starts 28.9 of the 29 races. The groups avg start is 11.4, and avg finish 13.8. 25 of the 29 wins were among the top 10 drivers, and 28 of the 29 were in the top 15 (Morgan Shepard won the spring Atlanta race). The groups RAF went up slightly to 21.3 of 29 (but dropping in pct to 73.73%) and DNF's climbed to 7.6 average. The group averaged finishing on the lead lap 9.5 races, the last time it would be in single digits, and that would be a then record 32.72%.

The 1985 Bud Pole Award Co-Winners are Tim Richmond and Geoffrey Bodine with 8 poles each.

Congrats to Dale Earnhardt, the 1986 Winston Cup and FIA Cup Champion
