In 1983, Bobby Allison finally got it done and won his first and only Winston Cup Championship, besting ole DW by 47 points. Both Bobby and DW lead the series with 6 wins each, DW had the edge in top 5's 22-18, and they both had 25 top 10's. DW was the Lap Leader again, leading 2363 laps, which is 25.13 % of the laps he completed that year.

As you can see for only the second time since 1975 has the FIA Cup been won by a different driver than the Winston Cup (the first being 1980).
36 drivers scored at least 1 point this year, including Canadian driver Trevor Boys who many of today's fans may recognize for his qualifying attempts at races in the western US. DW pulled it out for 3rd straight time in this deal, by 54 points over Allison. DW averaged 13.8 points per race this year. The average PPR of the top 15 rose to 6.4, up 0.3 from last year.
The group averaged starting 28.1 races out of the 30, the highest it had been to date. The groups avg start was 9.8, and avg finish was 13.8. 25 of the 30 race wins were in the top 10, and all 30 were in the top 12 (12th place Cale Yarborough only ran in 16 races, but won 4 of them, or 25 % of the races he participated in.
The groups reliability numbers are looking better, with their RAF up to 19.7 races of 30 (70.31%) and the average DNF's down to 8.3 (still high, but down 2.0 from the previous year's record). The groups lead lap finish's are up to an avg of 8.5 of the 30 races, cracking 30% for the first time (30.17%)....

The Bud Pole Award winner is Darrell Waltrip, with 7 poles....
