Not a very interesting route - hasn't anybody told the organisers you can have a 2-4 day events with less repeated stages.
How many other events will stay the same?

General Prim

Why not to put some stages from Faro to Lisbon, and opposite in order to have more kms as Jean Todt said?
One day more with no action for everybody, more $$$ for hotels, rent-a-car, etc, etc
No sense

Algarve isn't really a busy region outside of Summer months so they tried as much as they could to keep stages on weekend so that people from the North and Centre can watch the rally without taking more than 1 or 2 days from work, plus there are some new stages and some changes in the route.

And before Alentejo and near Lisbon there are not many roads to use as stages, without considering of course Sintra, near Lisbon, but that is impossible since those roads would be filled and most of the stages cancelled by the large numbers of spectators.

Manufacturer entries for Rally Portugal here: http://www.fia.com/en-GB/mediacentre/pressreleases/wrc/2011/Pages/wrc_entries_prt.aspx

Looks like PSWRT has finally registered for manu championship. Also entries from Brazil WRT and Van Merksteijn Motorsports, respectively. Add Wilson, Sousa, R. Kuipers (S2000) and Araujo in S2000 MINI to these entries...Portugal looking quite good. Full entry list will likely be out in the coming days.

trully amazing work....thank you for your passion.

however on the 3d tour is there a way to tour through the stage at a lower speed ? the stage goes too far and there is too little time to study the potential good spots...

Once again thank you for your contribution, your site is now in my favourites.

Tyre degradation is normally an issue in Portugal, so Loeb or Ogier are looking good for the victory? Well probably only Loeb now lol

It's not clear how big restrictor they will run in WRC events. In other events it's around 40-50 Hp difference, in WRC it may be even same. Really depends on restrictor size which is not clear to me.

Long term forecast tells that all kind of rain should end by Thursday afternoon (on Wednesday and Thursday there is a very slight chance of rain). It should be bone dry until at least next Wednesday. There is again slight chance of light rain on next Thursday.
It also gets slightly warmer from this Thursday and much warmer from Friday (approximately 20 degrees during the mid-day). Warm weather is most likely to continue until the beginning of the rally.Unfortunately my maps end with next Thusrday and I cannot tell more right now.

Is it already clear which size of restrictor does class 1 run in WRC events?

HaCo
16th March 2011, 17:41
If you ask for it I don't think so. :)

I tought I've read it here somewhere the super production restrictor was defined to 30mm for national events? I could be wrong, not good at numbers, but I do remember it was more restricted than the WRC 1.6T cars (weren't they 40mm?). However, if you think about the concept behind the WRC and SPWRC class, FIA wanted that you could easily adapt a SPWRC to WRC in WRC event, so my guess (logic) is no restrictor at all. But you're right: it's not clear. I could imagine troubles at scruteneering for the Mini's :(

Nobody in close contact with the Portugees team or Prodrive?

Mirek
16th March 2011, 17:55
You're right, it's 30 mm for regional events. But I can't see anywhere something valid for WRC events which have their own regulations.

Not much help but its days 2 or 3. Remember listening to the stage interview and Sordo mentions that the camera men are in a dangerous position

So the shakedown is today on the afternoon? Im not updated on the matter so why is that?

Because they need to go to Lisboa to compete in SSS1 tomorrow and then come back to the south by Friday. And there is approximately 300km between Faro and Lisboa.. so, that is nearly 600km. Shakedown is going to begin soon..

yes.. at least the landscape is quite nice :-) And the weather will be ok as well.
During the shakedown we can expect sunny, but windy conditions (5-7 m/s).Temperature will be uncharacteristically low. By the beginning of the shake it should be near to 16 degrees. by the end it drops a few degrees.

The start of the rally might be very cold.. it was below +6 degrees tonight in rally region. By the start of first stage on Friday it might be only +10 degrees

Ahh thank you for the answer! I have to say that is quite crazy to travel with all the teams, drivers, broadcast buses and everything to Lissboa for just
one stage.. I r remember that they did that in Argentina one year but that something went wrong with the flighs back and the whole first day was cancelled. It should also be very expensive, but maybe its worth it to have the opening stage in the capital.

But as a door opener to the US for Rally, and WRC he could have a huge impact. He is there to have fun, and do as well as he can. His goal is points in each rally he told Motorsport News in an Interview, and that is a reachable goal, if he stays on the road.....

The smaller restrictor is only for the regional championships.

The cars is basicly a WRC with less 30 or 40kg (glass rear windows instead or acrilic) and a smaller wing. On the tarmac trllyes, but only on tarmac, the front brakes are diferent (i think in terms of cooling)

Wow, so that is what it ended up with, no engine difference btw a WR Car and a SP used in a WRC round ?

It was Mirek that started asking this some time ago maybe because there’s only one set of specific regulations for both S2000 and WRC cars (http://argent.fia.com/web/fia-public.nsf/EB85426AC69EDFF5C125784D005EE146/$FILE/255A%20%2811-12%29-080311.pdf) and there's only the 33 mm restrictor is mentioned (page 3). I haven’t seen any confirmation about this.

And then there is the press release from FIA 11.2.2011 that “suggest” that also.

“Following a fax vote by the members of the World Motor Sport Council, the regulation (Article 255A, Appendix J, 5.1.1.b) relating to the size of the restrictor in the 1.6 litre turbo-charged Super 2000 car has been confirmed as 30mm. This applies to all such cars competing in 2011 FIA Regional Rally Championship events.

This regulation is intended to balance the performance of cars powered by 2 litre normally-aspirated engines and 1.6 litre turbo-charged cars.”

http://www.fia.com/en-GB/mediacentre/pressreleases/wrc/2011/Pages/fia-regional-rally.aspx

But how about next year if there’s SWRC for S2000 NA and SP (30 mm restrictor). Are there going to be class 1 cars with different restrictor sizes in WRC rounds?

J.Lindstroem
24th March 2011, 12:21
Ok this might be considered as a stupid question but i have to ask since i am confused about this. If the Super Production car and the Wrc car has the same engine spec, why does the SP car even exist? Why isn't it called Wrc car? Just because the rear wing ans something more? And what class is Araujo driving? The Wrc class then? I thought he was driving in the S2000 class.

I dont understand anyting right now.

Armindo is on Classe 1...

Is the same situation of call a "S2000" to a car that as a 1600 Turbo engine. Completely non-sense.

By the way, "SP" is a label from Prodrive, is not oficial. The oficial is "S2000"... but now they have "S2000 WRC" and "S2000 Regional" :D

http://www.rallydeportugal.pt/content.aspx?menuid=53

The basic idea with all this is that a driver can use the same car, with minor changes, in both WRC and regional rounds. But why allow a 33 mm restrictor for the S2000 1.6T (class 1) cars in WRC rounds I don’t understand.

By the way, "SP" is a label from Prodrive, is not oficial. The oficial is "S2000"... but now they have "S2000 WRC" and "S2000 Regional" :D

Yes calling a 1600 car S2000, that already is a class and where the 2000 figure direct goes towards the cylinder volume is not logical at all !!

But now it seems we have 3 cars specs with 1600T engine

WRC: all singing all dancing 1600T engine, S2000 based chassis
S2000 WRC: WRC engine with 33 mm restrictor, but small spoiler and small breaks
S2000 Regional: 30 mm restrictor, small spoiler and small breaks

And none of the last two have recieved a name from either FIA or producers, apart from Mini.

If a guy want to drive one WRC round with his regional car, without changing a bit on the car - what class would he drive in in WRC ?

The whole thing is so complicated. Its bizarre! I never thought it could be this strange. When i heard about the rule changes a thought great now we have turbucharged 1600cc engines for the Wrc class, and 2000cc non turbo engines for the S2000 class. End of discussion, but clearly things cant just be that simple? Why is that?

very interesting what lapworth is saying. so 0,5 to 1 second slower then the wrc will be. araujo 10 seconds slower on the shakedown then the fastest wrc, on 5,8 km. so almost 2 seconds slower per km then fastest wrc. this should mean mini wrc is around 1 second per km slower then ford and citroen, if araujo would be as good as ogier, latvala etc. it doesnt seem to look too extremely bad then i guess...
