Rally Kurzeme-2013
Spin, off, some close calls, jump, water's plash.
That water plash aren't natural?.. that water flow

Tarmac and speed - versus handling of car in hands of drivers not able to come out good from hazardous situations. (Having said without knowing circumstances today - but generally speaking tarmac gives a much more dangerous way of doing rallies. Especially when there´s a combination of high speeds)

Correct, it's manmade.

To won the national title already by the end of August (start of the second half of the seson) definetely meens that championship itself was booring, without competition.

In Austria Raimund Baumschlager is already champion 2013 (for the 11th time) - a very similar situation to other countries with the dominating drivers being older experienced, but still very fast drivers, who´s international chances/times are more or less gone, except when international rallies take place in their home countries (e.g. now Pech at Barum)

And what about Kim Madsen for his first outing in the official 208 R2(finished 12th overall)

Drove decently I guess, was very obvious that he was uncertain of the car.
Spoke to him Friday night during the 'rallyshow' (basically stage 3+6 used as shakedown) and he said it was really fun to drive, but that it was very strange to him still. Friday night was his first run at real speed, we don't really have testing here.
He said that he needed to get used to the fact that the car feels the same inside, but is a lot narrower than the Maxi - and that he no longer needs to ease on the throttle..
He did look nervous on the high speed sections where I was on stage 8 and 10, but looked to be pushing more and more during the day in the 'normal' sections.
Also, he stills runs according to the Danish seeding system, so he started among Evos and Maxis on stages that were laps of the same route. I know at least once he was bothered because Steen Andersen was about to catch him on a long section of straights, but then he could maintain the gap (he could see him in the mirrors, but didn't affect either) in the next twisty section through a forest.
Besides, for the spectators it was a strange sight to see a small standard-ish looking car in between the bigger and much louder cars. :D

In our national rallies, he should be a lock to win class 2, and should challenge for Division B honours for r2 and r3 cars.
Especially since it seems Klaus Hammer will be out for a fair while.

Unfortunately, it is now official: A woman has died after the car crashed into the spectators during the Amsterdam Rallysprint. Three further spectators are (heavily) injured.....

Some witnesses say they were sent away from their spectating spot twice by the marshalls, but they didn't listen and kept returning.

RIP. :(

This incident had nothing to do with gravel on tarmac. The problem is the positioning of spectators in this one. A car can lose brakes on both gravel and tarmac... Other than that, there are more fatal accidents on tarmac, but there are much more events on tarmac in Europe as well...

If my memory is correct, a very similar accident happened in Barneveld some years ago (2007-2008??), where a car missed junction (after losing brakes) and went into the public. Any Dutch member can confirm? The danger in the straights after junctions is very underestimated in many countries... :(

RIP...

Yes..don't know what year, but we were at that spot. At night. Almost a hairpin left. Couldn't make the corner after losing his brakes, straight on were big trees and so he decided to take the junction right straight into the spectators there. But most people got really lucky there, only one men broke his leg I believe.

The problem with spectators on such places is that on asphalt it's extremely easy to underestimate the danger. Most of the cars just brake and turn without any sign of crisis, all look so natural but crisis on asphalt usually come out of a sudden. Unfortunately people don't have much respect for authorities and often think they know everything better.

A quick trans of some interesting statistics...

Little research by Georgi Ivanov suggested by Damian Kirov :)

Salyuk drive a car with no victory

The hired of Alexander Salyuk and Yevhen Chervonenko Skoda Fabia S2000 is one of the busiest in the history of Super 2000 cars , but probably one of those who achieved least success.
Both Ukrainians rent the car from the Czech JM Racing, the car has a solid history behind since 2009. The chassis № 21 debut in rally " Bohemia " with Shtepan Vojtech behind the wheel who, however, feil. Right after that comes the first success for Grzhegorzh Grzhib who finished third in ralisprint "Vsetin " and brings Czech championship points .
Series of starts followed and the car is driven by a series of pilots : Per - Gunnar Andersson ( Sweden Rally 2010 WRC, Rally Jordan 2010 WRC), Michal Kosciuszko ( Rally Portugal 2010 WRC, Rally Poland 2010 ERC), Eyvind Brindilsen ( 2010 Rally France WRC) , etc... In 2010 the car run 15 rallies , four of them in the World Rally Championship .
In 2011 came another 13 rallies , six of them in the World Championship with Karl Kruuda . In 2012 the car runs 15 rallies , mainly in national and continental championships.
In 2013 chassis № 21 season starts with the first round of the ERC Rally " Yaner " with Roman Odlozhilik behind the wheel and 11th place overall . Followed rally " Monte Carlo " where Rashid Al - Ketbi is 17th in the finals , and rally Sweden where he ends 26 in the snow. In Portugal , however, al- Ketbi crashes and fails.
In the last two races before the rally "Sliven" Grzhegorzh Grzhib finished third in rally " Rzhezhovski " which is the Polish championship and Marco Tempestini score fifth in the Romanian gravel Rally " Arad " . Hired by Salyuk for Rally Sliven 2013.
Best ranking in the career of chassis № 21 was in 2010 , when Grzhib finish second in the rally " Lyubenik " - Slovak Rally Championship .

So, another victory for Fiesta R5 in Sliven. I attended the Rally yesterday and had some nice time.Looks like Donchev is getting more familiar with the car since last time I saw him. It was nice fight in the morning between him and Iliev with Fabia S2000. In the second loop though Donchev began to build confidence and advantage. On SS08 Stara Reka 02 both seemed pretty much on the limit as you see of the video below, but Donchev was taking 0.5 sec/km over Iliev. Looks like today was protocol for both of them, but not for Salyuk who came here for victory, but made some mistake in SS04 Stara Reka 1, had puncture and lost over 2 minutes. Today managed to claim 3rd place. The stages above Sliven are very demanding, especially Stara Reka & Bulgarka and probably Salyuk will manage to do better next time when already have some knowledge for them, if he comes.Kara was driving nicely on the asphalt stages, but probably it's the car which lets him down mostly. Shame for the just another technical problem for Surilov - he was again impressive driving GrN Evo IX.Here are some shots I made on Stara Reka 1&2:

All-of-a-sudden Donchev has been disqualified of Sliven 2013 due to non-homologated brake coolers, Iliev has been promoted to 1st place, Salyuk 2nd, Kara 3rd. The team has right to appeal.

Last week-end my brother and me we've been to rally Sliven - a round of Bulgarian rally championship and a round of European rally cup. We've managed to watch 8 of 13 ss. I was hoping that Saluik will have the pace to fight for the 1-st place with Krum Donchev and Dimitar Iliev, so we can watch a three way battle but he has some problems with the start procedure at ss2 and lost about 30 sec. and after that pn ss4 he has a spin and a puncture so the battle was over for him early. Krum Donchev took the win with his new Fiesta R5 but was disqualified after the final scrutineering for non- homologated brake coolers. Something I found very strange because I doubt that his mechanics can invent something better than M- sport guys for a such short period.
Again people were standing at dangerous places. On the "famous" spot the Tree some of them were sitting on chairs placed on the road and when Anton Titov with DS3 R3 missed the shicane they were pretty lucky. Looks like the problem with spectators at dangerous places exists in all countries!
I will upload a short video later on!

Entries for the Hellendoorn Rally closed last night, and it looks like the biggest rally in the Netherlands still is exactly that.

No less than 10 WRC cars are entered, including 1 of which we don't know the driver yet because the organizers call him Mister X. Supposedly it is someone who has scored WRC points in the past, so rumours are it will be the comeback of Mark van Eldik since he is the only Dutch driver together with Dennis Kuipers and Peter van Merksteijn to ever score WRC points.

The other 9 WRC entries are:
Dennis Kuipers - Fiesta WRC
Peter van Merksteijn - DS3 WRC
Bernhard ten Brinke - Fiesta WRC
Bob de Jong - Lancer WRC
Jeroen Swaanen - C4 WRC
Erik van Loon - Focus WRC
Edwin Schilt - Impreza S14 WRC
Bas van Kamperdijk - Fiesta WRC
Peter Versluis - Fiesta WRC

Also Patrick Snijers is entered with a BMW.

All in all 5 new generation WRC's, including a DS3 for the first time. Looks to become a great event in 2 weeks time.

Hevia in Swift ? Pons in mitsubishi evo?? What is going on ??
P.S. Thank's god Vallejo still in 911 GT3....

Hevia is taking a sabbatical year this season because his back is injured. While he's been recovering from his disease, he received an invitation to drive at home as part of the program "Champions with Suzuki". The Japanese brand provides a Swift of their cup to a Spanish champion. Fuster was the first driver who drove for them on the previous rally, Ferrol. The next ones will be Marc Blazquez in Llanes, a champion to be confirmed in Sierra Morena and Jose Mari Ponce in Madrid.
Pons has driven the Porsche twice this season, but suffered several problems. This is the fourth time on the Mitsu this season, having quite good performances. In fact, he was about to win in Ferrol (over the unbeatable Monzon's Mini), but got a puncture that then affected the suspension, forcing him to withdrawal.
Yes, Vallejo brothers rules :D .

Not a strongest line-up at all, but still interesting, whether local heros - Gryazin, Vorobjovs, Plangi, Koitla, will be able to cope with Keetomaa or not. And of course R2 class. Seven guys and "no passengers" among them - all are equals in terms of speed.

I do not think so.Lukyanuk was driving Evo X, Koitla Evo IX. I am not sure but one of Luyanuk Sponsors was TZ Optica and he had big Pirelli sticker on its side as well, ASRT was only running his car if I am not wrong (maybe some support for sure as he was doing pretty good PR for them with his drive, but his drives were not cheap indeed)? Sooo... As we know in rally first and main finish is after last stage. But then there is another finish, and it is after final technical checks.
Both finishes reached K. Koitla/R. Kulgevee, second in group N4 and in absolute, great comeback for Kaspar Koitla fanclub.
Also M. ?enavs/R.R. V?ksna second in group R2. Good job!

But for Siim Plangi / Marek Sarapuu who were absolutely fastest in rally "Latvija 2013" only one finish (gaps in the brake system).
But THUMBS UP, for speed and confidence that the crew reached!

Nope tolis, this rally was not part of Slovenian championship (to short for our rules, one stage driven four times-Italian ''Ronde style''), it was a part of Alpe-Adria championship (some kind of Slovenian & Italian championship).
Next round for our championship is already this weekend-rally Croatia (valid also for E.C), the last one is in the mid of October, traditional rally Idrija.

Today was the last round Estonian rally sprint and last rally in Estonian Rally Trophy.
Results can be found here: http://autosport.ee/rallyreg/?page=32&r ... lang_id=2& (http://autosport.ee/rallyreg/?page=32&race_id=261&lang_id=2&)
Gross, was this time driving with his father and according to the rules, his father is now also champion in rallisprint:-)
There was one big crash just after the jump. Driver was taken to the hospital but hopefully nothing serious.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlNiYjdn ... e=youtu.be (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlNiYjdn5zc&feature=youtu.be)

There weresome funny happenings. Tänak got only 10th place during first pass/stage, because he had not enough fuel in his tank and he could not drive till the end in full speed.

Top three for the mini rally as well as for the rallly sprint was:
1. Gross/Gross Focus WRC
2. Koitla/Ots Mitsubishi evo IX
3. Tänak/Mölder Subaru Impreza

Another reason is possibly the fact that he has pretty much won all he has taken part in 2013. There is noo competition in this class for him. And it is one step to prepare for 2014 season..

Interesting onboard-comparison video from Hellendoorn...

On this stage, the timing said Van Merksteijn jr. was 7.6 seconds faster than Kuipers. Kuipers' co-driver didn't agree with this at all, but the time was not given back. In the end Kuipers still won, but see this video and judge by yourself if the difference on the stage really was 7.6 seconds..

Some notable news?
1. Tänak driving with Kruudas co-driver as he has the chanche to become Estonian Champion and Kruuda agreed to drive with his youngtime mentor Kuldar Sikk
2. Kruuda is not driving MMM car, they have big disagreement. This is also the reason why MMM R5 was for sale.
3. Timmu Kõrge is the second contender for the championship. He must finish second (if Tänak wins) and must finish the powerstage also second (if Tänak wins) to secure the title. By the way, both are from Saaremaa Island :-)
4. Kaspar Koitla is driving with Andres Ots (usually co-driver for Kangur) and as MM-Motorsport is renting car for Kangur and he didnt had co-driver then they "rented" their teammanager (as a co-driver) also :-)
5. Weather will be beautiful, but very cold in the morning
6. I belive that decicive stages will be stages nr 5 and 6

Humar has a chance to become 3rd time national champion, but he must watch for his main rival Tr?ek. There are more options, but as the rally itself is held in a Humar's birth town and surroundings, the clear favorite is more than obvious.....

The story
Day1
Gross went to lead the rally. Tänak also one one stage on Day 1 and the difference was not too big. Koitla broke his gearbox on SS2 and repaired it in the stage (lost 13 minutes), Aus lost some time when benting his rear wheel on the city stage and getting some time penalties in service while fixing it. Kangur jumped too far on SS2 and had some problems with the car for the rest of the day.

Day2
Started with the most difficult stages. One of them was almost new stage (SS5) as well. It is very narrow, fast with a lot of rythm changes. Tänak won those two stages and took nearly 20 seconds lead in front of Gross who was complaining on early morning wake-up problems (Tänak effort is clearly visible, you can see that sponsor sticers on the front bumper are worn out). Kaur was doing second fastest times and climbed to second place. Kõrge had some central diff problems. Gross started to take back time on the second passes and before the last stage he was still 4.4 seconds behind Tänak. Both put their maximum on the last stage and Gross won the rally by just 2 seconds - he managed to wake up and use the potential of his car. However, Tänak told that he has no regrets. There wasnt any places on the rally route where he could have taken these 2 seconds.

Meanwhile, Kaur had a puncture in SS8 (re-run of SS6) and he dropped to fourth. Kangur had problems with his confidence and everything. Plangi had one nasty Spin.

The final result is that Tänak/Järveoja are Estonian N4 Champions (while taking part in four out of 6 events in Estonian Championship), Pärn/Järveoja are Estonian 2WD champions after the rally. Gross won all the rallies in 2013 season and became overall champion, OT Racing is Estonian champion in team contest.

This coming week-end last round of danish championship(Danboring Rally) :)
http://www.rallyresult.dk/

Championship deciding time in Denmark now also, none of the championships are done yet.
Luckily a large entrylist has been published, I expect at least 50 and perhaps as many as 55 cars starting, which is a massive turnout by Danish standards. A large contingent of Norwegian drivers helps this number a lot. :lips:

The main championship (Division A - S2000 / N4) still has three potential winners, and many scenarios can still play out:
With the way the rules are put together, Christian Jensen HAS to get more points than Ib Kragh , he will lose tie-break situations no matter what.
Tim Svanholt would win a tie-break if he wins, and Kragh is NOT second. Jensen will only gain a tie-break on Svanholt if he wins the race.
Standings are:
Kragh 71 points
Jensen 67
Svanholt 64
Maximum score is 23 points (20 for a win, 3 for a win on 'Super Special Stage', Danish version of the Power Stage - in Herning this is Stage 12)

In Division B (in-homologation 2wd tuned - R2, R3, S1600), Frank Nielsen just has to finish to guarantee the championship, he leads Jacob Jensen by 17 points. Jacob is the only competitor with a chance of reaching Frank.
The fight for second overall however is tight, four drivers within 13 points, but no Klaus Hammer due to his crash at the fourth round of the championship.
An interesting addition is the return of Kasper Nyman, this time in a Fiat 500 R3T - the first R3T we have seen in Danish rallying, and a car I saw in person at Condroz 2011 at the hands of Vincent Radermecker. Dont know the history of this particular car, but Kasper has said that it is a factory built car.

In Division C (national homologation tuned 2wd - old maxis, homebuilds etc.), three drivers with a mathematical chance, though realistically Kenneth Madsen will be champion if he finishes. He has the tie-break on Morten Karl (non-starter due to an engine failure at a recent test) and a 14 point advantage over Jesper Bisted, the closest challenger. Kjeld Seidler is the other driver in with a chance at the title, should be very interesting if Madsens recent engine trouble strikes again, otherwise it might end up processional with the fastest of the three just needing a finish.

Division D (national homologation untuned 2wd), same situation as in Division B, one driver just has to finish to secure the title.
Henrik Larsen leads by 19 points from Nicolai Jensen and 22 from Ole Jensen.

I will be at the service park all day, and will try to see if I can update during the day in between servicing 'my' car.
Stage 1 starts at 11:29 and the final stage (points paying SS 12) will be at 18:55.

And just as a little teaser, then this is a link to the TV-review of the last round, please let me know if it is possible to view on a foreign IP. :)

Good to hear - and you can actually be a bit happy, the commentator is a moron.
Also, there has been a fair bit of grief here about the lack of coverage outside of the top three to five.
The other reviews of the season are also on the same channel.

I cant remember exactly, either he broke the rear diff or a drive shaft - either way he had to limp through the final stage, and at the stage-end interview he says that he isn't even sure if they will make it to the final TC.

24th October 2013, 11:22
The biggest surprise of the entry list is, that Walter Mayer entered with a Peugeot 207 S 2000 from BRR (!!!???). It will be interesting, if Kajto - with the Impreza - can battle with Baumschlager for the victory.

Many good austrian drivers are missing (Harrach, Grössing, Stohl, Rosenberger, Danzinger etc.). By the way I read in an austrian newspaper, that Harrach´s main sponsor should have finacial problems. Hopefully that doesn´t have any influence on his programme next year.

WUff1
24th October 2013, 11:37
I´m with you, hopefully Harrach stays, he and Grössing are the only real rivals for Baumschlager and BRR in Austrian championship.

Surprised about Walter Mayer too, maybe a pay drive?
I don´t think Kajto with the Impreza is able to battle with Baumschlager - just look at Jänner Rallye 2013.

Curious about Simon Wagner first time competing in a proper car (Evo IX instead of his usual old Evo III)

Wagner´s pace will be interesting.
But I´m a little bit afraid, that some fans in Austria have really unrealsitic expectations about him. Don´t get me wrong, I really think, that he is a talented guy, but still very unexperienced. After he won stage three of the Jänner Rallye some people in Austria thought, he would be already able to drive in the WRC. But you shouldn´t forget, that the road conditions of this stage were completley different when he drove compared to Bouffier or Kopecky.
I´m also not sure, if the people that surround him are that helpful for his career in the rallysport.

I don´t think Kajto with the Impreza is able to battle with Baumschlager - just look at Jänner Rallye 2013.

I agree. I don't think that Kajto will be giving his 100%. He is going there only to gain international experience. But of course I'd like to be wrong! :)

I´m with you, hopefully Harrach stays, he and Grössing are the only real rivals for Baumschlager and BRR in Austrian championship.

Surprised about Walter Mayer too, maybe a pay drive?

The question is ,what will decide Baumschlager, may be this was his last season?

A review of the sixth and final round of the Danish championships, contested on Saturday on the roads around the large sports town of Herning.
There was a beautiful setting for the event, as the service park was indoors in part of the massive MCH-complex, which started as a convention center - but today it has blossomed into also including the biggest concert venue in the country (Jyske Bank Boxen) and an 11.800-capacity stadium for the football team (MCH Arena). This worked really well, and was to play a major part in the tension late in the day. Besides the service park, there was also a stage right outside the door, so spectators and service crews alike could watch a bit of live action.

The weather on the day was VERY tricky, it was more or less wet to begin with, then dried up as we came closer to first service, then a bit of rain, and then the heavens really opened up! Tire choice was a massive gamble, and the tricky conditions no doubt helped along the drama of the last loop of stages.

To recap the boring bit of the day: The three crews that just had to finish to win the title in their division? Well, they did. Kenneth Madsen champion in Division C (tuned national 2wd), Frank Nielsen in Division B (R2 and R3 cars) and Henrik Larsen in Division D (basically Group E).
Kenneth Madsen won Division C on the day as well, but could be counted as a bit lucky to have done so - Benny Pedersen was the quicker on the day, but broke a steering arm and had to retire. Closest challenger was Jesper Bisted, who drove safe to take the silver medal overall.
Division B was won by a returning Simon Vallentin (206 S1600) who ran away from Kim Madsen to take a safe win by just under a minute.
Division D was taken by young Jacob Madsen (younger brother of Kenneth) - fastest driver on the day, with a winning margin of nearly three minutes.

And now back to the drama bit: The overall championship.
Before the race, Ib Kragh led by 4 points from Christian Jensen and 7 points from Tim Svanholt - the two first in 207 S2000s and Svanholt in an Evo IX. The expectations were quite clear: The championship would be decided on pace between Kragh and Jensen, or Svanholt would bring it home on consistency.
From the early morning start (or not.. 11 o'clock. ) Christian Jensen set the pace, and by the time of the first service, he led by almost half a minute from Svanholt. Kragh was fifth, but had issues on stage 1 and again on stage 3.
Second service, Jensen still led by slightly less than half a minute, but from Steen Andersen (Evo X) now - Svanholt third, and Kragh only 11th after further problems.
At this, the midway point of the event, the championship was with Jensen, Kragh second and Svanholt third. Let's just say, that would change!
At the final service, with three stages left to go.. in torrential weather like earlier, but now combined with being dark, Jensen still led from Andersen and Svanholt with Kragh having mounted a comeback to seventh - Jensen with a 33 second lead and no need to win, there was little doubt in the service park that he would go safe to a repeat of his championship from last year.
That would all change on stage 11, when Svanholt passed Jensen parked along the side of the road.. the engine had given up, and the championship was now blown wide open! Svanholt second and Kragh eighth (more problems on ss11), which meant that the championship would go into the final stage of the season TIED ON POINTS! Kragh had the tiebreaker, so the season would be decided by who went fastest on the final stage.. all to play for, and by now the entire exhibition hall containing the service park was buzzing! People calculating all over the place, phones and laptops checking live timing - and that's not even mentioning the rumour mill..

Svanholt was second car on the stage, and duly beat Andersen by 7,5 seconds, which sent even more buzz around the service park.. Andersen had been faster than Svanholt most of the day - was this a blistering time from Svanholt (he matched his time from earlier..) or slow from Andersen (17 seconds slower than the first run)? Buzz kept going, and every time that rolled in was significantly slower than both Svanholt and Andersen. The tension was as heavy as I have experienced in the last 10 years in Denmark, no-one bothered packing up their gear, it was all about the wait for Kragh who went something like tenth on the stage.
When the time rolled in - second fastest, 3,2 seconds slower than Svanholt! There were quiet cheers in the Svanholt camp, but also massive nervousness, the car still had to make it back. Once they did with no damage, they were met by a mob of people from more or less every team ready to congratulate them!
Both on the finishing ramp and at the prize giving ceremony later on, there were massive cheers and standing ovations for a hugely deserved championship - this was the only top driver to bring home points from every event this year.. and he beat the 'S2000 army' in an inferior Group N car. All in all, a highly talented driver with a very nice demeanor in an inferior car - this was the fairytale story!

Steen Andersen won the rally overall for his second win of the year, but it's safe to say that this was a forgotten win, everything was focused on the championship.

Post race, Ib Kragh was excluded for having been outside the time limit, which didn't change anything overall: He was a dejected second, and Christian Jensen an equally dejected third.

Baumschlager out on first SS of the day (technical Problem)! His first retirement this season.

New leaders are Kajetanowicz, Tarabus (with 95 sec behind Kajto) and Austrian Mario Saibel (Fabia S000).

Isn't that his first ever technical-related retirement in four years with Fabia? I remember only the exclusion for driving in opposite direction on circuit stage as his only retirement in last few years. Is that right?

Yes it is. Rallye Waldviertel must have been his 37th austrian rally with Fabia. So 36 starts without retirement - quite impressive.

No way to compare Baumschlager and Kajetanowicz. Just try to imagine, that Baumschlager would won this year rally of Poland. Even if he would seat in a proper WRC car, simply not possible....Kajeto is in a different league...especialy on gravel, where Mundl never showed something extraordinary (forget Austrian championship, where the only real threat was Harrach).

Hello forum members,

maybe it´s still to early but after appearence of ÖRM calender I´m looking for possible tarmac testrallyes in europe before 1st ÖRM tarmac rallye (22.3). Important: FIA-homologation of the car is not valid anymore (ex A7, Gr. H in Austria), any hints and suggestions appreciated, the closer to austrian border the better of course :)
