I want to buy the forthcoming F1 game, but do not own an Xbox or PS3. As I intend buying one especially for the game, I'd like to know which one I'm better off buying. Fortunately cost isn't an issue too much, I just want to get the better machine.
Suggestions and reasons please.

well, to play online, you'll need to pay extra for xbox live, while on the ps3 its free. There are more steering wheels for ps3, many good ones made by logitech, although the offical xbox 360 is good. Both consoles also have a good selection of racing games, but the ps3 has gran turismo 5 coming in novmeber.
Also remember, both consoles have good non gaming features, for instance, the ps3 has a blu-ray disc player, and you can download movies from the playstion store. the 360 has features such as last fm, facebook and twitter.
its a hard decision, shop around for bundles, both consoles are good.

I get the opinion from people talking on the codemasters forum that the PS3 version will look better as it's more powerful.

You can download movies for 360 too. I actually have both and find the playstation to be better, even if the online experience is marginally weaker. You can still surf the internet and also watch BBC iPlayer (probably UK only). Last.fm is good but you can't listen to it while playing in a game so you may as well just have a laptop playing alongside you (most people do these days anyway).
The steering wheel and pedals for the 360 is very good (the steering gets heavy on tight corners and the pedals have a hole cut out so that you don't end up chasing them across the floor.
I'd opt for PS3 though, especially with GT5 coming out before Christmas (so they say).

I have both and I find myself playing the 360 more. I find the controllers more comfortable but really its just personal preference. I play most games on the PC though.

I have an Xbox360 and have been more than happy with it. I get access to all the games I want (mostly sports titles), the graphics are fine, and online is excellent.
But, forgetting about the F1 game, what other games are you likely to want to buy? Have a look at the titles available on both consoles, and those that are exclusive to one or the other. For every exclusive title there is usually something very similar on the other console i.e. Gran Turismo v Forza Motorsports.
I'd say there isn't much to chose between the two in terms of performance. Sure, there are those who'll swear one is far superior to the other, but when it comes to sitting in front of your tv playing games then the experience offered by both is excellent.

I don't play videogames a lot, got my ps3 for the blu-ray movies. That is a big bonus in my view. Will be getting this game. I always thought the xbox is the better console for online gaming? I only got three games apart from some online games through the ps network. I have GTA (quit after 10% of the game), Prince of persia (never played it apart from putting the disc into the ps3) and Street fighter 4. Hopefully i will be playing the formula 1 game in advance of the real races.
