Right, a little history lesson here (just for LCD ;) ) - back in the early 90's the cost of Group A rallying in the WRC was rising and the manufacturers were reducing due to their inability to sell the 25 000 models required for a model to get homologated into the WRC (only the Japanese manufacturers could sustain that sort of annual figure, which gave rise to the dominance of Toyota, Subaru and Mitsubishi). So the FIA decided that they would make the world championship for 2wd cars only from 1997 and in the meantime started a category called Formula 2 which catered for these cars and allowed manufacturers to gain experience. By 1997 the manufacturer interest was huge but the FIA had already decided to use the basic plan for Formula 2 but all people to add 4wd in order to make the current World Rally Car rules. Quite ironically Peugeot almost won WRC events in 1997 & 98 and Citroen actually managed to win 2 WRC events in 1999 before the FIA put in new rules to slow down these F2 machines on tarmac, and therefore signalled the death of the series as a mainstream category.
But it was 6 years of awesome sounding rally cars. The British championship in particular was brilliant in this era.

I was interested to see Ray's comparison of East-West (before they were destroying it) in real life versus the PC version. I believe the RBR versions are based on the characteristics of the stages and maybe key features (like the mineshaft stage).

@pettersolberg29 - I think I'll just cancel that stage cos it's not one of the originals and I came up with the route before I finalised my plans for the season.
@tannat - I'll give you 3 guesses... and the first 2 don't count! =P

Finished my runs last night. SS1 went fine, managed to stay on the road, but the grip level is either there or not in these things, not much of a fine line so a few close calls. SS2 I went off slightly and got stuck in the undergrowth so lost time there. SS3 was a very close call with some trees but only spun, SS4 wasn't so clean but besides hitting a spectactor it was alright. Final stage was going ok, but hit a spectator and then went head first into a tree later on. Game over.

Should be able to do this at the weekend. I do love the F2 cars, but I've not much experience with them on RBR.

First of all, thanks Bruce for giving us the chance to race some cars we rarely pick!
Been a very bussy week and couldn't test any of the cars, that's why I didn't sent my entry, earlier.
Hopefully, found some time and just did my rally In a Seat Ibiza Kit car. ;)
Start of the rally was Ideal In Falstone, but had some steering Issues In Tanner and a fatal error
before even reaching 1st split In Prospect Ridge, where I smashed my engine on a tree, so used the super rally.
The asphalt stage of the rally could be better, If more of my hairpins were accurate, but pulled myself together
In Greenhills, where I think I did a good run. Don't know If SSS Portugal
was finally cancelled-hope It was :D because It was a complete disaster;
hitting all over the place-I even called for help twice!!! there!
Overall, that was a very enjoying event, with a nice variety of stages and some great rally cars!

Had that once or twice, notably at the Canyon stage. Another reason to avoid these extra stages in future.

I just finished my rally and have sent in my times. I have mixed feelings about this rally. First of all it was nice to drive these kind of cars but on gravel it felt like it was fish out of water. I really struggled with the slow corners to get some power down to the road. But on tarmac and on faster gravel stages it was really good, sometimes even better than older WR cars.
Overall I am quite glad I finished because there were some really scary moments and one roll.
On the first stage I had a halfspin and SS2-SS5 went cleanly but I held little bit back. On SS6 I clipped the barrier on the last corner and the car rolled but luckily it landed on it's wheels so I could drive over the finish line which was only 5 meters away.
I have no idea what my pace was because have nothing to compare my times with but I'm looking forward seeing the final results.

12th September 2010, 21:27
Finished rally and times sent.
Went very well I think. As with NeverKnow, struggled with power coming out of corners - especially on Joux Verte with the uphill hairpins. Unbelievably I was 4s up on my best ever time in the first sector of Prospect Ridge, but ended 20s or so behind my best as the stage went on. Greenhills was very fun. Liked the rally altogether, and the 306 was as good as ever.
Just for fun I tried a snow stage afterwards and I can say I'm glad there isn't one in the actual rally - was a nightmare!
Bruce D
13th September 2010, 06:28
Exactly why I didn't do snow. I'd tried these cars out a few months ago and found on snow they were terrible. Looking back on the rally now I should have made it a half tar half gravel rally but it was still fun. The traction problems and understeer where the fun part of these cars.
pettersolberg29, if you were 4sec up on your personal best when you should have struggled for wheelspin off the line, I think you need to improve your PB! :p

Exactly - I have never failed to crash in that first sector before. I don't love those tricky USA stages so rarely play them so probably only finished the stage on my new PC game about 5 times, and in all of them I had to 'cal for help' at least once!
Bruce D
13th September 2010, 12:09
Yeah I remember when I used to do the championship seasons quite a lot, I always feared USA, it was a case of getting through it rather than going for the win. Did manage to win it once but the next season had the biggest accident I ever had in RBR while 0.11sec in front overall. That was a DNF and I lost the championship in the end.

Just waiting for Tannat's times now and then everyone is in.
I've finished the rally too. I drove the 306 and was quite impressed by it. Falstone was good. Tanner was decent enough. Prospect Ridge, on the other hand, was fairly messy. I don't like this stage too much. There are some lovely long stretches but also a couple of unseen hazards which caught me out! Greenhills was nothing major. I don't know the stage well at all so I think I overshot a junction at one point. I had an excellent run through Joux Verte up until the final hairpin on the stage, where I banged into something on the inside of the corner. I didn't damage the car or loose too much time but it would have been nice to have nailed that corner correctly. The Portugal SS was a mess. Hopefully, it will not be counted.
I see that the deadline is tomorrow. I'm using Uni computers and I don't have my USB key handy right now. I will email the times on tomorrow at the latest.

Same - there is a junction about 2.3km into the stage where the pacenote is called after the corner meaning you go straight on and have to do a handbrake turn and then lose about 3s in the process. Thankfully, and weirdly, I was mid-spin at that point so managed to spin into the corner!

A dominant win for pettersolberg29 in the end, only losing one stage (the tar one). A special mention must be made about 52Paddy, who, IMHO, drove the best rally of his RBR career so far.
Next up a round of the SAIRC before we move back to the RBR MF Cup Season 3.

15th September 2010, 19:39
Blimey - I'm very happy with this win. My huge amount of time practising with the 306 (before I even knew about this rally!) has proved to be important. The first two stages were the only ones where I won by a lot - after that it was much closer. Looking forward to the full championship now.

16th September 2010, 17:45
Cheers tannat and Bruce, I really put in an effort for this one and it's nice to see it paid off  And at least the two stages that put me back in the overall standings where ones I knew I had trouble with.
But I don't understand how you drive like that PS29. Fair dues, absolutely astounding times - especially Falstone!

16th September 2010, 19:33
Congrats to PS29 for winning this rally! I hope you can set similar times with WR car in future rallies.
I'm reasonably happy for my result as well with the limited testing I had. Putting PS29's times aside, the times for the rest of the field were quite close. I hope I can do some testing before the next SAIRC round, otherwise it could be difficult for me to get into top 5.

16th September 2010, 22:49
Congrats Ps29. Thought I might have been up there with this one but apparently not. It's been so long since I won :( Feeling lucky for this season though. Will see everyone in Monaco :) Is everyone else still using rbrsr ?

17th September 2010, 10:50
Is everyone else still using rbrsr ?
Yes. Is there an alternative?
Bruce D
17th September 2010, 11:30
Yeah there is from this season but you have to stick to either RSRBR cars downloaded from the site or RBR Czech cars. PS29 is the only one right now not on RSRBR but I don't see it being a problem.
pettersolberg29
17th September 2010, 11:54
Just to make sure, I used this car - http://forum.rallyesim.fr/viewtopic.php?f=92&t=42 - so if anyone wants to check just to make sure that this car isn't much faster than its equivalent on RSRBR then they are welcome.
Also, I'm using this car for the RBR championship - http://rbr.onlineracing.cz/index.php?act=download&cat=1075
52Paddy
17th September 2010, 13:13
I've no problem with people not using RSRBR. But I'm curious as to what program or method you use for submitting/recording times PS29? I wasn't aware of any other option.
Bruce D
17th September 2010, 15:17
Well he submits them manually. Let's face reality here, you could fiddle with those times just as easily, nothing is tamper proof.
Macd
18th September 2010, 02:07
I wasn't implying that he fiddled the times, just that there may be an advantage to using the mod that he did. If not then I apologise, but they are huge time differences.
Bruce D
18th September 2010, 10:21
Fair enough, but I was just ignoring it cos firstly we don't all usually drive these cars, and he had been driving them for a while, and what I meant was even the HTML submission system has 2 significant faults to it, one of which I'm convinced more than one person has used to their advantage but I can't prove it so I don't make a scene about it. Don't forget also in the first season PS29 did one rally and he won it and we were all on the same playing field there so he's not a slouch behind the wheel.
Another thing to keep in mind is that his individual stage time differences were not that great and I can think of a number of times during last season when guys like NeverKnow or Francis44 would suddenly pull a minute on everyone in 1 stage alone. Now the reason for that mostly is that they are very good drivers but also have very good setups. I've watched a few of the videos these guys post and I've got not even half the grip they do around corners, mostly cos I don't have the time to set up the car much. So if we start getting picky over who beats who by how much I could argue that you guys all cheat cos you set the cars up and we should all use standard setups! :p
Don't forget I'm also trying to keep this league going and attracting new competitors and most people don't have RSRBR and frankly it's damn annoying mod to have some times cos I don't even use half the cars in it and it's huge downloads every month. So if I can expand it by allowing people to use cars that are part of the mod without having the download it then thats fine. I mean, look at the entries from the first season. We changed to RSRBR-only and I think we have only 20% of the same guys here now.
pettersolberg29
18th September 2010, 12:16
Don't forget also in the first season PS29 did one rally and he won it and we were all on the same playing field there so he's not a slouch behind the wheel.

Thanks Bruce - glad you brought up that win again ;) You are right, the individual times were quite close.
Perhaps the 306 I used was just a rocket and might be better than the equivalent car in RSRBR, but as this is a fun event, it doesn't matter too much. Also, my practise with the 306 is much more than the amount of practise I have done with any other cars so it might just be pace.
I hope that me not using RSRBR will not be a problem for others. My times from the last round of the SAIRC were neither stunningly quick or slow which suggests that I have no advantage or disadvantage. If anyone doesn't believe me then I can just put up a reply on Youtube so you can have a butchers.
52Paddy
18th September 2010, 15:12
Like MacD, I was not implying that PS29 was cheating whatsoever. I was just interested in trying out a different program/method or playing in this league if there was one available. I'll stick with RSRBR though :)
I think it is good for the competition if we do open up entries outside RSRBR, certainly. And, having run these offline championships many times in the past, I am not one to point the finger at suspect times. There is nothing to be won here and we get on well as a community. Here's to the next round
