Labonte just wrecked in qualifying

10th March 2007, 00:09
Even if Bobby Labonte has to go to a back-up car he WILL make the race @ Las Vegas.
Bobby Labonte's Petty Enterprises #43 car was 21st in 2006 Owner's Points.
The Top 35 Rule assures Bobby Labonte a starting spot.

Looks like Micheal Waltrip will miss another race as he is the slowest of 40 cars so far !
There are still some Top 35 cars yet to go out to qualify, either way Michael goes home.

and Jarrett will have to use another past champions provisional

Kahne on the pole and Dodge in 6 of the top 7 spots (JMP 4th). I guess that answers, if the new nose is an improvement.

Robby's really running with no sponsorship. Looking at the paint schemes on Jayski, it looks like he had a Motorola deal that fell through.

I doubt it, he's had a 15th & 21st so far and he's the best of the single car teams, and he's probably still adapting to the Chevy/Ford switch.

Do Fox always cut away right after the checkers flies? would've been nice to get a finishing order.

That was a surprisingly good race considering all the pre-race talk about the track. Lots of lead changes and cars running different grooves. Its time Vegas got a second race at the expense of California.
Was gutted that Ol' Sterlings great run came to an end so late on. He deserved a top 10 and again showed how much the Ginn team has improved. One of these days Sterling will catch a break.

Nascar gave JJ that win

why was JJ not penalized on the his last stop, two tires rolled away, the crew only got one, and the nascar official was in another pit to get the other, while the tire was still 1/2 out of the pit box.

I hate to say it but Gordon should be given the win. Nascar favoritism again

He wasn't penalized because the tires didn't go out into the driving lanes of pit lane, which is the safety issue. Like you said crew member grabbed one, the other I didn't see, but it seemed to be by the pit wall where it wasn't a safety problem. The announcers mentioned the rule during an early round of pit stops, said tires need to stay on the inner half of pit boxes.

I saw that too and was perplexed. Clearly a 48 crew member was still in the neighbor pit box with a tire and nascar official.

I was under the assumption that all of your tires had to be in your own pit box when the car left.

I've been searching for a while but can't find the rule in writing. Good luck, right?

It would be great if someone could find it. Then we can accuse ;)

Agreed
F'ing NASCAR. They were quick to penalize him during the first half of the race when a penalty really doesn't count.
But they act like nothing happened the second time he has tires roll out of his box during the last pit stop when a penalty would actually mean something.
I was also rooting for Jeff Gordon like he was Tony Stewart after that happened.

It seems like Jimmie Johnson can't ever win a race without either the help of NASCAR or something from Chad's "Bag of Cheats".
Very rarely it seems like he wins a race without involvement/orchestration from NASCAR or without dabbling in the "Grey Area".
I guess NASCAR had to make it up to Jimmie this week after they screwed him with a debris caution at California (opposed to helping him with a debris caution like they did during the 2006 season)

the tire was caught by an official but he was way out of the pitwall and was definitly in the outerhalf of the pit box.

if the tire is outside the box that should be enough, pure BS

djarumdudley
12th March 2007, 07:13
the tire was outside Johnson's box, but was never a safety hazard. that is the purpose of the rule, safety. teams get penalized if they let a tire roll away and out into pit lane, into traffic. a tire can be punted back by cars and Nascar certainly doensn't want crew members chasing into traffic for a tire at any time. outside the box going towards traffic means a penalty. the tire on the first stop clearly got away and was headed into traffic regard less of whether the tire carrier caught up to it. in this case those tires were going towards the inside pit wall. there have been numerous times when a team will be changing tires and roll them back only to be stopped by the crew guys in the adjacent pit boxes. this happens routinely when the carrier is returning left side tires. this is also not a first where i've seen a Nascar official stop an errant tire heading towards the inner pit wall.

i'm not a Johnson fan, but this tire deal seems a stretch to me. if the team in the next box(think it was Rudd's, who was several laps down) were pitting simultaneously we wouldn't be discussing this. there wouldn't have been the extra room available to roll the tire. this is just a case of the team having more space to work with. look at stops in future races and similar occurences will happpen.

What a bunch of little whiners. The bunch of you want the race to be decided on bullspit little technicalities.

That's why I like European Football much more than American Football. In European Football, they let the players play the friggin game. With American Football, you've got a whole team of referees on the field looking at each and every little step and move each player makes, even to the point of stopping the game for 5 minutes to review a play. God save us if NASCAR ever gets to that point.

Hey, he qualified well, kept it off of the fence and had a decent finish. I think he did very well for a "rookie".

And remember, this week he was playing with the "big boys" again.

SOD,

The first three NNCS races of 2007 are set for prime-time (GMT-5, any time between 1900-2200 hours) finishes. The next prime-time race will be Avondale, AZ at the Subway Fresh and Fit 500k.

The pit box rule has always been inside half is legal, outside half isn't. The general rule is if it's within 2.5 metres of the pit wall, it's legal.

Robby still has his main sponsor as Fortune Brands for selected races, and I was surprised I didn't see any Fortune Brands products on the side of the car. (Two different Fortune products usually share space -- Moen Faucets and Jim Beam.)

NASCAR has an official in every pit box it seems iin some races to watch every pit stop, and he or she (yes, there are women officials) is there for the team assigned. That official has to protect the interests of the team, and in that instance, the official will protect the team he or she is assigned when a tire rolls through the pit wall in a legal position in that team's pit. There are some officials (with the fire-proof overalls and helmets) who are permitted to work over the pit wall. There are other officials (in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series Official shirts and trousers) who cannot be over the pit wall under a 2002 NASCAR directive.

Sometimes, it turns into gridiron Referee (offense), Umpire (defense), Head Linesman (at the line), and their respective judges who observe fouls during plays.

And oh, by the way, Lee Roy: JPM earned his 10 points for Raybestos Rookie of the Race.

Robby's running really good so far, 14th in the points, espesially since this is only their 3rd race ever in a Ford.

The blank paint scheme, black with neon green edges, was because Monster Energy Drinks was the planned sponsor, but they didn't get all of the contract done in time. Monster sponsors his offroad stuff, including Dakar, and all the #7 uniforms were Monster yesterday.

Great quote by Mears:

"It amazes me," Mears said. "Every time I think Robby can't do anything any more stupid than he's already done, he one-ups himself. It's so early in the race. The tires are one of the hardest tires to drive we've had all year. It's such a long race and he put us three-wide going into turn 1. It's ridiculous. He's trying to pull something off in the first, opening laps when it means nothing. I guess he's trying to be a hero."

Robby also banged Jimmie Johnson up a little late in the race. He's just nuts.
