I know this isn't strictly rally news but lets face it the Stratos is a piece of rallying history so I think it fits in ;)

As a fan of Italian cars and a lover of the original Stratos I really do like it, perhaps it's just a carbon copy of the Stratos with some modern bits added but when they got it soooo right the first time why play around with it?

The front looks a bit strange without popup headlights but the back is lovely

For once a story about someone extremely priviledged putting their wealth to good use! I'm a major Stratos fan, and whilst the new car is very similar as you say Daniel, it was so right the first time why muck around with the shape etc. Am glad the strange split windscreen seen on earlier mock ups has gone.

Well the split screen was always just a concept thing and they always like to throw in slightly strange things when it comes to concepts. One thing I think looked a bit nicer on the Fenomenon concept was the headlights which look a little small on this prototype IMHO :)

You're all gonna hate me, but I'm not that impressed. I didn't think the old stratos was that amazing to start with. The new one looks like a mix of other cars. From the front it's a Fiat Coupé, from the side it's a Toyota MR2 mk1 and from the back it's a new Corvette :p :

How much are they going to cost. Stratos's make me loose all sense of being sensible. I could sell my old house and blow it all on a Stratos...or I could just keep my old house and have a decent pension. Booooo!

It seems that the car was built for Michael Stoschek by his company Brose KG. If it's the same Micheal Stoschek, than he also drives historic rally events with Porsche 911.

Yes it is the same person

I still quite like the Fenomenon Stratos concept of 5 years ago though
- the split front windscreen I think it looks very nice but I have to say they've got the rear end absofrickinlutely perfect on the one that looks like it's going to go into production :facelick:
http://www.babez.de/2005/03/fenomemon-stratos/

Another thing that I've noticed is gone from the new one is the louvred rear window :( Also not quite sure I like the modern take on the coffin spoke wheels as much as I would like a carbon copy of the original

I have heard a lot of details about the car, what the protos are based on and suffice to say it does look like it's going to be a really good car and I'd be pretty annoyed if I'd put a deposit down on something like a 458 Italia :D

As a modern pastiche of the original, it's far more effective than the 'new' Beetle or Mini, that's for sure. But I'd far rather see a proper new design becoming as undeniably iconic (what an overused word) as the original Stratos.

Whilst I agree with you on the Beetle and Mini, if the original was so perfect then why should they change the bits that make the original so perfect? :) The Stratos still looks pretty futuristic which helps.

... which makes it more GT than WRC, sad to say. In this present age of pasenger car-related rally racing, especially with 4WD/AWD systems, this is a poor attempt to try to revive olden days.

Nostalgia is nice, but we all have to see things for what, and when, they are; charming period pieces.

Meant to mention as it's been made public now, that the proto is based on a 430 Scuderia

Daniel
18th August 2010, 10:34
Can't remember which site it was on but basically it says a few things I knew before. 1 that it's based on shortened 430 scuderia aluminium spaceframe, it's got a full carbon fibre body and the engine is a tuned version of that found in the 430 Scud. Considering that the 430 scuderia is no slowcoach this has the potential to be bloody fast and fricking expensive.

http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evocarreviews/210200/ferrari_430_scuderia.html

There's your yardstick, now think how much lighter it'll be with a full carbon fiber body (the scuderia only has cf doors) and a bit of the wheelbase chopped out then think how much quicker it's going to be with that considered plus a bit of extra power? ;)

Which is why many GT cars use heavily restricted engines with LESS power than the showroom variant

I highly doubt the Aston DB9 and road Maserati MC12 have under 400bhp
I also doubt GT1 regulations require a limit of only 400bhp

Mirek, GT1 cars from track have 600 bhp, regulamented. GT2 cars have 450-500 bhp, and the GT3 have 500 bhp!

I don't know why FIA limited the GT rally cars to 400bhp! For example, the Porsche 997 GT3 from Team Beta here in Portugal have 420 bhp, and the Vallejo one should have even more!!!

It looks fine but then that was not hard... this trend in using motoring icons as a template rather than being cutting edge like the Icons they emulate were, is rather disappointing... it's lazy.

But it a popular band wagon at the moment, why critique Lancia for leaping on it, it will be in good company.

What should a new Stratos look like though? Its so unique that its successor should look just like it. I own a Fiat 500 and if it didn't look like the original it wouldn't be a 500. I don't like the Mini because IMHO in some ways it's too true to the original (to its detriment) and in some ways it's far too different.

That is the nut of it right? How much evolution is too much? The Mini and the latest 500 like yours do strike the right chord with me.....just like the Dodge Challenger and Ford Mustang give you that 60's appearance but they are clearly modern versions. The Stratos to me didn't change AT all in the modern version....

I'm not trying to say that you're not a car person ;)

I was merely saying that if you got my nephew who is 2 in a few days and he grew up never seeing a Stratos and then you asked him in 20 years time when the original Stratos was made then I think he'd struggle to say when.

The fact is a Stratos is a Stratos. The new one is different in some minor ways but it is in my mind what Bertone would have done back in the day given the ability to build in modern materials.

To me some things are too perfect to be tampered with.

I remember 2008 Rally Costa Brava when there was a record of 7 Lancia Stratos on the Entry List, including Sandro Munari in the Alitalia ex-works car!

I recommend you to attend this kind a FIA Historic rally if you want to see an old Stratos in action and in real competition in a real rally (not regularity or short rally for showing cars). In 2010 the rally included one Stratos and two 037 for the first time allowed in the FIA Class, all included in FIA Sport category and it was so funny, Bianchini won the event in his Lancia 037.

Why are they getting Peter Mandelson to promote the car?

Lovely car but so much power in such a short wheelbase is going to be a handful...

What I want to see from Lancia though is for them to bring the new Fulvia concept to market. At least I could afford that.

New Stratos (http://www.new-stratos.com/en/#/article/a15)

Seems in typical Ferrari fashion they don't want something which is potentially better than their products being built. Gotta love that...... what a bunch of c words.

Completely unsurprising though, and utterly predictable!!

There was a time when the FIAT group had more than one World Motorsport outlet: Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Ferrari, etc in Rallying, Touring cars, DTM, WSC, F1. Now it's just Ferrari in F1....and that also makes me angry....and another reason why I dislike Ferrari.

You absolutely got the point... this is one of the reasons why I dislike FIAT...

No, but it seems all resources are required for Ferrari....it hasn't always been like that.

i think its normal....you put the resources on the one thing that sells the most and currently the biggest flock of sheep is the oversized cart championship one....
