View Full Version : WHY IS THIS WEBSITE LEAVING TRACKING COOKIES ON MY COMPUTER and then giving pop up ads based on the tracking??

Is that not some violation of privacy??

I finally figured out that this site is depositing tracking cookies and then finding other websites visited and up pop certain ads upon the return visit....like right now, an ad for mortgages....

INCREDIBLE --- I had no f***ing idea!!!

Everytime before you visit this site, be sure to scan and clean your computer and then after you leave, be sure to do the same!!!!

Took me a while, but figured it out by a scan and clean before a visit, then a check right before the visit, and then during the visit, up she pops, the same little tracking cookie, but lacking the ability to put up the ads based on where I have been....erase it and yet it does not affect the sign on cookie, and then after leaving, there is that little tracker again, so I did some asking of those in the know..can only be from here.....oh my....never would have thought it, mark

Why? To keep it free, I guess.

Well I certainly have NOT installed anything of that nature. We do have google adverbs which might be the culprit but that is not coming from this site. The forums do desposit cookies but they are used for the sole purpose of automatically logging you in.

I've never had a single pop up advert from this forum. :)

I love the disdirected angry reaction before you've found the cause of the trouble. Interesting way of doing things. :erm:

Anyway, sounds more like you've picked up some malware from somewhere, as Mark says the only thing I've ever found on this forum is bog-standard cookies and harmless Google Ads. If you're finding anything more sinister I'd advise a full scan of your system.

As Dave says it sounds like you have something else on your computer that is adding this functionality. If not hidden malware, maybe some browser add-on or toolbar.

I'm certainly not seeing pop-up ads or anything like the behavior you say you are experiencing.

If you're a complete nerd and want to go through 4000+ lines of source code for this page, you can see for yourself that there's nothing which would lead to popups.

Maybe "those in the know" referenced in the original post would like to double check?

I told you to stop visiting those dodgy porn sites, markabilly. But you wouldn't listen to me, would ya?! :p :

Nope. they must be right.....I did not clean the slate after visiting here, as i did for several days and visited another site (mortgage company), and come back here and up shows the ad... (as a banner ad appearing at either the top or bottom of the website page, not a seperate pop-up)--- mortgage ads FROM ONE OF THE VERY COMPANIES WE been visiting

Played around and found that other site is not putting tracking cookies on my computer, but the trackers are coming from this site....and working pretty good, I might add...

as to the sign in cookie, that is NOT the source.....it is the other being deposited from here, no other explanation I can find...

Even more of a hoot, I posted thread about the new Mustang, and I get those ads here as banners on the web page as well....when I do not clean....never figured it....

I wish as dodgy porn is more fun

maybe it is your google stuff doing it on you, but it comes from visiting here

is it a popup or banner ad? Google will look at your cookies and give targeted adverts. For instance a couple of weeks ago I was looking at pressure washers and pc components and shortly after than I got very specifically targeted ads on various sites for the exact products I was loking at.

I think there seems to be some confusion between banner adds and pop ups. :) Im currently getting banner adds for Jaguar, car insurance and help manageing my debt. By my reckoning the forum thinks that I will be in debt if I buy and insure a Jaguar. The forum is probably right if I went for a supercharged one. :p

I only spent a grand though. It might put me off buying a new phone for a month but I dont quite need debt consolidation. Mark, these accusations that those forum ads are making are quite frankly scandalous and I am mortally offended. Please remove those google adverts at once! :p

what i am getting is those banner ads at the top and bottom of this webpage that is part of the web page

It is not a pop up ad (poor choice of words I used)

I vaguely remember something about stuff with google chrome and the FTC and some stuff...that put me off on google...don't remember details...

But I do not like what is going on  no sir

see what I say above...i think that should be illegal

And it may happen with other websites, but my problem is clearly coming from here, cause when i clean after leaving here, the stuff does not follow me around

Banner ads are what keeps this web site free.

As far as I know google does indeed track you to an extent. If you visit another site with google adverts it will recognise when you come here that you are the same person and serve you ads accordingly. This is just what google does and has been doing for years. I don't have access to any of this data.

Googles Adsense is extremely wide-spread on the Internet and the functionality on this site is no different than any other.

Google have lots of information on-line about the system. Maybe try clicking the link 'Ads by Google' below an ad or try this:

btw, you can opt-out of interest based ads if you follow the link to 'Ads Preference Manager'.

Google are a bunch of sneaky *****s which is why I am only slightly more likely to buy an Android phone than an iPhone and there's no way I'm buying an iPhone.

Here's another "shocker", markabilly... once you apply for that mortgage, you're going to begin receiving mailers and flyers in the mail for all variety of financial service products: life insurance, credit cards, home equity loans, debt consolidation loans, auto loans, etc. Wonder how they do that? ;)

Most Americans have no idea who or what Experian and Acxiom are. But Experian and Acxiom know exactly who and what most Americans are. These two companies assemble not just financial information on us, but also lifestyle data. Other than God, I doubt there's any single entity that knows as much about individual Americans as either of these two companies. If you're divorced, have two kids, a dog, have a degree in marketing, make $75K per year, own 2 cars, live in a condo in Venice Beach and have two DUI's on your record, there's a very good chance that one or both of these companies has the goods on you. But the data is not always accurate. As identity theft has grown, more than a few people are finding that they can't get certain types of jobs or they're denied credit based on inaccurate information.

I (and you) can block tracking cookies. But there's nothing I (or you) can do about Experian and Acxiom. And before someone introduces politics, as often happens in almost every thread here, neither political party in the U.S. is doing a damn thing about this! Both parties love to get in our business! Because I'm an NRA Life member, every election season I get Republican candidates calling me like I'm a hooker giving away free #####.

You're already nothing but a number, markabilly... you just didn't know it yet. When you're ready to get your forehead tattoo (666 is already taken), let me know. I can get you a discount down at Big Nate's Tattoo Parlor & Nail Salon. Big Nate is actually a 40 year old Filipina woman, but that's a whole 'nother story. :dozey:
