The Renault is about 2 seconds a lap faster than the Vauxhall here :(

I'm glad I don't have the Peageot though. That thing is about 3mph slower round the back of the circuit than the Renault :p

Finished my races in the Volvo. Not a bad car by any standards. My setup was: long 6th gear, +3 downforce, suspension default (stiff susp. creates problems at the final chicane).

Race 1 went well right up until the very last bend. I lost a second on lap 3 by slightly wide onto the gravel at turn 2. That meant cars were up my arse for the remainder of the race. Running 5th into the last corner, David Leslie hit my backside and forced me into the barriers, dropping me way down the order and costing me about 7 or 8 seconds.

Race 2 was fairly OK. I only managed 12th on the grid in quali after I ran off in the session. Any chances of finishing in a good race position were ruined from the beginning. Into turn 3, an Audi spun in front of me. I took to the grass in avoiding action and, although I only lost a few seconds, the field had got away up the road. So, I settled in position and managed to punch in consistent lap times. Unfortunately, it was a sour end. On the final lap, I was pushing for a new personal best (or at least somewhere to equal the one I set) and I ended up getting sideways and spinning off. I lost around 5 seconds.

But, nonetheless, it was a good race and I hope I've not fared too badly against the competition.

I think this is the way to go at all venues.

I think the game has the effect of zero downforce a bit lopsided (those wings were quite small), but what can you do...

Perhaps someone could explain the effect of low, medium and full downforce at contrasting venues?

I was under the illusion that it is related to ride height and aerodynamics. So a car with high downforce would be "low to the ground" and, on flat, fast tracks like Thruxton, this seemed to be the obvious choice. But I could have the wrong idea about this entirely.

I think for this game high downforce means maximum downforce possible, so think 180 degrees from your above statement.

Paddy-I'd recommend using no ( very very low) downforce at all for this circuit. Feel free to resubmit your times if you wish.

Three sets of times received thus far, and I will do my runs tonight.

It was a weekend of mixed results for the opening round of the TOCA2 championship at a sunny Thruxton. The qualifying session was all Jon Brown as his time of 1:07.17 blitzed the rest of the field by over a second, followed by #1JTFan in the Ford. The race was a different story as it appears (?) the Vauxhall driver was impeded on his way to the checker, taken first by #1JTFan in the Mondeo with Tannat in the Peugeot barely nicking second. Third fell to Jon Brown with the Volvo of Paddy52 fourth and IronRooster taking fifth in the Nissan. Fast lap honors for the race fell to John Brown with a 1:08.34.

http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh15/tannatmadiran/Round1race1.jpg

Race two qualifying was all Jon Brown again, setting a 1:07.11 mark with Tannat qualifying second at 1:09.89. Paddy52 suffered a spin on his qualifier to take last spot on the grid. The race went Jon Brown’s way this time and he took nearly a ten second win over the Ford of #1JTFan. Tannat took third from Paddy52 by less than two seconds and Iron Rooster rounded out the field in 5th. Fast lap honors went to Jon Brown with a 1:07.74.

Next round Race 3 and 4 Silverstone July 5-11.

See you there!

I had a spin on lap 4. Coming up to the complex I lost the unforgiving Vectra under braking, costing me about 15 seconds.

For race 2 I took a more steady pace so I made fewer mistakes. Pleased with the victory and the pace I had.

Sorry I couldn't make this one, I spent last Monday evening visiting friends and left for Glastonbury on the Tuesday night. I'll hopefully be able to get involved in the next one, although I'm going to France on the Wednesday evening so limited time wise again :( Unfortunately the Championship has kicked off just as I have a bunch of time away :)

Close results. Fairly satisfied with my pair of 4th places and how my laptimes compare to the rest of the field, especially with a setup that was probably unsuitable (not making excuses though!).

I'm looking forward to round 2. Silverstone is a track that everybody knows but the Audi is the car I'm least familiar with.

Myself ( and I am sure just about anyone else participating) will be happy to give you setup tips, IronRooster.

If you are on a PC and it is older you might experience slower lap times due to your computer speed. I've experiecne this with Colin McRae Rally 2.

For this track I used a very soft suspension (better to take the curbing) and no down force. I was seeing 148, 149 mph at times on the back straight.

being as fast as possible through the chicane just before the start finish really contributes to a good lap time...

One of the others migth jump in and add a few tips.

MrMetro
29th June 2010, 21:14
thanks tannat, i have the ps1 version. my slower lap times are most likely due to not playing toca 2 for a while, so hopefully as the championship progresses on, I will get the 'feeling' back with the cars.

MrJan
29th June 2010, 21:15
Rooster wait until I start getting involved :D Thruxton is probably my best track and I've missed it, Silverstone is my second best and I still might miss that and the other tracks I've never quite got to grips with in the same way. Ignore Jon Brown's times too, he's some sort of TOCA2 freak of nature :p : :D

52Paddy

so hopefully as the championship progresses on, I will get the 'feeling' back with the cars.

There is no doubt that you will improve all the time if you stick with it. One thing I always remember (this is particularly important at fast tracks) is that: you loose more time with a spin or crash, than you do by taking it a little easier. I've still to get the hang of "curbing my limits" on RBR and I find the races/rallies were I just get through unscathed, award me with the best overall results. Consistent times are much better than one fast lap among many bad ones.

In relation to setup, I'm still only learning this myself. But a full 6th gear seems the choice for all tracks.

Tannat, I was only hitting 146/147 on the straights, possibly because I screwed up my downforce levels.

MrJan

Tannat, I was only hitting 146/147 on the straights, possibly because I screwed up my downforce levels.

147 is standard for a long 6th gear and no change to downforce. Thruxton is definitely a low downforce track as you can hit 148/149 which can really help along the back straight, makes Goodwood a tricky corner though which is probably where the softened suspension comes in to lend a hand

It doesn't look as if it was hurting you much at all.....

Brown, Jon Brow

My set-up;

70/30 brake bias in favour of the fronts. The Vectra, 406 and Mondeo need brake bias moved forwards or they are very nervous.

Zero dowforce - if you want to set the fastest time you need low dowforce, can be very tricky in the rain and on fast corners but the fastest car is always the twitchy car.

High gear ratios - I use this at all the tracks. Combined with zero dowforce I got the Vectra up to 149mph. The Laguna can go 150+mph here.

Suspension - i kept it standard here but it is not something I have really experimented with. I think having softer rear suspension to the front can reduce oversteer but to be honest I can't really tell much difference.

I have lapped in the 1:05's in the Laguna around here but i find Thruxton quite boring. You are flat for 95% of the lap.

Great link. Bring back memories of the high points in sim racing on this forum :)

I realise now that, although I considerably improved as the season drew on, my form was usually quite bad in the 05 series. I thought I scored a podium somewhere but no. My best result was 5th and at my home race funnily enough (A version of the Test track was used to mimmick Mondello Park).

I just broke my brothers lap-record that has stood for 10 years around here.

A 1:04.8x in the Laguna.

The key is to find the straightest possible line through the last chicane and carry lots of speed (i think i was about 120mph through here). Lots of curbing is needed. I also had rock hard suspension.

Thats quite a time, Jon. Do you have a wheel?

I need to get my analog wingpad set up properly. Too difficult to thumbpad through that chicane without spinning..

MrJan
4th July 2010, 14:22
I still use the old fashioned D-pad for TOCA. I learnt how to drive the game using that so even using the analog sticks feels weird. Sub 1:05 is crazy, we may have to start giving Jon success ballast

Brown, Jon Brow
4th July 2010, 14:51
I'm using the D-pad. I have the analog stick pad but the sticks are not very comfortable to use. In fact after years of playing with an X-box pad I find the playstation pads far too small for my pianist fingers.

I did have a madcatz wheel, but I was never as fast with that as I was with a control pad. I did love the sequential gear shift it had. Sadly the 'throttle linkage' (accelerator pedal spring) broke during the rally of Greece on Colin McRae 2 a few years back :(
