View Full Version : F1 2010 under the F1 2009 points system

If we were still using the old points system, we'd be literally creaming ourselves with excitement as to how close the top 8 are, plus looking at it, the smaller teams will be a bit relieved the new top 10 system is in place because of the 56 points positions available over the 7 races, the top 5 teams would have accounted for 51 of them.

It's alright, I'm already creaming myself at how close it all is with the new system: we've already seen how it can all change in 1 race, and how large looking gaps are anything but.

In addition I'll add points with 10-6-4-3-2-1 system. :p : And even then the championship is quite close.

1 Webber - 30
2 Button - 28
3 Vettel - 24
4 Hamilton - 24
5 Alonso - 23
6 Kubica - 16
7 Massa - 14
8 Rosberg - 14
9 Schumacher - 7
10 Sutil - 2

1 Red Bull - 54
2 McLaren - 52
3 Ferrari - 37
4 Mercedes - 21
5 Renault - 16
6 Force India - 2

Only 10 drivers have finished in the points. From what I have gathered from the past, the smallest number of Top6 finishers during a season has been 16 (1996, 2000, 2004, 2006). Will 2010 create such an all-time negative record in this area as I don't think many drivers outside that current ten are capable of finishing in Top6 without attrition?

Wow, tight is RIGHT

Thanks DazzlaF1 for putting that up there, that's good stuff.

Yep 16 is the record low compared to the record high (in the modern era) of 29 drivers and an astonishing 16 constructors scoring points in the 1989 season (thats when we had the record entry of 39 cars).

And that is worrying, it shows in a way just how far ahead those 5 teams are, how far reliability has improved in the last 20-25 years and why the new points system was needed in the first place.

It's still close even now. It's very difficult when all these years we've been used to 10 points being the race by race margin.

01 Mark Webber 93 02 Jenson Button 88 03 Lewis Hamilton 84 04 Fernando Alonso 79 05 Sebastian Vettel 78 06 Robert Kubica 67 07 Felipe Massa 67 08 Nico Rosberg 66 09 Michael Schumacher 34 10 Adrian Sutil 22

It may make it easier to understand the *current* standings if we convert the points directly to be proportional to the old system, i.e. by dividing by 2.5 which gives.

01 Mark Webber 37.2
02 Jenson Button 35.2
03 Lewis Hamilton 33.6
04 Fernando Alonso 31.6
05 Sebastian Vettel 31.2
06 Robert Kubica 26.8
07 Felipe Massa 26.8
08 Nico Rosberg 26.4
09 Michael Schumacher 13.6
10 Adrian Sutil 8.8

So even in the current table there's still only one point between 1st and 2nd place. It's going to be an interesting fight this year. Although McLaren's current place in the table can largely be attributed to Red Bull shooting themselves in the foot on a regular basis. McLaren can't expect them to keep doing so!

I'd say this is pretty much why the new system was necessary. Cars are way too reliable these days, another reason to get rid of freezes, rev limits and what have you, I want to see the machinery being pushed to the limit and occasionally going pop again.

we should have turbos return: I'm sure reliability would be a huge factor then!
