Anyone have a neglected four wheel (or two wheel) project in their garage?

I was able to spend a few moments with my beloved E21 BMW 3 series (late seventies-early eighties) this afternoon.

Its hardly a car that will stir your soul, but the thoughts of what I want it to be...

And the past history. Track days at Road Atlanta, Hallett, and Memphis Motorsports Park...

<SIGH> perhaps I need to reorder my priorities....

- '62 Chevy stepside pickup with a 283 setting beside it, waiting to be rebuilt

- 5.3 liter Jaguar V12 engine, waiting to be rebuilt

- Mazda RX-7, waiting for a paintjob and a rollcage to be installed... and a 12a waiting to be street-ported.

- Subaru EJ20 turbo, waiting for someone (me) to save enough money for some Cosworth internals, a bigger turbo and a front mount intercooler.

If I'd stayed away from women, cars and guns over the years, I'd likely have enough stashed away to retire by now. :(

2 Escort RS Cosworths sitting quietly in the garage awaiting some work, mostly cosmetic stuff and 1 mk III Ford Capri sitting in the yard waiting to be tidied up and registered. These chores will be accomplished soon when I retire....................

After my ex retired from racing we had a MG TF we started to restore. Then we moved a couple of times and gave up our former race shop. Car got stored in garages that had no where to work. Finally gave up and sold it.

Rx7's are too much fun....I had an 85 and It still is my favourite car I have ever owned. My dad had a 89 and it was faster and handled even better, but it didn't have the style and soul of the original. What model you have?

Very clean RX-7.

They're usually in a poor state when given to some punk kids who use them to "drift" around their neighborhood cul-de-sacs.
I'm glad you have your rotary beast in tip top.

I think the kids couldn't afford that version of the beast...what killed them was the cost, and the turbo rotary wasn't as bullet proof as the early editions of the old car....

He recently found out that it had some racing history after we saw the same car in Jaguar Enthusiast magazine. It has been converted from its original roadster form to a coupe.

Not sure if Caroline's Subaru counts but here it is

http://members.iinet.net.au/~fenix1983/Files/Subaru/Subaru2.jpg

It's a Mk1 Series 2 Legacy Turbo

It's going in on Thursday to get the whole front end rebushed with polyurethane bushes, new rack ends, new tie rod ends, new ball joints, front discs and pads, some bits in the gearshift assembly as well as some stainless steel braided brake lines. So come Thursday afternoon it should steer and stop better than it did when it came out of the showroom 16 years ago.

http://i47.tinypic.com/2cq051d.jpg

I've also got a set of nice gold speedlines which are going to get refurbished at some time in the near future

http://i45.tinypic.com/33d8tvp.jpg

Now to replace the suspension, get the little bits of rust cut out, do the bushes on the rear, get 2 drivers side doors, 2 wings and a respray and it'll be perfect :dozey:

That seems a lot of effort to put into a car that isn't particually cool or desirable.

I don't have project although my brother does have a stripped out, rolled caged 1997 Saxo which he bought for he sole purpose of taking it to Nurburgring his summer. By all accounts it could probably have beaten his Civic Type R before he sold it but it won't beat his S2000. Big waste of money if you ask me but he seems happy enough messing with it.

However much money you spent on your ST seems like a lot of money to spend on something which isn't cool and which is just a shopping trolley with stripes and a bigger engine ;)

Whilst I wouldn't strip out and cage a Saxo I can understand where your brother is coming from. There's something satisfying about making something as good as it can be or at the very least a heck of a lot better.

At the end of the day it's all down to personal preference. A lot of people especially on the rally forum will probably like it if they lived through the Group A period :)

Before that car came along Subaru's were slow and basically just driven by farmers. The Legacy RS changed all of that and later gave birth to the Impreza which is just the Legacy floorpan with a slightly shorter wheelbase and some different body panels

It gave Subaru their first win in the WRC

Daniel, I don't know why you persist in calling my car an oversized shopping trolly in the hope that it will annoy me because I think my car is the bees knees. I never bought my car for it's performance abilities, I bought it because I quite liked it's looks for the price. If it had come with a smaller engine it would have suited me better. I know full well it's the worst car in it's class and is a jumed up go kart but I didn't buy it because it was good or cool but because I liked it and can afford the 38mpg to run it. :) I've never bought any car I've owed because it was good or cool, I just buy cars I like the look of. It's just a girl thing and men shouldn't try and fathom the logic of it because you never will. :p

You still can't sell me on the Legacy even after watching the video's. Mind you, I would take the Legacy over the 500 everytime given the choice. Like you say, it's all a matter of personal tastes. :p :)

You're the one that made the blanket statement that the Legacy is neither cool nor desirable non?

I could easily afford to run the Subaru with it's ~25mpg thirst and did for about 6 months last year but I don't see the point. It was probably an extra £100 a month just to drive a car which was better at overtaking and doing 70 all the way home.

People don't drive small engined cars because they're poor, they drive them because they've got better things to do than to send silly amount of money to Shell and BP for little gain.

At the end of the day if you can't understand if someone would polybush their front end, put stainless steel brakelines on etc etc then perhaps this isn't the thread for you? :mark: You seem happy to spend extra money to drive around in something just because you could get a stripe with it yet you don't understand why someone would spend money on making their car more enjoyable for themselves?

It's not really a big project but after he got it he needed to respray the cycle wings and also fitted a different engine. He largely uses it for driving to Italy so beefed up to a 1275cc A series with a Sierra 5 speed 'box which makes it less scary on motorways and generally more useable for touring. My parents will be off around Europe in it in a few weeks and we'll also be heading down to the Le Mans Classic in it in July.

Before that he had a little Austin 7 Special which was great fun. At the insistence of my brother it had a straight through exhaust so made a fantastic noise but topped out at about 55mph. We fully stripped this one back, took the engine out to try and cure an oil leak and did a DIY respray. It was a sad day when he had to sell it:

Sure it's not what you like, but I don't like Jag Warrior's Jag, but you don't see me going "Why would you bother?" "it's not cool or desirable" or something similar?

How did I get drug into this? :D

Actually the 5.3 V12 isn't a car, it's just an engine that I bought years ago. The original 5.3 in the XJS runs just fine (last time I started it anyway). Gran Turismo Jaguar was going to build the 5.3 that I bought into a 6 liter+ fire breathing monster with about 600 horsepower, mated to a 6 speed tranny. Luckily they went out of business before I gave them the go and ended up going broke on that project.

I was still in Work Hard & Party Harder mode when I bought the XJS roughly 20 years ago. And as best I can recall (memories of many of my "back in the day" weekends are a bit foggy for various reasons ;) ), the old XJS was quite cool and desirable in its (our?) day. When a hot girl ignored you IN the bar, but let you take her home when she saw your car OUTSIDE the bar, it instantly passed the cool & desirable test in my book. :) Hey, I didn't say that I was anything BUT superficial and opportunistic back in those days. :p :

It's not a "project car"(yet), but I like the looks of my XJS - I've always liked them. I like the looks of my '05 XK8 too, but I don't like the newer XK's (post 2005 I believe is when they put the Mazda face on them). I don't like what they've done to the new XJ(8) either. And the XF looks like a (really nice) Volvo to me. Nothing at all wrong with Volvos, but that's not what a Jaguar should look like, IMO.

I used to post on tuner boards where guys with Evos and tarted up Hondas would slag on WRX's and STI's. And a guy on another board I'm on now bashes Jags and BMW's constantly (and anything else that's not a Porsche... including Ferraris). It's all good to me. Just part of the game of promoting the marques that are our favorites... and ribbing those that aren't.

Evos suck, BTW.

Yeh, seems pointless.

Better off getting a 106 Rallye and do that up unless he wants trackday kudos/PH stickers for sticking in bigger engine, convert to RWD

Daniel

But a saxo is cheaper and has the same chassis. Personally I'd just get a 106 rallye and keep it standard but that's just me.

GridGirl
25th May 2010, 18:45
The Saxo was already roll caged and tuned up in the most part by it's previous owner. It has also featured it some car magazine too. He got it for £1400 including a set of dry and wet weather tyres. For the speed it can go and the upgraded bits it has on it I suppose he got a bargain. It would cost alot more to start from scratch. I think the sensible part of him bought the Saxo because it cost next to nothing. The petrol head in him would much rather use his S2000 on his Nurburgring jolly. I have no idea what he's going to do with it after Nurburgring to be honest as it's not exactly a keeper. :s

Anyhoo back on topic, what stuff have you done to your Impreza? I notice you mentioned brakes, suspension and engine on the other thread :)

I really should have said exhaust rather than engine. Other than a Cobb AccessPort EM unit, set to Stage 2, and a K&N filter I haven't touched the engine internals (yet ;) ). I have to change the timing belt and spark plugs very shortly, so now would be the time to install larger injectors, a larger turbo, intercooler and higher flowing fuel pump. On the exhaust side, I've installed a larger Perrin stainless (catless) downpipe and up-pipe, along with a 3" stainless Borla exhaust. I was going to put headers on it, but I learned that unless you run at very high RPM's, headers on this application actually harm mid-range performance.

Suspension: Prodrive springs that lower the car about 1.3" (I believe). Larger front & rear sway bars. Polyurethane bushings throughout. Carbon fiber front strut tower brace. I ordered the car with a factory short-shift kit. When it's time to replace the shocks, I'll probably go with Tokico adjustables - but not coilovers. I have the adjustable Tokicos on the RX7 race car and I like them.

Brakes: DBA drilled & slotted rotors (front), Hawk brake pads all around and Goodridge stainless lines - gotta have those.

With the pro tune and the Stage 2 setting, we estimate that I'm just shy of 300 horsepower (not quite in STI Land, but almost). With the bigger turbo, fuel pump and injectors, I'd set the Accessport EM to Stage 3 (further upping the boost) and probably shoot for 350-375 horsepower - we're talking 2.0 liters on pump gas. :s mokin:

The only bad thing I've done so far is make a TERRIBLE tire choice recently. I chose Kumhos and should have stuck with the Falkens that had proven themselves so sound (and sticky). The Kumhos have a frightening amount of sidewall flex during off-camber cornering. Tires and then (lighter) wheels are the #1 thing that you can do to improve (or worsen) your handling.

Reading over what you're doing to the Legacy is exactly what I would do. It creates what we call a "sleeper" over here: a car that doesn't look like it will beat the paint off of a 3 series Bimmer or whatever, BUT IT WILL! You can't beat having a turbo AWD in an affordable package... that can be upgraded without breaking the bank. I love Subies now!

And don't forget, Evos suck! Spread the word.

Which ones did you have, Jan? Unless you were really leaning on the loud pedal, that's not much life for a non-track tire (although I have a buddy with a Vette who went through a set of tires in 5K miles). I replaced the awful Bridgerock Potenza all season tires that my car came with for Falken all season tires... ZE 512's I think they were. I've had two sets and both lasted to over 20K miles.

What I need is another set of wheels so I can mount some performance summer tires. Ya know, next month is my 10 year anniversary here. Sure would be nice if you guys & gals would get together and buy me a set of wheels and tires. 18" BBS or OZ lightweight wheels with some sticky Pirellis or Dunlops would be nice. Jag - Dunno what they were. I'm a fairly aggressive driver but I wasn't doing burnouts all the time. Since then I've had some slightly cheaper rubber put on the rear and it seems much better, albeit slightly less grip when I push it. The Falkens meant that I could be confident, even in the wet, the new ones will step out if I push them but generally only slightly and in certain conditions.

Not tyres, Goodridge stainless steel braided brake lines

http://www.greghome.com/images/Maxima%20Pics/Modifications/Handling%20Mods/Braking%20Mods/SSLines/GoodridgeLinesKit.jpg

Basically standard rubber lines bulge when you apply pedal pressure and stainless lines don't and that means more pressure on the pads :)

Caroline's car has Falken ZE512's on the front and I have to say I'm not keen on them at all. When it got two Continental Premium Contact's put on the front the steering was much better than it is now, I put the Falken's on the front after a couple of miles and the steering was a lot more numb.

Strangely enough I really like the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A's on my Fiat. In terms of lateral grip they're fantastic and a lot more than the suspension can cope with. When it's cool and even the slightest bit wet it's suprisingly easy to get wheelspin out of them which I suspect is more down to the fact that they're so wide for such a light car (865 kg's). The subaru's tyres are only 10mm wider and it's a whole 500kg's heavier!

Interesting stuff :)

You certainly know your stuff. I was going to reccomend whiteline, cusco, perrin and kartboy stuff but I suspect you've probably already got a lot of their stuff on. Pictures of your car and some of the bits would be nice!

Jag,

You should keep an eye on Ebay for some nice wheels. Get some nice speedlines in 17" or 18" flavour and put them on

Yeah, I did lots of research before I bought the first part. And I'm really happy with the results. I really do like this car. Except for the horrible tire choice I just made, it's a pleasure to drive... especially on twisty roads.

It's funny that the pictures I have were taken from an ex-girlfriend's camera... and we broke up because of my car obsession. :rotflmao:

She took some really cool pics of the XK8 that summer too. But since we're no longer on speaking terms, there's little chance she'd send them to me. Course, I still have some pictures of her too. ;)

Girl posing by her Corvette and her top falls off.
Girl posing on hood of her Corvette... where are her clothes? Maybe I can broker an even swap before I decide to post those somewhere. Either that or I just need to buy a digital camera and take my own damn pictures!

It's an '04, so about 2 years old in those pics. For the first couple of years that I had it, I was working out of state quite a bit, so I seldom drove it. I like the 04/05 bodystyle, along with the 02/03 "bug eye" (the first WRX's that we got here). I don't like the looks of any of the WRX/STI's made after '05. I think Subaru and Jaguar got together and decided to start making cars that I wouldn't like after 2005. Plus mine has the "proper" (WRC) 2 liter turbo, not the 2.5 that they're putting in the WRX and STI now.

Subarus have good reliability record. So I wouldn't be afraid to put some money in that Legacy or an older WRX. What you could sell it for doesn't matter as much as how much you'll enjoy driving it after you're done... and it'll probably last another 7 or 8 years.

She had a C5 Vette. I've never been a HUGE Corvette fan, but it really was a nice car. IMO, they are about the best sports cars for the money you can buy. Hers was stock and it had big power, good brakes and cornered like crazy. And then one night she had too much tequilla, danced on the hood and cracked it - even though I wasn't drinking and it was HER tequilla, somehow that was my fault.

Her car was nice. And she was fun to go to races and car shows with. But as I eventually came to realize, she was crazy (and not crazy in a funny kind of way... I mean like bipolar/schizophrenic crazy or something). And she certainly was NOT camera shy.
