View Full Version : Just for Fun, 2010 Nationwide Standings using F1 scoring

This list will be just the top 10 only, but I do have 34 drivers with points scored already. Same tie breakers apply as in my Cup standings. Doing this list really bears out one fatal flaw in the FIA system, and the reason why the Latford system came into being in the first place. Unless you can win most of the races, theres no reward for showing up every week....Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman have only raced 1 time apiece, and are p61 and p64, respectively, in real life.
In this system they would be p12 and p15 respectively. Denny Hamlin would be in the TOP 10 and has only shown up for 3 of the 11 races so far!!!!!!

That's just it...that's where you and I fundamentally disagree; there should not be a reward for showing up every week, you should have to perform on the racetrack to earn your points. I know that NASCAR agrees with you on this, but that doesn't make them right, it's their sandbox and they can do what they choose. It is true that Denny Hamlin is in the top-10 in nationwide after only showing up to 3 races, but he earned 43 points in those 3 races, it's not his fault that the depth of the nationwide series is weak...the full time nationwide teams and drivers need to step it up, period. Even so, there is NO CHANCE for Hamlin to win the championship, he is 117 points behind Kyle Busch, which under this system is equivalent to 5 races behind. Even with the weak nationwide field, it's still a good system IMO.

Point is, if NASCAR ever decided to implement this in the Cup series, it would allow teams to cherry pick the races they felt like showing up too, and maybe sittin out the Dover's and the Kansas's that they might or road courses that they're not so good at, and we'd be right back to 1971 again where every driver wouldn't be at every race, and who wants to see a race that doesn't have Gordon, Harvick, Johnson, Shrub and Junebug in it (I hear crickets chirping)

Ah...I hear this argument all the time, but that's where the SPONSORS come in...if the sponsor pays for you to be in that car for 35-36 races, you WILL be in that car for 35-36 races, period. PLUS, this system isn't SO bent towards just winning like the 1990-2002 F1 system was that you can get away with something like that for very long even if the sponsor was agreeable to you cherry picking the races...the consistent guys in the top-10 will overtake you.

With just 6 races to go, everyone from Logano on down is eliminated, and Harvick is facing elimination at California. Could we really see a part-timer win the Nationwide-F1 (GP2?) Championship?!?!?!?!?

Just as an aside, we are now up to 54 drivers who have at least one point, and I will post the full standings again at the end of the season.

If I'm not wrong, this weekend was the last Nationwide race Shrub will miss, so Kes did EXACTLY what he needed to do in this deal; Win the race while Shrub wasn't there. The lead is now cut to 21 points with 3 races to go.....

Now, how's this for a scenario: Kes wins the last 3 races, and Shrub finishes p2 in all 3. It's a 7 point swing from p1 to p2. That would have them TYING at 488 a piece, and Shrub would win on the tie-breaker, race wins (it would be 12-9)....We don't need no stinkin chase.

Oh, and for the record....I fail to find the Series Most Covered Driver ANYWHERE on this list!!!!

Congrats to Brad Keselowski, 2010 Nationwide Series Champion
Congrats to Kyle Busch, 2010 FIA Natwide Series Champion
