Storm thanks mate  but I am not surprised or even sad, and I was ready for this as posted many times in here.

That's how I felt after the first 2 England games. No matter how much you love your team you can not complain when they don't play well enough to go through.

The only time Italy played throughout the entire tournament was during the last 30 minutes of the Slovakia game. But this showed that this Italy team can't play offensive without being cut open at the back.

The 3rd Slovakia goal from the throw-in was possibly the worst defending I've seen since Brazil against France 2006. Not what you expect from Italy who are usually the best defensive team around.

Where has Nesta gone? He and Cannavaro was a solid partnership a few years ago.

What are you using to minimise the noise from the vuvuzelas?

They are part of this world cup and fortunately my wife can tolerate them better now.
The best crowds are the ones where you have a lot of followers that come from their countries and you can actually hear their songs and their particular cheering.

I believe not....I think they still count....otherwise you would have teams going all out collecting Yellow cards in the last game knowing that if they got through, all would be forgiven. I don't think you can do that....

True. Nothing against Uruguay, but I'm sure there'll be enough South Americans even without them, but Ghana is the last hope for Africa. It'd be great if there were teams from four continents in the semis. My choice would be Ghana, Japan, Netherlands and Mexico.

Of course England must be put out through dodgy decisions, it's an unwritten FIFA policy. Every English speaking nation must not be allowed to win anything.

odykas
27th June 2010, 17:09
Yes, the ref played a major role but in the 2nd half the Germans dominated the match.
English defence and keeper were awful. German keeper and defence were not much better and things could be different if Capello didn't insist on useless Rooney..

England should limit the zillions of foreign players that play in Premiership, me thinks.

Rooney is one of are best players but i agree something was wrong and to be brutally honest England are crap... Germany are good any way but were just simply dont have what it takes. Its not the manager...its not the ball...its the bloody players

Were never going to win the world cup again, Im not drowning in my sorrows but its a fact were never going to get the trophy again. 1966 was just a lucky year for us as are players had talent. Germany deserved to go thought and good luck to them

An average German team rips England apart!

The sad thing is that all of the German goals were so easy. It was the worst defensive performance I've ever seen (maybe apart from Italy the other night).

Glenn Johnson should be dropped as he is lazy and has never sprinted in his life.

Gareth Barry was dreadful as the holding midfielder. How did he get beaten to the ball by Ozil for the 4th goal? Carrick or a fit Hargreaves are much better in that role.

I've never seen Terry play so bad, he looked lost without Rio Ferdinand next to him. The Klose goal that came from the goal kick....first rule for a center back with a long ball played at you is DO NOT LET THE BALL BOUNCE! What the hell were they doing?

And Rooney?...........WTF?

When it comes to the goal that wasn't given - it changed the match. England would not have been so attacking if it was 2-2.

England missed Rio Ferdinand and Owen Hargreaves. Wes Brown would have been a more solid defender than Upson, especially when on the ball.

At least England don't get embarrassed by Argentina now.

Haven't posted here for a while.

Well, let's begin. France has been last in the group stage for the second big tournament in a row! They have certainly a lot to think about this massive low. As I felt, another European giant fell. Italy showed signs of attack at times, but those were too few and far between. Both finalists of the 2006 WC finishing last in the group stage - amazing!

England somehow sneaked through the group stage and even found some decent attack in the 1/8-finals, which had been missing before, but as life has constantly proven in football - it would be a surprise if England actually achieved something instead of their usual nothing. "Defence" in the game against Germany is not really that can be called a defence. England has their own ways of dropping out - sometimes with penalty shootouts, sometimes uncounted goals contribute (like in '98 against Argentina), but what is always sure - they do drop out.

Germany vs Argentina (provided the game ends as expected) - a repeat from 2006 quarterfinal. Germany has had a few iffy moments and also against England fell a bit asleep at one moment. In the future this needs to be avoided as Argentina would certainly be a tougher rival.

I liked the way Japan sneaked through the group stage. What an efficiency! Both Cameroon and Denmark seemed more active against them, but the Japanese nicely managed to capitalize on opportunities. Better than those teams, who bomb 100 shots to nowhere.

No, they got a decision which went for them against New Zealand which us yet another English speaking nation.

as Daniele de Rossi went down in the area after the slightest of shirt pulls from Ipswich defender Tommy Smith.
The Kiwis complained about the decision but Iaquinta stepped up to convert from the spot, much to Italian relief.

Had the result not been decided by a dodgy penalty, New Zeland would have gone through to the Round of 16... and then been smashed.

I don't see any reason why FIFA/referees would be biased against the English speakers.

Because IFAB (International Football Association Board) which determines the Laws of the Game, is made up of 8 members. Four being a representative of each of the home nations, and four members from FIFA.
http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/fifafacts/organisation/ip-100_04e_ifab_9481.pdf

I suspect that there is a deep rooted resentment to the fact that FIFA don't control an aspect of the game, much like their resentment towards UEFA for having a shiny, glossy European Champions League that's worth so much money.

Well people look at the players who are all "world class" in their respective teams, but then fail to impress at international level. But I agree the manager isn't the thing, it's a much more fundamental issue with English football.

Even a mediocre player may look like a world class when playing in a world class team but when these mediocres are put together in same team it becomes.... team England.

I knew Pino would take the bait :D :p :

It's a mixture of things really. It's not Capellos fault that Terry and Upson played like schoolboys or that Rooney had the first touch of a gorilla for the whole tournament. However, playing Gerrard wide left is like a F1 boss signing Fernando Alonso and having him operating the wheel gun, virtually any football fan in England can tell you that Gerrard out wide doesn't work. Dawson is by far a better option than Upson, Heskey playing up front on his own was never going to work, Wright-Phillips on the left doesn't work and Joe Cole's best position is not sat on the bench.

Capello made the same mistake that the last two managers did, looked at his best players and picked them regardless of whether it was the right choice for the team. What didn't help him was the abject performances that were put in but I still attribute some of that to having blokes playing out of position, it's stupid to have someone playing 40+ games a season in the centre of midfield and then deciding that they should be on the left wing.

4-4-2 was the biggest mistake Capello made.

None of the big clubs in England play 4-4-2 anymore.

4-4-1-1 might have worked with Rooney as a lone striker and Gerrard in behind.

My personal favourite formation is 4-6-0 that Manchester United have had so much success with recetly. Two of the 6 in midfield hold and the other 4 attack, but come back to defend as a team.

Brazil have a great balance at the moment. They are looking very strong. In the last World Cup they looked awful at the back but I can't see anyone beating them this time round.

Rooney was probably the reason that the coach didn't try that. Rooney was terrible and I can't see any reason why pinning any goalscoring hopes solely on him would not have been a disastrous failure.

Yes right like it was Capello's fault, how about you guys starts to blame your players, starting from Rooney, Terry, Lampard and Gerrard...none of them played a decent game.

Yes, but Capello didn't give opportunities to other players. He insisted on the same squad and failed. When a team does not perform, the coach has to make changes in order to improve performance. He didn't ....

Also, before the world cup he declared that it would be a failure if England didn't reach the final. In other words, he set the expectations too high and now people blame him.

Capello isn't Lippi, he took the best available players with him,
True. Lippi won the World Cup once while Capello didn't even get close ;)

the problem is that the quality isn't there, starting from the keepers...

Bottom line is that I love "futbol" and I love seeing it well played.

And yes, Peace dammit! and I recommend that you see "The Two Escobars" an ESPN documentary made by some friends of mine that do a fantastic job explaining the story of Andres Escobar and his autogol in the World Cup. It also does a great job in showing the social/economical/political situation in my birth country Colombia in the hight of the Pablo Escobar's reign. It was a very tough emotional ride but very well worth it.

The most important thing (after talent) in assembling teams of players that don't play together on a regular basis is chemistry!
That is something that most team coahes to a large degree have their hands tied. There is no way for him to understand how the team players will interact "when the big fish start running". Chemistry is something that is developed by the experience of playing together! I played on a Baseball team that was good but we won the whole shooting match to spite our coach.
Reverse psychology? Maybe but we did develop a chemistry that had guys playing their "A" game throughout the playoffs. We were underdogs in every game as we were the lowest seeded team, which is also a motivation!
The team that developed the best chemistry the fastest will be The World Cup winners. And just possibly not as good as team that got booted earlier because they had no chemistry!

Regarding England - they have had various coaches over the years, but the results are barely dissimilar. I suppose the problems are clearly deeper. They may change the coach again, but would it create a feeling that they are going to succeed next time around? Definitely not.

Anyway, I have to say I have been impressed with the South American squads so far. All have been in form and as one of them just had to drop out due to positioning in the play-off rounds, still four out of five have made it into the quarterfinals.

Perhaps UK football needs more international practice. And a tournament every 2 years doesn't do that.

Perhaps there should be a "5 Nations" i.e. England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Ireland; tournament every 2 years, i.e. years when there is no World Cup or European Championship to make sure that the national teams take part in an important competition at least once a year.

Not to mention it would give all the home nation teams the chance to play if they don't qualify for the other tournaments.

Common Netherlands! 2-1 against Brazil, fantastic for the world cup. Id love to see a Netherlands vs Spain final now, It would be great to see a final in the knowledge that whoever wins will win their first world cup.

I hope Ghana get through tonight as well, and thinking about it despite what I said above Germany Is the only country left in the world cup I wouldnt like to see win it.

What a shocker!
I knew the orange team was good but I thought it was not good enough to beat the samba players.

That second goal from the Dutch came from a corner kick that should not have been granted by the Brazilian defender - he could have easily kicked it to the side and avoided the deadly corner kick- many replays will accentuate many sleepless nights.

oh well, like my man JPM says: **** happens!!!

and the games go on.

Hoping for a fun one this afternoon (2pm NYC time)

Wow, we're in the semi's. 1st half was terrible, after 1-0 I thought Brazil would cruise to 2 or 3-0. 2nd half was totally different, compliments to coach Van Marwijk for that, it was amazing. In fairness, Brazil has 5 titles already, maybe it's time for a new winner, wether it's Netherlands or not.

Ghana as the next opponent would be nice for Africa, but I expect to see Uruguay pull through.

A penalty can not be saved it can only be poorly executed! ;)

Even with the player doing a handball, it didn't cross the plane. No goal.

The penalty kick was the right call, but it was up to player to make that kick. Instead, the kick was too heavy and bounced off the crossbar. Too bad.

And we all saw the rest... Congradulations, Uruguay... condolences, Ghana.

The agony and the ecstasy.

What a roller-coaster.

The bottom line is that someone has to win and the other goes home.

But what a devastating way to go home.

The ball that was stopped with the hand by the Uruguayan player was shot from offside position anyway. I wonder if the referee would have allowed or disallowed the goal if it wasn't for the hand play.

Argentina got destroyed. I can't see Germany losing the world cup from now, but they did look not as dominant during the second quarter of the match. That's about as far as the critisism can go for the German side.
