View Full Version : Sunoco still mad at Harvick and Shell

after watching for "Race Fans Only" briefly, the host was saying Harvicks livery was going to change starting in Las Vegas as Sunoco still has a problem with the livery.

he said the Shell logo may be off the hood and the Shell lettering was gonna be smaller on the side of the car.

I guess Sunoco was getting even more nervous if Harvick was gonna win Cali and having to see Shell all over the newpapers and websites again.

but this is getting out-of-hand as they had zero problem with the car until after he won the 500.

but it would be cool if the car went to the Yellow-Black colors with a big Pennzoil shield on the hood of the car like the #1 had.

IMHO the black is heads above the red.

I like the black better because its black, but I hope the car stays the way it is just to piss off Sunoco....

Maybe Nascar needs to spend less time gobbeling up all the exclusive sponsors and spend more time steering them to the teams that need them

Nice photoshop. The black is much better.

Either way, Shell is a frenchie company, that's probably why they're catching so much heat.. ;) :p

I have never liked Kevin's new car. I hope Sunoco gets it removed for good. Yellow and red just don't go!

Think about how ticked off Sunoco must be to have that big Shell logo sitting in Daytona USA for a whole year. :D

If I were RCR, I'd make a car that had a huge Shell logo on it for a major race...

The yellow and red looks better. Yellow and black would look too much like the 17.

And what would that accomplish other than getting the car sent home, (since it wouldn't pass tech)? Yes the car's appearance is part of tech inspection process. RC is in the racing business. It's not good business to go out of you way to p!$$ off the racing organization he depends on.

(The Red & Yellow car looks like it's missing a golden arch logo.)

I stand corrected, thanks.

How on earth can Nascar have the right to dictate to teams what sponsors they have?

This is happening with Shell / Sunoco, and Cingular/Allteletc and Nextel.

It's restraint of trade for Nascar to stop legitimate sponsors coming in - why isn't anybody challenging it legally?

Mark Martin, Matt Kenseth & Jeff Burton raced this car for Roush Racing in the 2004 Busch Series.
It looks pretty good IMO.

As to looking like the 17, I think not so much ...

NASCAR is into control & making big money. :s
The courts seem to be unable to control NASCAR because it is a privately owned company. :s

(Hey milly, have you ever used the handle "millybone" ?) :D

I read something somewhere else.

if Harvick wins with the Reeses car, do you think M&M's is going to go crying to Nascar as well since the are the official candy of Nascar :p :

RaceFanStan
3rd March 2007, 21:23
Maybe so, because Reese's is owned by Hershey's, M&Ms is owned by Mars ... :s

I think the 29 car would look exceptionally good if it was all black with the Pennzoil logos. :D

Me too. That was one fine paint scheme.

I'll play the devil's advocate on this one. Sunoco signed a multi-year deal with NASCAR for exclusive rights to be the Official Fuel of NASCAR and as part of that deal they have a clause that says no other fuel supplier can enter the sport (Texaco is grandfathered in). RCR comes and wants to use Shell/Penzoil as their sponsor. NASCAR says okay as long as you don't use the fuel supplier as the primary sponsor but instead use Penzoil. Penzoil has been there before so NASCAR may have thought there would be no problem. The 29 shows up at Daytona with a big Shell shell on their hood. What do you think of when you see that? Penzoil? I think not, you think of Shell fuels. Sunoco is providing the teams with free fuel at the track for their exclusivity and they aren't happy that the clause has been bent like it is.

but Nascar approved the car, helmet, and suit. Sunoco got mad because Harvick won and Shell got the golory.

if Mark won the 500, there would be zero debate right now

It may be that by winning, the #29 came to the attention of the Sunoco exec who ok'd the deal, but doesn't otherwise follow Nascar. Then started asking questions like "Why are we paying all this money to be Nascar's fuel, and Shell's on the front page of Monday's paper?"

BobbyC

No.

Shell bought Pennzoil in 2002, and Shell decided it was time to show the full colours of Shell as part of a massive branding package. They had no problems when Shell Rotella T was marketed on some Craftsman Trucks the past few years, complete with the Shell logo.

The "Shell Pennzoil" should not be a problem; on the back of a bottle of Pennzoil, the label says Shell on it.

What is Sunoco's beef when Shell is wanting to push Shell's Pennzoil brand? They aren't pushing V-Power fuel.

That pretty much sums it up in a nut shell. LOL
They just f'd up and didn't realize it till it was too late. No biggie IMO, but to big business it is.

Was that when 76 was still supplying fuel?

Isn't it great to know that oil companies can find such trivial items to spend their money on?

From my standpoint, Red/yellow stands out better than the black/yellow. As someone has already pointed out, the black/yellow combo is being used by several teams. I'm sure Shell/Pennzoil will have some say.

In the busch race he won , the arogant hardarse' wore shell instead of the sponsor he had on the car! Auto Zone would have liked to see there logo & design on the fire suit when he went to victory lane instead of the shell one?

It was blatant sponsor kidnapping by shell, & maybe Sonoco had a very small logo on his fire suit that no one could see on the yellow background!

I wreckon that Shell has got more coverage because of all this action by Sunoco. If Sunoco had stayed quiet there wouldn't be articles in Aussie magazines with pictures of Harvick in his Shell gear.

Also people have to realise that Shell does sell Lubricants. I know because that's my job.
