I just noticed that we have only 21 cars left in IRC standings and 28 in total
But there are (and some Group B too!) quite a lot in RALLY DEL CORALLO, which features also Jari Latvala (J-M's father!)... ;) ;)

Wilks fractures vertebrae in Sardinia crash

[B]Guy Wilks has suffered two fractured vertebrae in his lower back, his &#352]

Wilks was flown by helicopter to hospital in Oristano complaining of pains in his lower back after the high-speed accident in his Fabia Super 2000. Following X-rays it was discovered that the 29-year-old had fractured his first and second lumbar vertebra.

It is not clear how long he will take to recover but he is set to remain in hospital overnight. It is then hoped he will be able to return to his native United Kingdom on Monday as scheduled.

He said: “We had a good road position so we were pushing hard. We got to an almost flat-left corner seven kilometres into the stage when an error with our pacenotes caused us to leave the road at high speed and that was pretty much it.

“I’m annoyed to be in a hospital bed instead of being on the stages. Obviously it’s massively frustrating to be injured and not out there competing because I’ve missed a massive opportunity and I know that. I’m just really disappointed for the team and for Škoda UK.”

Co-driver Phil Pugh was uninjured in the crash. The British duo’s retirement marks the first time this season that they have failed to score points in the IRC. They had been among the favourites to win the gravel event.

Car of Wilks doesn't look that damaged. According to Skoda UK his car went straight from a corner, was catapulted in the air and landed on a big rock by sumpguard. They also said on radio that the impact was so strong that it destroyed onboard camera system.

Mirek

pettersolberg29
6th June 2010, 11:53
Another good stage time for Andreas - it at least shows signs of potential. I would expect at least a couple of podiums for him this year - possibly Cyprus and Azores?

bluuford
6th June 2010, 12:16
Koitla just said that the car is almost ok (just a little bodywork damage) back end slide a little wide, got stuck somewhere and car rolled down from the road. As the car was -3 meters from the road, they could not get it back to the road anymore.

noel157
6th June 2010, 12:20
Think RR said Dettori got the car back on it's wheels and got going again after 6 mins. At least not all the rolls were terminal.

Agree with the above, was looking like a fantasic fight to the finnish, disappointing. Ypres next.

Very interesting interview with Andreas on WRR. The questioner asked about the possibility of a Norwegian WRC team with Petter, and Andreas replied, "It would be a solution, it would be good for the Norwegian fans etc".

What a race...so much happening....First, I must congratulate to Juha, he impressed me with his performance, I expected convincing victory of Paolo Andreuccci&Anna Andreussi....Anyway, even second place is a fine result and we can yust imagine, what could be, if Paolo would have the same possibility as Hanninen&Wilks&Meeke to drive in the IRC....
Meeke-for me personaly the biggest fool of this race, he had second place in his hands, valuable 8 points in his pocket, and now...luckily he is not inyured...
Last, but not the least it showed again, that even Lancer N4 with bigger restrictor and a top driver can not match the same pace as S2000-this is a clear message to all those, who hope, that N4 can be as fast as S2000 on gravel...stop dreaming and bury your hopes.
See you in Belgium, Loix is waiting...

The Finnish commentators for Eurosport (Jakke Honklanen and Jussi Välimäki) said that, in their opinion Kris has too much information in his pace notes. The co-driver is quite busy reading the pace notes.

BTW, there was also another victory for a Finnish driver. Teemu Arminen secured the win of the gravel rally trophy.

I think Meeke and Nagle's codriving system generally seems to work quite well for them, and it is entertaining to listen to too!

I don't think today's accident can be attributed to that. More so that they were pushing very hard to keep in touch with the Skoda, which seems to be a little bit ahead on anything other than very smooth gravel now.

Very solid drive by Hanninen, but stars of the rally for me are Andreucci and Kopecky...

Skoda's driver lineup is coming together very nicely now - they started off with a tarmac specialist and a gravel specialist but each are now becoming better on their weaker surface and are turning into 2 very good all-rounders.

I really enjoyed this rally up until the end - Meeke and Hanninen battle nearly to the end and then Andreucci and Kopecky.

If only Ogier, Wilks and Mikkelssen hadn't had early problem it could have been epic!

It seems that Skoda is quite a lot ahead with their car. Seems that Kris has to take enormous risks to keep up with them or stay ahead of them. Meeke ha a some moments before and final roll. While Hanninen looked very comfortable even first on the road. Only one small mistake on the first stage.

He can still win the title because he is the only one who can win all remaining events. But frankly he can't achieve that alone. He needs someone to cover his back and some improvements on the car which allows him to push a little bit less or at least not during whole events.

This year he reminds me Basso from last two years. Pushing like hell, sometimes winning but only at the price of too much risk.

Has anyone got any video footage of Andreas Mikkelsen in Sardinia? His crash and low road position meant he wasn't on Eurosport.

Mikkelsen was on Eurosport on Sunday. They even had a short interview with him at the finish of one stage.

Really? I saw the interview bit but I didn't see any actual 'action' on the stage. Maybe I missed it somehow?

Those are great vids, especially the first one.

It seems amateur cameramen often pick better spots by the roadside than the professionals doing the shooting! (and that goes for both IRC and WRC)

Normally there is only handfull pro crews on one stage where as there can be tens maybe hundreds of amateurs along the stage. Surely one of them have a bigger chance to be in the right place at the right time.

No, I think there is more to it than that. The first video Mirek linked to is I presume from one guy in several different places and they are pretty much all good places!

I have seen this many, many times over recent years in lots of different rallies where the supposedly amateur footage makes an event look a hell of a lot more exciting than the professional stuff!

In WRC maybe they are too focussed on finding good spots to film their advertising banners rather than the cars.

I must agree with RS. I know perfectly stages of Barum rally and I find Czech TV and Eurosport footage rather boring every year (Eurosport had better places in fact). There are much better places to go and while the stages are mostly same every year it's not difficult to find THE place as almost all are well known. The biggest problem is that they choose places which can be left while stage is running.

That last picture is epitome of being a rally fan. A long day behind, feeling perhaps a bit tired but still it was the best day ever. PR wise Skoda should buy that picture for a lot of money and use it for promotion. Very nice.

BTW - are those people the same group as the ones in these (http://www.src.czechrallyeweb.net/images/barum2009/barum2009_50.jpg) pictures (http://www.src.czechrallyeweb.net/images/barum2009/barum2009_63.jpg) from last year's Barum.

To Hartusvuori:
Yes, this picture very accurately captures the whole atmosphere of the rally, it's just the way you write! And it is those moments for which I rally enjoy!

It's the same group of fans, as the picture of the Barum Rally, the same people you see in the pictures of Sanremo, Ypres and Monte Carlo. Now we are going to support "our" team was in Belgium. Š.U.G. - Škoda Ultras Gang :)
