So on to round 2 then folks!

The entry lists for Brazil and Argentina look like they will be better than expected and better than IRCs previous attempts at going outside Europe (China, Japan, Safari)

So for Brazil so far we have confirmed:

Meeke (207)
Kopecky (Fabia)
Hanninen (Fabia)
Wilks (Fabia)
Magalhaes (207)

Any more?

Mirek
25th January 2010, 12:16
Oliveira (207) is confirmed also, Mikkelsen (Fiesta?) or Villagra (Fiesta) are possible. Don't know about Al Attiyah (Fiesta), if he starts in Brazil or later in Argentina only...

Mikkelsen will definately be there. He hasn't decided between Fiesta and Fabia yet though. He's deciding after Sweden.

New superspecial stage for Curitiba

Competitors on Rally Internacional de Curitiba are set for a spectacular finish to the Intercontinental Rally Challenge event when the series resumes in Brazil next month.

A new 3.38-kilometre superspecial stage is being built close to the Autodromo Internacional de Curitiba where the gravel rally will be based from 4-6 March. It will mark the 15th and final stage of the event, round two of the IRC.

Crews will tackle the stage in pairs and organisers hope that up to 15,000 spectators will turn up to watch.
Event promoter Marcos Marcola said: "There will be a bridge with a crossing point so we can have two cars side by side. The stage is close to the city of Curitiba and close to the service park so we hope it will make it easy for the fans to go and see. Everybody likes this kind of show and I think it will be very exciting for the rally and for the drivers."

it takes approximately 15 days (+ few days for possible delays) for ship to reach from Netherlands to Curtiba region. One day for loading and one for unloading one day for customs. So, the ship should leave in next few days if it is not left already or if it is not superfast ferry or if it is not leaving from Portugal.

Pretty weak.....

Some more strong entries would be nice but I think that what is listed is all we can hope for.

Nevertheless it should be a good rally. Last year it was a nice event and I think all 5 of the European S2000 boys could fight for the win here.

It's not large but I'm still very much looking forward to the rally. I'm not too sure of what to expect from Oliveira, but I expect all of the other 5 S2000 drivers to be able to win stages.

Should be a good watch too, the stages in Brazil are nice.

Couple of questions:

- What is the time difference from Curitiba to central Europe?

- "Prologue stage" Super Prime Pinhais (3.38kms), looks like a superspecial stage that is not part of the main rally, but will run as the final stage as well. On Thursday is this stage a shakedown and/or being used to decide running order like they did on Monte?

It'll be used to decide running order, fastest will start 10th, same as RMC.
SD? Would imagine so.

That's good. It will give a little show to the spectators on Thursday night and it means that the stage times on Friday should not be affected too much for the leading crews, giving us a nice clear picture compared to the usual nonsense we have to put up with on gravel rallies!

Yes. Partly because of the wet surface the running order is not such an issue (and if it was dry at least they tried something to fix the issue in Brazil)

But not fast enough to win also at home. Was close last year in Madeira...

But there are some superfast tarmac drivers in IRC.

Most drivers are quicker on their home events until they have some international experience.

Bruno is doing the right thing to be driving in IRC to develop himself as a driver insead of staying at home to win more titles. Maybe with the practice of being up against these guys every event he will have a bit extra for Madeira this year?

PLuto

He don´t have competitive pace, i agread. And in Ypres and Barum the decalage will be even greater.

I thought he had things pretty easy at home. From what I have seen he is much much better than Sousa for example.

Luis Pacheco
5th March 2010, 16:07
We cannot make comparisons between Sousa and Magalhães. The first is still young, makes many mistakes, and is not a constant presence in the portuguese championship.

Like I said the portuguese drivers don´t have much competitive pace. Look what happen to Armindo. Only at the third year he won the championship whit only a rally win so far.

But Sousa has been on the international scene for a few years now. Last year he did a couple of events in IRC (ok, it was in a Punto) and he was a looonnggg way off the pace.

I'm not arguing, because I am sure you know a lot more about the Portuguese rally scene than I do, but I am interested to hear your opinions :)

5th March 2010, 16:33
Many portuguese fans placed high hopes in Magalhães. Much in the style of what happened with Armindo Araujo at the start in the PWRC. Araújo won several times the portuguese championship and by wide margin over the other competitors. He even won with 2WD cars against 4x4 cars. He was nicknamed alien and many predict international wins easy like in Portugal. But the reality was very different. I´m not telling that Magalhães or Armindo are bad drivers. Only the lack of pace is very evident in Magalhães like it was with Armindo three years ago. Sousa is a fast driver but makes many mistakes. Let´s give time to the boy...

I don't agree. The stages and scenery are really nice and quite unique.

The biggest problem is that it is logistically difficult for the European privateer crews with maybe only one car, and that the local scene is not so strong - that is what will make the difference in Argentina.

Hey guys,
I read some complains about the event and how dull it was.
That's really not true.
Curitiba has a great tradition in brazilian rally.
This rally dates back to the 80's.
It used to be the best rally in south america. The original format was 3 day event, starting with some night stages in the sea shore, followed by an 20km up hill stage in very slippery a cobblestone road, climbing almost 3.000 feet with lots of hairpins.
Sadly, environmental state agency banned the rally 'cause it COULD harm the animals mating habits (what a joke, right?).
Well, after this the organizers shortened the event for two, only around Curitiba country side.
Even though, rally in Curitiba still hot. The host the WV factory team for years with a Ibiza Kit Car and know they are back with A6 cars. Besides, we have several private teams, two of them the biggest in the country with excellent drivers, like Rafael Tulio and Maurício Neves (drove a Touareg las Dakar).
The only factory team is not here in Curitiba is GM.
As for the event itself, I heard from Meeke mouth, right after the first day in 2009, that this was the best rally he even ran. I asked if it was like Finland. He said it was like Finland if ten times more grip.
The stages are short, but they are fast and challenging, really. You can see by the average speed of the S2000.
If we don't have a huge grid with 4x4 it's an economic problem with tha country, and not the lack of enthusiasm or skill of the drivers ands teams.
Last year, our event was considered the best of the season, perfect organization. Right, we have some flaws this year, but we try the best and we will try to don't make the same mistakes next year.
We hope the IRC is coming for good.
I'd like to invite you guys to plan a vacation to match our event and see a great race and a great city.
As the problems with the rocks, yes, we have some problems with one or two guys who have their weekend cottage and think they don't need to wait an hour to go out, just because some silly guys are racing in their front yard. Sadly, but some guys don't like cars ! They probably had dolls when they were kids.
Try to check some footage on youtube, you will find nice pieces. Try "Tulio Valandro on board" "Maurício Neves", etc.

Hello Alceu,

I don't think the complaints here were related to the event itself. In my opinion the road & scenery are very nice.

I think it was only preceived as boring because there weren't too many battles at the front, due to Hanninen's puncture and not very many S2000 cars visiting from Europe.

I think Curitiba deserves it's place in IRC and sharing a boat with the WTCC crews is a good idea to keep costs down.

I think the biggest failure was Eurosport who was not able to show us this great event properly. Always when they try to put WTCC and IRC on the same weekend on the same country it is bad for IRC (I have noticed). Recenlty I have been little bit dissapointed in Eurosport coverage in general. they try to show too many things and at the end everything is like semi nice :-(
