Top Ten Drivers

Guy Wilks inclusion in this year's IRC got me thinking about how many drivers in that championship would make my top ten drivers competing in major championships this year? He's considered one of the favourites for the IRC title this year, but would be outside my top ten world drivers. Here's my list to kick things off.

5. Sordo
6. Meeke
7. Ogier
8. Brynildsen
9. Kopecky

Wilks isn't even near top 10 in my view. Here's mine:

1) Loeb - supreme
2) Mikko - only one close
3) Sordo - really coming on now
4) Petter - still got it and ex-WDC
5) Ogier - really impressing me
6) Latvala - inconsistent but rapid
7) Meeke - quality on all surfaces
8) PG Andersson - good, solid driver
9) Kopecky - unlucky in his career
10) Mikkelsen - supreme talent for young age

Of course there are people like Atkinson, Galli and Gronholm that would be in there if they had solid drives in place. Also Gardemeister, Henning and maybe, just maybe Kimi are closing in.

I saw it. Stupid ranking in my opinion. You can't compare WRC, F1, NASCAR and Touring Cars. NASCAR even didn't race in rain or fog. In F1, they don't race that much in heavy rain as there is a Safety Car than or the race is stopped (Malaysia 2009)... Button on one with a far superiour car and Trulli, who has not done something spectacular in his career, is very high in the standings. Loeb should be on number 1 and Hamilton, Vettel, Alonso and Räikkönen above Button.

Difficult to list these guys without some kind of context. I tried to imagine that they were all in equal machinery in the WRC and that if they were all running the same rounds maybe this is how the championship would come out. Still very difficult to compare IRC to WRC guys. Maybe Mikko going over there next week will answer a few questions - although Monte is not a great indicator of pace.

1. Loeb - Not entirely human
2. Hirvonen - Mature, consistent, very fast - top 2 in a league of their own
3. P.Solberg - Don't think he's past it yet
4. Sordo - Improving (Could he win the IRC in a 207? I think so).
5. Latvala - Wanted to put him lower but I can't - his job depends on him learning
6. Atkinson - Hypothetically if he came back in a top car/without ring rust
7. Meeke - Massive year last year - incredible attitude + pace - his stock is high right now
8. Ogier - Not a great debut season but has shown flashes of real potential
9. Galli - Still capable of getting amongst the podium action on his day
10. Duval - Famous for his mistakes but nowhere near as bad as people make out
