I am thinking with Cotman down there or someone from his company there, the course will be built and look like something we can use, but this is all too quick and fly by night looking in its lead up. Announcing the race in late fall and running in March is pushing things. You couldn't do it that fast in an American or Canadian city.....

That was a race thrown together by idiots who didn't know what they were doing, and back then, no one knew enough to know they didn't know what they were doing. IN today's world, with planning procedures wouldn't allow for a quick race.

Not to mention the marketing. You need almost a year to sell the idea of the race and get people buying tickets. Maybe in Brazil they love racing so much it is a slam dunk, but to me, you need a year's lead time before the first race. In North America you definately do.

The major snafu with Hamilton was the barriers, then the cure for them. Lots of others, but that was the show stopper. I'm wondering about Brazil. A history repeats deal?

I hope not. I was only 13 when they had that Hamilton race. Drifter was THERE so I will defer to him on how badly messed up it was, but people I know who were there said the barriers were the killer. People who didn't know squat about racing put that deal together, it would never happen anywhere.

I think Sao Paulo may work because of the Brazilians natural enthusiam for the sport making it happen, and the fact red tape is often made to go away in places like Brazil with a little .....help. All I am going to say...lol

I don't think ticket sales or track layout is going to be the problem. According to a friend of mine from Brazil, this event is going to get a ton of walk-up ticket sales, and he says they "like Indy racing there". The track design is not particularly complex, but it does have some excellent passing zones. On the other hand... they sure as hell better be looking at the quality of the pavement and the safety on the straights because this is one raggedy looking street circuit. It's hard to tell because that video is not edited in a straightforward way, but with only 9 weeks to go, they have a lot of work to do if this is how it looks now. I know of some tracks here in the US that the IRL has refused to race at that were in much better condition than this one currently is. A lot, lot of work.

That's about all WE have I suppose. But the FIA regulations for setting up an international street circuit are very strict.


For non-permanent circuits, not later than 120 days before the
event concerned, a dossier in conformity with Supplement 1 and
the construction timetable should be submitted to the FIA for
approval. The date and time of the final inspection will be fixed for
each case individually by the FIA inspector after a preliminary site
inspection which should take place not later than 60 days before
the event, at which time all work relating to the track surface, with
the possible exception of minor modifi cations or repairs, must be
completed to the FIA’s satisfaction.

So unless this race has nothing to do with the FIA, which would surprise me, everything is organised and well on schedule.

Having Tony Cotman on board might have a couple strings he can pull with the FIA since he in involved with them.

The thing is that he found the full half hour video, as well as paving progress on the track. It was also very refreshing to see that a Brazilian news agency spent the money to put together a 30 minutes show on the race.

It is a big deal. South America doesn't get much attention in world sport outside of the Brazilian GP and "futbal". They are starved to bring events down, so for them, the Sao Paulo Indy is a big deal. Also, Sao Paulo despite its size doesn't get the world notice the way Rio does. Rio had the Pan Am games, and is now getting the Olympics. Sao Paulo wants success in getting events, and not only do they have f1, but now Indy Car. I am not surprised the media jumped on board at all.
