Charles, If you watch the show in the US called "Mythbusters" I believe they cover this. Not as often as TV drama's and action movies would have you believe.

Most modern cars have lots of explosives in them - air-bags & belt tensioners - and in a big enough impact they will explode but very rarely will a car even catch fire let alone explode in a crash unless it's on film. Hollywood is a bit like tabloid journalism - "Never let the facts get in the way of a good story".

All cars explode in every crash, around here the fireballs are enough that you don't need street lighting.

Nah. The Chevy side mounted gas tanks killed way more people than the Pinto. ;)
