Ok, time to start the Monte thread! It's only 6 weeks or so away and I can't wait, should be a cracking entry (+maybe debut of Fiesta) plus we have live tv from almost all stages.

Post your news and rumours here :)

I am not so sure about McRae in MC. He is doing Dakar which is ending on 17th of January (in Europe it is already early morning of 18th of Januray)+ very long flight. Recce in MC starts in 16th of Januray and ends on 18th, so no-one who decides to do Dakar cannot reach to MC in time.

I think the Monte Fiesta situation is difficult for M-Sport. Because on the one hand they want to put their best driver (Mikko) in the car to be the most competitive and get the most data. It would be great if they entered Mikko.

BUT. By entering their number one driver they are basically endorsing the IRC series by saying this is too good to miss. And that obviously detracts from the value of the WRC. This is why I think they will try to enter someone who is not linked directly with the full works WRC outfit.

Should be interesting if it happens. A driver of Hirvonen's calibre should negate any excuses about first event, new car etc. Imagine if the car was reliable and he was beaten into 3rd or 4th place?
Certainly would bring plenty of sales publicity if he entered.

Mikko was quoted as saying - " "The project seems to be progressing well", said World Championship 2009 runner up. "The decision could be taken during the tests to be carried out in France. If the tests are conclusive, Malcolm Wilson our team manager, will decide on our participation."

I would like to see Mikko in the car for Monte, but he will be expected to win. If he doesn't it won't reflect well on the car, and if he does then people will just say that is what was expected. It might be better to put someone experienced in S2000 machinery and IRC in the car, Vouilloz maybe if he is not contracted elsewhere.

Good point Simmi! I guess ISC people would be horrified with it... :p

On the other hand the Fiesta is a major investment of Msport, so it's of their interest to put their best driver behind the well.

A team with Hirvonen and a S2000 specialist, Vouilloz like RS has suggested, would be a very strong entry.

Sorry, don't follow your logic. Entering the MC doesn't endorse the IRC, it re-enforces the fact that the MC should never have been left out of the WRC as it is with NORF and GB a part of the essential tests of rallying. The Monte is still the event that Guiseppe Publico thinks of when top class rallying is being mentioned.

The Monte is still the event that Guiseppe Publico thinks of when top class rallying is being mentioned.

But it is run as part of the IRC championship. There's no escaping it. You have the IRC series website plastered across the top of your windscreen. You appear in the IRC broadcasts. You adhere to their rules and regulations.

Your Guiseppe Publico are going to see Ford and it's works driver in the IRC and think this is now the premium rally series. And if not that they will still be intrigued. Either way how can that not fail to be a positive for the IRC? These are rival championships.

To sell cars and as a commericial exercise Ford has to sell the WRC as being the pinnacle. The greatest test. Otherwise what is the point?

We all know the Monte should be in the WRC calendar. It is the crown jewel so I know what you're saying. But I personally feel Ford are in a difficult PR position and I don't think it is difficult to grasp that logic.

Mirek

I think that good Fiesta sales are more important for M-Sport. It's just bussines. In this time there's hardly some market for new WRC cars as they are at the end of their first league career.

In the same time IRC is both reasonable market and very good promotion for S2000 car. It would be stupid to pretend it doesn't exist and leave it to Peugeot, Skoda and others making profit out of it.

Yeah okay, but they also have "their own" events like Ypres, Barum, Acores, Madeira. WRC had too much events with the same character. Mexiko, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Jordan.

Why would you want that? The World Rally Championship should always be the premier championship, both from a logical and historical point of view.

While I admire what IRC has done especially since last year, I hope people realize it's not healthy for the sport to have two series competing over eachother. The WRC/ISC should learn from IRC what can be done - regarding coverage (and how to improve it even further), the events structure (like monte 2010) and the variety of rallies (let alone cherish classic events) - in order to come out stronger in the future. I hope WRC ultimately prevails, but I'm not sure what to make of IRC at that point.

Ask Monte organisers, they don't wanna come back to WRC

I think the idea is that ISC/WRC will cave in to all of their demands. Let them run the rally they want. Without the limitations of cloverleaf rallying I wouldn't have thought it would matter to the ACM who has the rally?

I think they have made the WRC people realise that their methods are not working. I think in the future they will come together again and we will get a great rally run under the WRC banner.

Hopefully for 2011 to kick off the new era in style.

Generaly this year only two stages of last leg are close to Nice - Col de Turini and Lucéram.

Malcolm Wilson is quoted in Autosport as saying Mikko "makes sense" for the drive on the Monte.

I hadn't thought about it from this point of view but he also said that if the Monte is back in the WRC calendar in 2011 it makes sense for Mikko to see the stages. He obviously thinks it could return for the new WRC era.

So double good news I'd say!

I wouldnt be surprised to see Loeb or Sordo or at least Ogier entered Monte as well. Its one of those events that's almost stand alone. WRC needs Monte more than Monte needs WRC, I still predict an amalgamated WRC / IRC in 2011, or at least the "jewel events" that slipped from WRC to IRC (MC & SR) to come back.

Realy? I think that Ogier won last year. Even though a bit lucky but that's how it goes there. Sarrazin won six stages of fourteen and was in fight for victory just from first meter and was faster than Meeke.

Also we know PSA is a family and everything - but how much do they really want to put Loeb in a Peugeot on the rally stages? In a Le Mans car is one thing but on the rally side maybe Citroen want to retain some kind of brand exclusivity on the best rally driver in the world. But that's just me thinking out loud.

RS

Actually, Mirek was right. I have looked back at the times and Sarrazin was more impressive than I remembered (it's just he went off the road and lost a lot of time so was out of the battle for the lead)

But I still expect Meeke to be right up there, he was pretty quick last year, even on his debut.

As far as I recall Citroen did consider putting Loeb in a 207 in this year's RMC but the marketing people said No Way as they thought it would confuse the general public. I guess on Main Street Europe Joe and Jane Public have no idea that Citroen and Peugeot are essentially the one company.

No need to be rude, we all have an opinion :)

I just feel that he's a bit overrated. Still a great driver, but not as good technically as the ones I mentioned. It's like Latvala - he looks bad because he always crashes but there is little doubt he's as good a driver as Mikko in terms of style and speed.

Are you talking "fastest" or "best"?

Since Meeke did take the title quite covincingly last year against two of those mentioned, and i don't believe the Peugeot is significantly better than the Skoda if at all.

Re: Monte, don't forget both Kopecky & Hanninen were pretty quick last year, in fact Hanninen was on course to win with quite a big margin last year until his accident, and that was on the Fabia's debut.

IMO, one of the most interesting things on Monte this year will be to see how Ogier has progressed after a year's more experience in WRC. He drove very consistent last year on Monte, but was never very fast. Maybe this year he can do both.

I fully expect Mikko to say before (or during) the rally that "the most important thing is to finish, we are only pushing 95%" e.t.c. That way, if he wins he can say 'look how great me and the Fiesta are' and if he doesn't they have pre-empted that with an excuse :D

Can't wait, should be a great battle!

That's a good point. I suppose technically I meant fastest or potentially the best if everything is working 100%. What I was sort of trying to say is if everyone was driving 100%, with no incidents or car problems then there are drivers better than Meeke.

No need to do the donkey work in public. Especially not on the Monte.

Hi,
in a newsletter i've jest received he sais that he's now sure to start at Montecarlo but he wanted to do a test with snow and ice in view of a possible participation.
I don't understand very well this newsletter because I was talking with him on monday during tests and he said as he was sure to do that race...

The rest of the year he will compete in ERC

Interesting article on Rallyzone.cz says that Skoda tested for two weeks altogether and were working a lot on tyres and also the engine mapping. Guy Wilks drove for 1/2 day, but test was curtailed when Hanninen crashed on snow and damaged the rollcage.

So Juho has had 2 offs in 2 tests, one in the dry and one on snow. Better to get the bad luck out of the way before the season starts....... :)

At least he is finding the limits of the car... But even the minor off would have been enough to lose him the rally I think.

This is what I like about IRC: who will win this rally? Nobody really knows, okay it's Monte, but in the last years in WRC it was quite obious who would win Monte, except for the one off he had and still he was able to finish 2nd in superrally!
So who will it be?
- vice-world champion and for me top favorite Miko Hirvonen?
- other top favorites: Meeke, Haninen (depends on weather), Kopecky
- underdougs: the whole Pug team except for Meeke I guess

So what is your guess, who's favorite and who's underdog?

I need to plan some days of just to watch eurosport coverage, maybe even in HD this year :D

I think it will all depend on conditions, if it is very snowy and icy then I guess Hirvonen and Hanninen will run at the front, if there is a lot of dry asphalt I don't think Mikko will find it so easy ;)

It's going to be a fascinating rally whichever way you look at it!

Everything will be about conditions. Of course top favourites should be Hirvonen, Meeke, Hanninen, Kopecky, but dont forget also to Vouilloz, Wilks, Sarrazin, Ogier, maybe Gardemeister or Neuville... Or somebody else...
